Don Fox was a solid goal kicker and a fine player in his own right, just a shame he's mainly remembered for that moment alone

Legendary commentary from Eddie 'Up and Under' Waring, God rest his soul. Don Fox was a great player but unfortunately will always be remembered for this moment. Now I don't know whether this is an urban myth or not but apparently a couple of days later Eddie took Don to Dewsbury and Don converted 12 kicks in a row from the touchline in his slippers!!

The most famous moment in RL history, and how Don Fox must wish something bigger came along.

The Rugby League Cup final has lost its Glory since those great days . Its the same with the FA cup final in football except the football will always sell out the final because of its higher profile and national footprint. Another thing that's killed the RL Challenge Cup final is the demise of Northern working men's clubs . Just in my little area I've seen 5 close and they all used to run 1 or 2 coaches to the final regardless of who was playing. They were great days out . Into the Club at 7am . Two or three pints then onto the coach the crates of beer on the back seats. At Wembley there were literally hundreds of coaches all lined up from both sides of the Pennines. The biggest problem was the number of 'toilet stops ' as no coaches had toilets in those days .

There was no Superleague Grand Final then.

@@frankhyland6333 Yes the Grand Final probably dilutes the importance and standing of the Challenge Cup so now both of them don't sell out despite the GF being just down the road from everyone. You can throw the 'Magic Weekend' into that mix too. Footballs not immune from this effect as the importance to the big premier league clubs of the Champions League has really devalued the FA cup final and that's shown not by the attendance at Wembley which will always sell out but by the domestic viewing figures on TV which has plummeted . But ... and it's a big but the huge difference is the world wide viewing figures for the FA cup final has gone up exponentially which highlights the problem with RL which is the breakaway over a hundred years ago consigned it to being a small regional affair which was a fatal flaw . Rugby Union with its national and global appeal will continue to flourish even though its an inferior product to watch .

@@simapark We all know the reasons for the battles with Rugby union over the years, and why League was held back. These days even Rugby Union is now suffering, with Clubs in dept or on the brink.I'm sure that if there was no Super League final then the challenge cup would be better supported, and vice versa.

On this day, May 11th 1068 my eldest son was born so for me, it was a double celebration. Plus the fact that Barry Seaborne and I went to the same school in Hunslet

Ohh-ohh you should have seen their faces, Going down to Trinity to see Neil Fox's aces! All the girls and all the boys with smiles upon their faces - Going down to Trinity... To see Neil Fox's aces! (Neil was Don's brother - well obviously) Eddie Waring - bless him - 'poor lad, poor lad!' I was there on that fateful day - Trinity were still our heroes. Bloody hell it were wet though!

THe Challenge Cup is not what it was....like soccer's FA Cup its centrality in the season lost to history. Before Super league came this competition was the be all and end all. Do well in Wembley and you became a mill town legend. Great days.

lets face it Don Fox would have put that kick over 99 times out of 100 - unfortunate that the kick that he missed was in the last minute of a wembley final - a bit like the kick gavin hastings missed against england in 1991 - just shows it happens to the best of them

Today's commentators and cameras would not be on Fox, it would be on the Leeds players as they won. They would not emphasize with Fox because a 'loser'. He's a 'poor lad' as Waring put it. I think even in the heat of the moment Waring knew Fox had something he was going to carry around with him forever. I was 12 when I watched this final and that has stuck with me since.

It’s not as bad a miss as people will have you believe. Look at the try that preceeded it. The pitch was in an appalling state. I bet his boots were sodden, very difficult to stand the ball up, knackered at the end of a game in such dreadful conditions. It wasn’t an open goal. And of course insane pressure. Would still have expected to make the kick.

Don Fox was only kicking because his brother Neil was injured. He got the man of the match a minute later because he'd had such a good game.

can you imagine a commentator today, in the heat of the ending of the game, having any sympathy for the losers. It's all 'power and the glory' stuff now. That is what sport has become - first is first and second is nowhere. 'He's a poor, poor lad' , you're having a laugh! By the way, I don't watch much sport now.

Wow, bitter. I bet you think the ref was in the kickers ear trying to put him off from 7:55 onwards too. Christ it was 45 years ago and you probably weren't even alive when it took place.....get over it!
