On This Day 1967, a speed limit of 70 mph was made permanent across Britain’s motorways.
The 70 mph speed limit was trialled from December 1965 to see if it helped reduce traffic fatalities.
In July 1967, the Road Research Laboratory (RRL) concluded that it had, and Labour’s Minister for Transport, Barbara Castle, rolled out the speed restriction permanently.
ITN’s Keith Hatfield interviewed motorists on the M1 about the change, and found that some were happier than others!

No need for a 70 mph speed limit on motorways.

Forget it ~ we're now ruled by the unelected Indians who don't belong here. They're used to crawling behind 'Holy Cows' and Indian made Morris Oxfords. !!! 😛 😛 😛 😛

Obviously some cars can easily handle more speed than others same with the drivers

Should scrap the limit on most motorways and make it truly unlimited again, cars have never been safer so that's not an excuse when most small engine family cars can travel quite smoothly, still have decent fuel economy and pretty quietly at 100Mph+. 70Mph these days is just too slow.

It's a difficult one because there are times you have the road all to yourself and then you think "What's the sin in maxing out the car?" Then at merge points you need to make it limited again, but if no one is merging, then it's safe again. Then we usually have the same speed limit for all hours of the day. Why? Because the signs are cheaper than screens that can change? A speed camera will still get you at 3 o' clock on a monday morning. One of the functions of laws are to put an exact definitive statement or action that can be read in court (John Smith travelled at a speed of 93 mph between junction 1 and 2 in lane 2 of the M4 on Saturday 5th October 14:35 in rain of 1 millimetre per hour), rather than a vague (John Smith was driving terribly one sunny afternoon).
