A few videos ago, I walked you though how to manually configure your Holley Sniper EFI for boost using a computer and the Holley Sniper EFI computer software. That is the best option for sure, but I understand that method isn't for everyone, so how about doing it with just the handheld? You'll need an updated firmware to pull it off, but using the wizard as a "Super Sniper" and adding the Turbocharger addon allows you to configure basic boost settings and expands your tables to consider boost. It's a lot better than the detault configuration if you're running boost, but not as good as a manual config. This is the route I'd take if I didn't have a computer, or if I was just getting into EFI and didn't want to get too involved.
You can view my Holley Sniper EFI manual turbo configuration video here: • 1967 Turbo Camaro - Ho...

@TurboCamaro67

@@0569138373 that's actually a great question... I'm not certain there is a defined amount. I've heard of people doing 30-40psi, but you just need to consider the modifications required to seal the carb and the fuel pressure needed. I ran mine with 8# just fine and I'm sure you could get to about 12# or so with my mechanical fuel pump before it couldn't keep up. You can see how you'd be upgrading and modifying your setup the more you increased the boost.

I have a '69, Dart little M block (406 ci), AFR heads, custom ground roller cam etc that's running a roots blower and carb now, I'm planning on going to a turbo and efi. Would you go with this kit if you had it to do over again? I would be looking at the 1250 hp kit. Was thinking fitech but I'm a Holley guy and fitech seems iffy. Should be around 800whp in street trim at moderate boost. Thanks

Hey is it possible to turn off all power to the turbos and run just motor
@TurboCamaro67
@TurboCamaro67 2 жыл бұрын
Anything's possible, however I don't have any experience with it. On my engine, I suspect I could add an electronic, or mechanical exhaust diverter valve/flap that would prevent exhaust recirculation into the turbo and straight out the tail pipe instead or you could use an adjustable wastegate and dial it down to 0 PSI so it doesn't allow boost. Sounds simple, however the EFI/carburetor is tuned for the turbo being "on" so you'd have to have a profile on your EFI system, or be able to adjust your carb on the fly. I think it's less about how and more about why... Why would you want to turn off the super efficient power plant?

Hey, this is a good idea. I hummed and hawed about having the computer portion in my video but took it out as it seemed to be more of a "how to computer" video than Sniper or Camaro. That being said, the Holley software saves the files to a weird path on the card, and opening it isn't quite as obvious as it could be. I haven't done a video in some time due to external issues, but could probably get something together for you. Stay tuned.

I have the Sniper running up to about 8lbs boost. It works perfectly. My understanding is the stock sniper will do up to about 14lbs boost out of the box. However, it is not configured to do any boost out of the box and requires manual manipulation of the fuel tables to work properly. My car drove under small amounts of boost without any initial configuration but it was too lean and unpredictable, hense the reason to configure it before boosting.

So are you running a external map sensor somehow? I’m was under the impression that the base sniper map sensor could not handle boost. Also curious if you found a way to run external because I’m thinking about a weiand blower so the throttle body will never actually see boost.
@TurboCamaro67
@TurboCamaro67 Жыл бұрын
Hey, the base sniper has always been able to handle 1 bar of boost without issue. Holley didn't setup the base software to support boost (preset boost fuel maps) out of the box, but was happy to sell everyone a Super Sniper that could handle more boost without any software configuring. You just have to give the fuel map some direction on fuel flow and timing when you go out of vaccum into boost. I made a video about it years ago. I've never run an external boost setup like a blower so I probably won't be too much help there.

