This is an excerpt from the "Crimson Classics" TV series. The Big 8 champion, #3 Nebraska Cornhuskers (10-0) faced the SEC champion, #4 Alabama Crimson Tide (8-1-1) in the 1966 Orange Bowl. Due to the fact that #1 Michigan State and #2 Arkansas had both lost earlier that day, this Orange Bowl became the de facto 1965 national championship game. With the win, Alabama claimed its second consecutive national championship and its third in five years. Six players involved in this game went on to be head coaches: Ray Perkins, Jackie Sherrill, Steve Sloan, and Bobby Johns for Alabama, Barry Alvarez and Frank Solich for Nebraska.

One could argue that Bama had a right to claim a portion of the 1966 title as well. Great history in this video...thanks for sharing.

Michigan State and Notre Dame played to a 6-6 tie. The whole 2nd half was 1 2 3 punt. Both coaches were content to sit on the ball to keep from making a mistake and the other team scoring and winning. Alabama was screwed over because of politics....straight up. Look at what was going on in history at that time. Northern sportswriters voted in the AP. What happened at the University of Alabama earlier in '66, Bear Bryant got screwed over from 3 in a row. This is called the missing ring. It's an interesting read.

Alabama has 2 fake National Titles: ‘64 & ‘73. Alabama lost their Bowl Game after the ‘64 season. The entire reason they vote AFTER the bowl games now is because Alabama got 2 fake “National Titles “ after losing Bowl Games. The AP switched to after the Bowl season after Alabama’s fake National Title after the ‘64 season, and the UPI (the coach’s poll) switched after the ‘73 Bowl season after Alabama lost their Bowl Game again and claimed another fake National Title. So 2 Alabama National Titles (‘64 & ‘73) is the very reason they stopped voting the final poll before the Bowl Games.

@@wildmercuryfilms Why would Alabama (or any team for that matter) give back national titles fairly awarded under the then existing rules? The voters of that era clearly understood that any team with plans to participate in a bowl game could lose that game. The 1964 and 1973 national titles that you mention didn’t come with a contingency clause.

He wasn't a bad head coach, either. His çoaching staff that included Bill Parcels, Rex Dockery, and George McIntyre all left him when he went to Ole Miss from Texas Tech in 1978. They were with him at Vanderbilt in 1973-74, when Vanderbilt tied Texas Tech 6-6 in the Peach Bowl. Bill Parcels went on to become the Head Coach of the New York Giants. Rex Dockery was a successful Head Coach at Memphis. George McIntyre was an outstanding Head Coach at Vanderbilt. No wonder Sloan had trouble at Ole Miss. The facilities were antiquated. They were attempting to recruit outstanding black players with the Confederate symbols.

This was actually the first National Championship Game ever played due to the AP poll deciding to withhold its vote until after the bowl season along with #1 Michigan St. and #2 Arkansas Loosing earlier in the day in the Rose and Cotton Bowls. For some reason the AP went back to voting their champion after the regular season in 66 & 67 resuming permanently in 68.

Thanks for this info. I knew the Rose Bowl was earlier in the day, only curious if the Cotton Bowl was going on at kickoff of this game. Wish I could watch the pregame talk somewhere, must’ve been a hangover cure to watch MSU & Arkansas both lose

Think how good Alabama would have been if they recruited the entire South, and not just white players. Amazing. And it's Churchich, not Churchick.
