Had a 73 white with a cummins ranger 10 speed and the air starter old beast great truck

I thought I was watching an episode of Vice Grip Garage for a minute. Seriously though, remember this. Old trucks are much easier to play with and restore. Its all mechanical, no computers. Hell if you wanted to get a ten speed in it,it would probably bolt right up. Same with an modern air ride rear suspension out of a clapped out Freightliner or whatever.

Our fire department had one with a 3000 gallon tank on it, used as a water tender. No front brakes, originally not power steering. Air assist was added to the steering. Worked great, unless you used the air horn too much, approaching the intersection near the station, then you lost assist. Cummins with a Fuller 10 speed.

Stand on the fender to open hood We had a piece of diamond plate on the fenders to open hood That’s a real truck Make sure the E L D works !

Nice truck. I drove a 72 White 4000,6-71 Detroit and 10 speed Roadranger single axel pulling atilt deck lowboy.

A good ol school radiator shop will cook out dirty fuel tanks or some private tanker wash out shops will acid bath and steam them. Cheaper than building aluminum tanks and more authentic. Cool truck for sure.

I can't believe how solid that is, or appears to be ? Must have been garage kept. If you don't have floors, cab corners or the roof to repair or replace you're in good shape starting out. Your heart will tell you what you should do. I'm surprised it doesn't have a Fuller 10 roadranger though.

Years ago I drove a 67 220 Cummins with a 10 speed. That truck is in better shape than that one was.

Hauled a lot of tomatoes on the farm with a 1968 White 9000 . Hauled 5-8 loads a day for over a month . I had installed a radio on the dash , within 2 weeks it was shaken to its death .

Drove one similar to it pulled a 30' spread with 24 end dump bed ,220 cumalong 5&3 coal and firebrick clay ,

I believe that black knob under the dash on the right of the steering wheel is a compression release , comes in very handy in the winter when the batteries are low , get it spinning and let her pop we had 9000's but tandems , 10 speed and 250 hp , much cleaner engine than our old 220 hp engines good luck great find !

Rode on a kitchen stool behind the shifter between dad and an uncle on trips in a 9000 as a kid to fetch coal during the coal mine strikes to non union mines as a lil kid. Back in the 70's I don't think anyone ever thought about safety. Can remember hitting sky jumps ( big pot holes in the road ) and dad or my uncle would catch me and toss me back onto to the kitchen stepping stool again. Man those were some funnest times. Would get back home from a trip and look like a kid who had been a victim of a child abuse from all the bruises and knots , but would have a Kool story for each one of them. Oh yeah those non union coal mines they were like something from the 1800's. All that old equipment working. Between getting burned out on dealing with customers, I was a machinist when I grew up, so machery always fascinated me. Then I'd drive a while to get away from customers.

Also forgot to mention. Cut an end cap off clean and coat weld back on and grind it smooth. My son does them. It’s a lot !! Cheaper.

It's me again ! I forgot to mention that I bought that B67 from Boston and Taunton Express after they merged with Perkins and started running the Louisville Fords. Paid $1500 for it !!

I owned a 63 for a while. 220 Cummins 10 speed. Round steel fenders. Unfortunately she was too far gone to save and we traded it for another project. It was great fun to play with. All red (except for the rust!!!). And on Chicago wobblers too. I’m glad we are not closer to you or that one might follow me home! Thanks for another great video!

Hi Mike. In the mid 70s I worked at a dairy farm in NM . I drove a truck similar to this one . Only difference is it had the twin stick transmission set up , and tandem axles. Hope you buy this one !

I worked for Wooster Express and drove one of these. We had B Mack's and Whites. The traded the B-Mack's in for the Mack U models when they came out. Boy was the weird driving those U-Models.

I know that the old trucks are alot easier to work on than these new ones. I'm sure there are some ole school wrenchbenders in your neck of the woods that can teach you what ya need to know..

when i was learning how to back up trucks.(mid 80s)the yard truck was an old green smith freight tractor like that.it was a 6 71 detroit with a 10 speed though.im glad i learned to back trucks without power steering.drove a manual steering truck first 12 years of my career.when you spent 11 or so hours in them trucks, you were tired when you were done.if you ran over a dime, you could damn near tell if it was heads or tails.you felt EVERY bump in the road.

