In the 80's I had one of these, same colors even. Unfortunately it stayed outside and rust was a problem. Great car, beautiful. My parents drove it often and really loved it. Funny situation, the gas guage didn't work and I drove it to a friend's wedding. I was a groomsman and the tuxes were white. I was fortunate enough to escort a bridesmaid home but ran out of gas on the way back to my home. I was quite a sight in a white tux pushing a red Caddy convertible down a major street in St. Louis at about 2:00 am. Nice memory.

John Sluder Dude, it was the 80’s and they were considered 20 year old beaters at the time. Like all 20 year old cars Most of them sat outside. Use that big ol brain of yours. What’s shameful is the lack of critical thinking skills constantly displayed by KZfaq demagogues.

The light on the side of the front fender, just in front of the wheel, is a cornering lamp. It comes on with the turn signal to light the way as you turn corners. On GM cars, they usually work only when the headlights are on. On Ford products, they worked any time the turn signal was engaged. Side marker lamps were not mandated until the 1969 model year.

Interesting. I thought side maker lights were mandated for the 1968 model year but come to think of it some Ford's only had reflectors on their rear quarter panels and not lights in '68.
@gregt8638
@gregt8638 5 жыл бұрын
Actually, it was 1968 when all cars were mandated to have side marker lights. Cadillac invented and had these cornering lights since '62. (and they really are a wonderful aid for night time driving )...and BTW the '68 Cadillac was the last to have genuine rosewood paneling in it.
@wmalden
@wmalden 5 жыл бұрын
My Mother’s first new car was a 1968 Ford Falcon Futura Sports Coupe. It had amber reflectors just ahead of the front wheels and red reflectors on the rear quarters. They definitely were not lights. Maybe some cars had side marker lights in 1968 but they were not required until the 1969 model year. 1969 was also the year that front seat head restraints were required.

The "Deville" name to me will always mean class. It killed me in 2006 when Cadillac discontinued the nameplate for this ridiculous 3 letter nomenclature that they used today. When cars had name, they meant so much more. Today's society is so stupid that if it's longer than 5 letters, they can't comprehend anything. It's a joke what new cars have become in name only.

It would seem all the American manufacturers care about these days are SUV's. They don't make anything else like coupes anymore and that's what annoys me. Never mind the land yachts but they can't even bother to make a simple 2 door luxury car conceding that market to the foreign manufacturers.

Gramps had a 68 Sedan De Ville, dark green with black top and interiior. He had 6 Caddy's over the years, but this was the first and best. Beautiful, powerful, and better on a curvy road than the newer ones. It replaced a white New Yorker than was stolen soon after purchase. Grandma drove it home from the dealer, I was 7 yrs. Got so excited, I pinched my mother hard in her arm. That didn't go over too well. But this dark green beast brought great memories. Gramps took me everywhere around metro NYC in that car, plus some long rides too, both educational and in the father role.

I had the same exact car in blue with a white top. Bought it from original owner with 80 k miles in 1979. The original owner of my car owned a Sunoco station and changed the fluids at 500 miles and you could eat off the engine. I bought it at the heights of the Jimmy Carter gas crisis for 300 bucks. Kept it 5 years and sold it for 1500. I thought I was rich. Wish I still had that baby.

For those of us born on the tail end of the 1960s, early 1970s, today's generation has NO IDEA on what they missed out on as far as cars go. In those days, when you pulled up at Church, a restaurant, bank, etc. in one of these babies, people stopped what they were doing and looked at you with awe and with envy. It was such a status symbol to own and drive those magnificent cars. Today it would take a Rolls Royce to feel that kind of presence driving a car.

Very handsome Cadillac ! Over the last few years people have taken a new interest in the "big" cars of the "sixties and seventies". I see where the collectors and investors have taken notice and it's driving up the values of these once overlooked cars. Especially the convertibles. Climate control A/C and an Autronic Eye [headlight dimmer], along with twilight sentinel [dark auto lights on]. Also had a little rubber pad over the floor mounted dimmer switch. Nice. Was made an offer I couldn't refuse, so down the road it went. Still regret taking the offer. You present a nice car. Swap the lifters and replace the leading edge of the hood stainless [actually cast[]. I've yet to see a '68 that didn't have a hairlipped front bumper, so that slides.

Trunk…. tilt and telly AM/FM and vent windows plus optional long trumpet horn A/C criuze control. Twilight sentinel and auto dimming …Etc etc Etc. Beautiful machine. I found mine in 1995 Sitting since 1971. Replaced top in 1998. Still looks like new ….Only one problem u are going to have eventually. Solid lifters ….will dish and you will have a loud ticking The push rods will eventually drop into the oil pan or get bent due to excessive gap. Then u have to do a top end rebuild. Heads will be ok. But intake will have to come off

That clicking Lifter is from a gap but it can't be from wear with just 54k on it. It might be what's called a Pumped-up Lifter where particles in the oil settled inside the Plunger area by the Oil passage hole . The inner Plunger that compresses enough to close the oil hole off and make it solid to push the Pushrod gets stuck by the dirt and debris in the Oil so it can't return back up to align the Holes for oil flow. I can hear the affect in the exhaust sputters and how the Click does go away when the RPM's go up. Some lifters need time to fill up with oil and clsoe up the gaps. With such low mileage I wonder if the owner didn't know to change the Oil by its age since it breaks down like most organic oils . Not worth the labour for just one of the 16 Lifters having to be removed and cleaned out . Maybe a quick Engine Flush at idle could free it up and then do a few oil filter changes at 500 miles might do . That's why I started to place a very strong magnet on the low point of the Oil pan and Oil Filter to attract the metal pieces from wear or the dirt suspended in the oil. Sadly , that 472 cast iron V8 engine might still be wearing in since 54K is nothing to an Engine that can get over 200K if looked after .

I thought the 472/500 c.I had non adjustable rockers on hydraulic lifters. Just like an Olds 350 Rocket V8. It could be a lifter with some trash in it allowing it to not pump up. The old "used car" dealer trick was to pull the trunion off and just lightly hit the bottom of it on the bench grinder and shave a couple of thousands off it and reinstall it allowing the push rod to ever so slightly compress down into the lifter eliminating the tick.
@danielscott6787
@danielscott6787 5 жыл бұрын
Also lets not forget that conventional oil will separate over time and have acid in the oil. Which even at low mileage, sitting over time once the oil has been heat cycled it will break down sitting in the pan.
@garywood9525
@garywood9525 5 жыл бұрын
One other thing if the clicking is from wear. My 390 FORD with the Rocker Shaft system and the Ball&Socket rocker arm could have the over-sized pushrod bought at the Part Counter if you knew the right Gap. But a stuck lifter from dirt and metal filings might come free as my 390 lifter did ,the odd time , but the Over-Sized Rod would now cause a new problem to bend from stress as far too long or affect the cam and Rocker friction point . I've seen some very clean used cars with normal mileage but once i pull a rocker cover it record the history for abuse by few Oil changes where black sludge coats most of the parts . Clean oil in a used car is much like how a House seller put fresh sod on the lawn and a quick paint job on the Porch. Lipstick on a pig still makes it a pig .

By this year was the rear window glass instead of plastic? It looked like this car had a single exhaust. With your quick look at the engine, emphasizing tags, I wasn't able to see if it had A/C. With that black interior it would be a much desired option. Does this car have leather interior and real wood accents? This is a beautiful car. It would be a great cruiser.