@TurboCamaro67
@TurboCamaro67 Жыл бұрын
Hey, are you asking about seeing increases switching from a carb to the Sniper? Or after tuning it myself? As for the Sniper, their is no guarantee it will lower fuel economy over a stock carburetor, but I can say with some certainty that it will run an "ideal" fuel map from idle to WOT. If your carbeurator is jetted and adjusted and has the proper advance to also run at "ideal" fuel levels, then your fuel consumption would be the same. If you run lean and don't know it, perhaps your carb will save you pennies at the pump, where as the Sniper would correct the lean condition. As a solid sniper install point on this, the position and cleanliness of your air/fuel sensor is critical. If you put the sensor too close/far from the Sniper (or you carb with a gauge) or mounted in the wrong orientation, you could get false readings and that could effect engine performance, and fuel economy. Hopefully that answers your question. Feel free to expand if it didn't.
@ChargerusPrime
@ChargerusPrime Жыл бұрын
@@TurboCamaro67 I'm talking about utilizing the turbo with the efi. Everyone I've met that has a turbo on a modern car has said their fuel economy has increased by a significant amount. I'm trying to make my javelin as efficient as is possible while also keeping its original engine. I'm also planning to use an a518 4 speed automatic with the gear vendors solution for it which will split the transmission gears as well as give me 8 forward gears. Essentially, I'll have an 8 speed automatic transmission along with the turbo.
@TurboCamaro67
@TurboCamaro67 Жыл бұрын
Ahh gotcha. If you're not in boost, then your fuel economy will be the same. When you enter boost your fuel usage will definitely go up in order to support the increase in air flow. However the increase in air and fuel equals a significant power increase over what your engine would do normally in that range. I can't say adding a turbo (with or without EFI) helps fuel economy, but if you are comparing it to a big block, or heavily built small block that would ALWAYS require more fuel, then yes, you get the fuel savings of a smaller displacement when not in boost, but the power of a bigger displacement engine when boosting. In my mind, it's the best of both worlds for power and fuel economy. Which is why so many cars these days run 4 cylinders with turbos.

@@TurboCamaro67 my 304 is stock, it was rebuilt in 2011. I know having the turbo on helps the engine breathe and function better which does increase fuel efficiency. I've seen someone boost a pentastar v6 and he now gets 45 mpg average but that's a 6 cylinder with mds and vvt. I'm thinking with the transmission setup I'm going for along with the turbo and probably a better exhaust system, I may get 30 to 35 mpg.

@TurboCamaro67
@TurboCamaro67 3 жыл бұрын
It's a solid engine and in this configuration produces a decent amount of power, but it's a unique enough of a project to stand apart from most others. If that's a goal for your project then I'd recommend considering the straight 6, especially if it's the original motor, as a permanent power plant. The Sniper system is a fantastic alternative to a carburetor, providing excellent tweak-ability with performance. Other fuel injection kits exist, but going with a name like Holley gives you peace of mind and support if needed.

@@TurboCamaro67 hello, so basically your saying I can buy the basic kit and add the turbo setup to it with these steps and it will run boost? Thanks
@TurboCamaro67
@TurboCamaro67 3 жыл бұрын
In theory, yes. Even the basic 2 barrel Sniper 2300 comes with a 2 bar map sensor, capable of reading 14 Psi of boost. It won't come with the tables setup to inject fuel at boost, but it's not hard to edit the tables with a laptop or even on the touch screen to get it going. Obviously the super sniper versions come boost ready out of the box, but it's not required for budget boosters. The disclaimer is that I don't keep up with build standards for each model sniper so Holley could have changed something to interfere with using boost, but not that I'm aware of. I'd recommend asking Holley or your store of choice before biting the bullet.

@TurboCamaro67
@TurboCamaro67 Жыл бұрын
Hmm, you pose a tough question for me. I "set and forget" my setup literally years ago, and really don't know what's possible now. When I set all this up in the beginning, you HAD to use a computer to input fuel information for boost. The default graphs were all based on vacuum with no scales for boost. You have so many rows on the table and you have to modify the vacuum table to go below negative pressure (vacuum) to positive pressure at least to your desired amount (8-10psi you said) so the sniper knows what to do when it sees that on the bar sensor. So, I don't k ownif the handheld let's you do that now (I doubt it). However to really answer your question, you can use a memory card to move sniper config files from the handheld to a computer or laptop and then save them and import them from the memory card. The accessory data cable just let's you monitor sensors in real time and look like you're in a fast and the furious movie. If you intended to dunno your car at some point, it might be nice to have real time numbers for tuning but you don't need it for street cars or regular trial and error tuning.
