On This Day 1967, a speed limit of 70 mph was made permanent across Britain’s motorways.
The 70 mph speed limit was trialled from December 1965 to see if it helped reduce traffic fatalities.
In July 1967, the Road Research Laboratory (RRL) concluded that it had, and Labour’s Minister for Transport, Barbara Castle, rolled out the speed restriction permanently.
ITN’s Keith Hatfield interviewed motorists on the M1 about the change, and found that some were happier than others!
