I think Walt may have run into some obstacles had he lived another decade that he couldn't have foreseen. First, he would have lost the guidance of Roy Disney who died in 1971 and had wanted to retire for some time even before Walt's death. Second, he didn't live long enough to see America lose its zeal for futuristic concepts rooted in the goodness of what big business could to, which really faded as the 70s dawned. Plus, he would have had to face the pressures caused by events he had no control over like the Energy Crisis etc. which put a crimp on planned projects for Disney World's first phase. I don't think realistically EPCOT the city could have happened. But we might have seen some more elaborate touches in what came to pass than we did see (like perhaps monorail or Peoplemover service directly to the Lake Buena Vista resort area of the park which has never existed). And had Walt lived I think we would have seen Marc Davis's "Western River Expedition" became a reality at Florida because he likely would have stuck to his guns and not panicked over customer complaint about the absence of "Pirates of the Caribbean" in Florida that initially existed.

One of the biggest regrets of my life was when Walt Disney died in 1966, at age 65. I was privileged to have been to Disneyland the summer it opened in 1955. I was five years old. It was the most wondrous, magical place in the world. And when he died in 1966, it was a shattering event. So many people live a squandered, non-productive life, accomplishing little, or nothing, and die in their 90s, and here Walt died at 65. What amazing things could he have done with 25 more years of his life, his imagination...the entire world lost something in his passing.

I was 5 when Mr. Disney passed away. I remember it like yesterday still. Being from Florida we just loved him. I remember my mom sitting me down and telling me he passed away. I remember crying and asking my mom “does that mean Disney World won’t open?” It was a very sad day. Missed him so much on Sunday nights.

This makes me sad, I wonder how much more of an impact Walt would of made with 25 years added to his lifespan. I was not alive during Disneyland’s early days so I feel like I missed out. How much more different was the experience of being in the park compared to now?

As someone who's studied urban design (masters) I think this actually could have worked. Like Walt said, this is all just schematic, things would have changed and been compromised based on costs and feasibility, but the core philosophy of everything he talks about is perfectly in alignment with what modern urbanists are trying to achieve. None of this is futurist; if anything it's pragmatism to a fault, but it's easier to take something practial and make it beautiful over time than vice versa. Too bad it was all abandoned.

The crazy thing is this probably could have worked tremendously well even before the advanced tech we have today. Think about how this would work today, Disney is big on solar energy. Add solar power to this model to power the transportation and homes and you would have the very first self-reliant city in the US. It could theoretically be completely off the grid.

This video is golden. All the times I watched snippets of this video, just the first part when Walt would introduce his plan, but this is the first time I actually watched his whole plan for EPCOT. Wow, all I can say is that doing this today, would still make it seem futuristic. Bless his soul for bringing us all of Disney. I was at the October 1st, 2021 celebration at MK. Walt would have wanted more for all of us that day. It felt flat and dull. Nonetheless, I am glad that k can truly say I was there in person to honor his memory. RIP, Walt.

Could you also imagine, in present day, this place has now become defunct. Abandoned. And it's sitting completely un-used, rotting away stuck in time from the 60s. Like, imagine the size and scale of the land this would use. it would be so interesting to watch explored in modern day, but seeing everything still stuck in time in there. Monorail, the underground highway tunnels, the hotel/convention tower etc. It would be such a time capsule.

I think if Walt had lived through the 70s and been forced to confront the matters of (1) brother Roy's death and (2) The Energy Crisis and the loss of enthusiasm for futuristic technology, he would have had to cut back on the original vision for EPCOT the city. He would have also had to keep an eye on the health of the studio in the 70s which hit a creative low that first decade after his death as well, and that would have undoubtedly impacted decision on EPCOT too.

This film needs to be watched to understand better why the current controversy that has resulted in the revoking of the Reedy Creek Improvement District goes beyond the parents rights bill. RCID's creation was rooted in the promise of this film, that Disney wanted to build EPCOT the City. Without all those privileges of RCID, EPCOT the City would be impossible to build. But as we know, EPCOT the City never happened, and essentially Disney was given special privileges without delivering on the thing that made it possible for those privileges to be granted. This is why people were arguing for the abolition of RCID long before this current controversy emerged, and it is for the best that in a world where there will never be a Progress City as Walt envisioned, the Disney corporation now be forced to play by the same rules its competitors in the Orlando market are forced to play by.
