This promotional film covers the 5th round of the Can-Am Challenge Cup / L.A. Times Grand Prix on the Riverside Racetrack in California on October 29th, 1967. Christopher Constantine Economaki was the commentator and reporter throughout the 62-lap 200-mile event. The film was written and produced by John Toutkaldjian and narrated by Les Keiter with sound by Taylor Braendel. The Los Angeles Times Grand Prix was a sports car race held at the Riverside International Raceway from 1957 until 1987. During the early 1970s, the event was the season ending race for the Can-Am series. The race was sponsored by the Times to raise money for its charities. The Special Events director was Glenn Davis, the winner of the 1946 Heisman Trophy.
The film begins at the Riverside International Raceway in California (00:09). People are walking around the raceway before the race begins (00:12). Race driver Parnelli Jones, driving a Lola T70 Mk.3 Ford, speaks to interviewer Christopher Economaki (01:12), followed by Bruce McLaren, driving a McLaren M6A Chevrolet (01:37), and Dan Gurney, driving a Lola T70 Mk.3 Ford (01:30). Economaki introduces the race of the 5th race in the Can-Am at the Riverside Raceway (01:37). Racecars are driving on the track (01:59). A feature about the sponsorship of Fram Corporation Oil Filters (02:05). The track is announced open for training and qualifications (02:19). An illustrated layout of the Riverside Raceway (03:02). Crew chief George Bignotti is interviewed about his driver, Parnelli Jones (03:44). Jones comments on his previous races (04:05). Crew chief of McLaren racing, Tyler Alexander, is interviewed about his drivers (04:32), followed by comments from race drivers; Bruce McLaren (04:51) and Denny Hulme, driving a McLaren M6A Chevrolet (04:57). Economaki continues performing the interviews of crew chief Wayne and drivers John Surtees, in a Lola T70 Mk.2 Chevrolet (05:20), Mario Andretti, in a Honker II Ford (06:31), Denny Hulme (07:09), and Bruce McLaren (07:31). The crowd gathers around the Riverside Raceway (07:57). Dan Gurney was the pacesetter in trials (08:06). The race drivers are preparing for the race to begin in their race cars consisting of 30 Chevrolet powered cars, two Ferraris, two Oldsmobiles, one Repco, and four Ford-drivers (08:14). The 39 racecars are lined up behind the start line (08:31). Economaki makes commentary of the start of the race (08:38). Bruce McLaren’s racecar has a 500-horsepower engine (08:51). Fram sponsorship feature showing the oil filters used on racecars and regular cars (09:28). Denny Hulme is disqualified due to missing body work over one wheel of his racecar (13:01). He is interviewed expressing his disappointment (13:53). The air is clouded by dust from the dessert surroundings compromising visibility (16:22). Throughout the laps of the race, some cars are damaged, and drivers are unable to complete the race (17:31). Bruce McLaren crosses the finish line as the winner of the 5th round of the Can-Am Challenge Cup, and the audience celebrates his win (23:53). He won at record speed, and people gather to congratulate him (24:11). Bruce McLaren is interviewed about his victory exposing his joy (24:24). Jim Hall takes second place in a Chaparral 2G Chevrolet (25:15), and Mark Donahue takes third place in a Lola T70 Mk.3B Chevrolet (25:16).
