I was there. Got disqualified for a headshot in Kumite; won first place in the Chinese White Belt Forms competition doing SuiLum Hungar Kuen #6 that night. I was the first white boy anybody saw do a butterfly kick. The crowd went wild. One of the best moments of my life. Met James Yimm Lee that after he did the sparring demo with Bruce and got invited to the Jun Fan Gung Fu school at his home in Oakland. Still have the training brochure James gave me. Got invited to the movies in San Francisco Chinatown by Wong Jack Man after that to see my first Chinese Kung Fu movie called "Come Drink With Me." Earned my Black from Al Dacascos in July of 68. Was considered a rising star until I got my Draft notice and joined the Marines in 1969. You can see me in the 1967 Internationals videos of Bruce doing his demo that night; one inch punch, sparring demos with Danny and James, etc. I'm the kid in the grey Gung Fu top sitting on the sidelines with Bobby Sotelo in the black gi. He trophied that night, too. In the videos, you can see me filming Bruce's demo with Roy Spaulding's 8mm camera. Bruce was looking right at us when he said, "My name is Lee. Many people think Lee is not a Chinese name. Well, all I can tell you is, 20-million Chinamen can't be Wong." :-) True story. Pat Regan, instructor in Ch'uan-Fa Gung Fu, School of Chinese Kempo, San Leandro California. (First Haole Black of Sifu Dacascos. ) IF ANYONE HAS ANY PICS OR VIDEO OF MY FORM THAT NIGHT, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I wore Al's black Gung Fu top that night and my blue sash. I'd love to see it. Thank you.

That is amazing . I only trained for a brief time in my twenties ,back on Kauai with Sifu Michael Ng. Those six months taught me who i was and how to use my mind to overcome the limits of my body. This was the harshest part of my life and yet is was also my favorite. I remember days when we were younger..... Thank you for sharing Much respect John Morgan Stoddard

Point karate at this time was not the same as point karate today. Blood was frequent at tournaments, and if you hit a guy hard enough, he would not come back at you with the same enthusiasm. it was bare hands, pre-safety-punch.

I saw Lewis in I think 1968. He had a brutal side kick. These are the days of "quick draw" karate, which is what was taught to non Okinawans. Very little positional tactics, just speed and aggression, which wins until you come up against traditional Okinawa techniques.

Dear participants of this match! There was an apparent speed difference in favour of Chuck Norris, but often acting post actum! I have learned the tactics of Joe Lewis and helped me much to my matches, at my level, of course. What I do not understand is his preference of legs against the inherent advantage of hands! Chuck Norris must have relied on it, along with the referees! All the best and Joe Lewis R.I.P., Paul, 67, retired instructor of Karate and admirer of both.

That's why chuck seemed nervous, anxious etc he knew in a full contact match or street fight, that he'd have demolished chuck, hence the beneficial private mentoring Joe got from Bruce Lee; I believe Joe lewis gleaned more from Bruce's instruction than chuck norris did.

Full-contact was illegal in the United States in this competition, what you see is POINT SPARRING. Look how their hands are down because if you hit a competitor in the face you would lose a point. Look how the three refs had red flags to signal when they saw a tag of the "fighters". Chuck was 7 world champ without leaving the USA. Chuck was a Point sparring blackbelt ONLY. When Bruce Lee died the World needed SOMEONE...ANYONE to fill Lee's place and Chuck was 7 time world champ of point sparring, most people did not know what point sparring was. I once won a match because I was punched in the face. After this Semi-Contact was introduced in the Karate world. Then kick-boxing then Full Contact with rules.

Not a fan of point fighting. I prefer full contact- no holds barred but with padded gloves, foot gear and protective head gear. A fighter can easily get killed in these fights. Huge respect for both fighters. I believe that Joe would have beat Norris in a full contact bout.

Probably better in HD notice these martial arts legends are rarely in actually fights. Watch remy bonjasky footage in k1 fighting if you want to see a true martial artists. All the Dan's mean nothing if you don't have the confidence to execute the moves. When I fought lau gar some of the green belts were better than 1st and 2nd dans and a girl named Sharon at the death squad was better than 90 percent of the blokes and they didn't hold back against her. I could beat black belts in bouts but also I lost to lower belts its far from a exact science , Dan's really mean longevity and commitment to the training not that your going to be a double hard bastard. Get Mike tysons arms held down and he can only bite your ear off 😆

Remember Chuck Norris was fighting like this in 1964. Lee was fighting in Gung Fu at the time and wasn't kicking above the belt yet as one example, switching feet like a boxer, etc until his JKD evolution in 1970. Chuck Norris is displaying many Karate techniques in a real time match against a top rated fighter. This loss is what led Joe Lewis to evolve his art of fighting.
