1967 Chevy Camaro Convertible chemical paint and rust removal
Today I am chemically removing all the paint and rust of this Classic 1967 Chevy Camaro prior to its completion restoration. I’m going to take you through the process we use to completely chemically strip cars down to bare metal. This is a more thorough alternative to sand/media blasting with no chances of metal warping on thin panels. This process shows you exactly what you are working with and gives you a blank canvis to work with!
It is a 3 step process
Step 1) alkaline degreaser and paint remover
Step 2) Food grade Rust removing acid
Step 3) Water based rust inhibitor
The total process takes around 6 weeks because we use environmentally safe chemicals.

For some reason, when I see these cars go in the acid bath, I imagine that they're saying "ahhhhhhhhhh" like getting into the shower after a busy day, but for the cars, several decades lol

This channel, for just watch old cares being stripped, is one of the most oddly satisfying channels to watch. And what car nut doesn't dream of the rewards that would come their way, driving around in a 67 Camaro rag top.

Had 67 Camaro RS Convertible back in the daze - rotted in exactly the same spots. The guy I purchased it from was a fanatic taking care of it, so I suspect rust trap areas were engineering Fups. First year/First-gen.

"Look this good you will not, when 56 years old you reach". It looked like just another bondo bandito at first.
@billywird
@billywird 8 ай бұрын
Yes, sir but it is a guess when this Bondo work was performed and also due to the flat rate manual to properly replace a quarter panel would have been cost prohibitive. Also, with the advent of Bondo it was much easier to build up the Bondo and form the panel curves and such. Of course, it will look good and that is all the owner is after and there is no regard for how long the repair will last. And to top it off these vehicles were used vehicles anyways and they were not going to be kept for many more years. All vehicles are subject to environment and care and use as we all know and over a period of time it is of course financially sound to trade in or sell off the old vehicle and get a new one. And along comes us gearheads who have to save them, oh my oh my!!!!!!

Living in the land of salt Ontario that Camaro would be considered as mint condition. Surprised to see that much lead in the back end. Somebody went old school for that repair. I do have a spot for Roger right next to a baby Animal I found in one of my winter beaters.

A first-gen Camaro with THAT little rust? I'm guessing that not only does it not know where Ontario is, it probably hasn't seen much more salt than what's fallen off the french fries!
@billywird
@billywird 8 ай бұрын
Yes sir. When these vehicles were manufactured you can see that the body seams where some panels were joined were soldered (manufacturers talk) and on that Camaro if it had been a hardtop the seams where the windshield frame met the roof would have been soldered. now I have a 1972 Chevrolet 1/2 ton pickup that I had purchased from the original owner and when I stripped the original factory paint off of the cab I could see where some small dings in the cab were repaired with solder. when I was a teenager, I would read all of the books and manuals regarding auto repair and when I started reading about auto body repair the procedure for repairing a dent was explained and the finishing of the panel was lead repair, and then along came Bondo and let the games begin. A new invention "Bondo wagons".

I love the process and how clean the cars come out. I have heard that with “dipped” cars, the paint remover gets into the pinch welds and can ruin a new paint job. Is this just a rumor or maybe a difference kind of chemical?

Poor Roger... he looks like he's earned his retirement! 🙂 I was surprised there wasn't as much rot as I thought there would be. When there's leading on a vehicle like this, when they go to restore it, do they remove it, or let it be and just skim over the top with filler? Also, before you started making videos, was there ever a car that came out of the acid so bad, that the owner just said forget it? Thanx again for a great vid! Hope you and your fam had a nice Thanksgiving!

Nice work. Question... the acid eats the good metal as much as it eats the rust, correct? If so, it makes no sense to repeatly acid dip the whole car to chase the rust spots instead of local blasting because everything on the car, including the rust free metal, will be thinner. I wonder if some of those pinholes that show up were a result of that. Maybe dip in a chelating rust remover that does not attack good metal? Would like to hear any opinions on this.

I’ve been out of the body shop business for over 20 years. What are restorers doing these days to coat and seal after you have done a dip? We always used self etching and epoxy primer, but how do they coat every single square inch that is now stripped to bare metal? Cavities, voids, inside floor braces etc?

I wonder about areas like door skin edges, trunk and hood edges, quarter panel to wheel weel, and every pinch weld. These are layers of metal and no paint or undercoat is every going to get back in there.