Oh Man Mike! That brought me right back to early ‘70s when I was just learning how! No 10 speed Fuller. You’d look good in it! I saw that seat and thought, one step above sitting on a park bench! Lol ! Thanks for the memories!

Nice looking White. I drove one just like it back in the 70’s when the W9000 was in the shop for a week. That front brake limiting valve cuts the front brakes back to 50%. Some trucks didn’t even come with front brakes back then

I used to ride on a milk crate in my old man's U model....

I worked for a farmer in the early 80’s who had a truck like this. It was dark blue and same hood. Old redi-mix truck, twin screw and two transmissions. Had a feed wagon mounted on it and I drove it to a remote feedlot every day I worked to feed around 150 fat cattle. That’s a nice truck! Very nice! Straight sheet metal. The one I was referring to I’m telling you was beat before I ever used it. Hood was bungee strapped on both sides and rattled like crazy. Transmission took awhile to learn. I stopped many times at first and had to start over because I couldn’t get it into any gear. I hated it then grew to love it. I hope you buy it because you very obviously appreciate it

That slippery for when wet or Snowy is there for a reason the professors at the trucking University I attended said if we ever come across it on a older truck not to use it but I did encounter it in a older truck and it was raining I moved it to the wet position then when it quit raining I flipped it back to normal it’s for safety you don’t need the steers locking up on you

When I was a kid in the 70s there was a lot of these trucks running around, but I didn't really like them. Now that I'm older, and haven't seen them in decades I find them to be really cool. That one looks awesome. If I had the money I would buy it.

i was taught how to drive in one of those i was 14 they showed me first and reverse and the release of the air brakes it had a forty two foot flat bed and was told where they want the trailer and walked away leaveing me to figure it out that was the start of a 38 year career of driving trucks

First truck I ever drove was a 1967 White 9000 with a 195 Cummins drove it up and down the East Coast

Unbelievable! That was my first truck with a 250 Cummins, no turbo, and a 10 speed. It was a tractor and I put a dump box on it. This was the truck my Superliner replaced. My truck was painted yellow with a red frame…thanks for the memories. The first place I worked in NJ started hauling there hauling business in 1902 with horse and wagon. There trucks were painted red with yellow frames.

Mike those are the period Correct factory fuel tanks on the truck! My 71 White 9000 rubbish truck had the exact same tanks! I believe if you look at the one at George’s garage in Avon has the same tanks!

I've been watching your channel for quite a while and commented I think once or twice before. That memorial run you went on a couple of weeks ago for "Tippy-Toes" ? Well, I knew him, and he owned and ran a White tractor back in the 60's. Not sure if it was a 9000 or 4000, but he pulled tanker for Roy Bros. out of Billerica. He used to work on it at Miller Disposal's garage in Bedford, Ma., and that used to be next door to the Taylor and Lloyd International dealership that's still in operation today I believe. I was watching you latest truck show video, and there was a '71 Brockway tractor you were showing. The first truck larger than an F750 Ford dump that I ever drove was a '71 Brockway 361 10 wheel dump truck. That truck was owned by my friend Joe Sullivan, and he had bought it from Paul Lloyd, the brother of Eddie Lloyd of Taylor and Lloyd. You might know of Joe, as he ownes J.W. Sullivan Corp. in Billerica and does service station underground storage tank replacements and total upgrades of all the pumps, piping, islands, etc.. He used to rent a bay from the guy your current work truck came from. That's right, when I was working for Joe, driving that Brockway and his R600 Mack with either dump trailer or old Schertzer lowbed, Billy French was in his teens working for his dad, Bill senior, and had just started driving 10 wheeler !! French is still on that property today, but has expanded immensely !! Oh, a pretty cool thing about the Brockway that you might not know ? Those front fenders hinged at the front, and by loosening a bolt back by the cowl, they'd swing out forward, allowing you to step right in around the front wheel just like you do with a tilt nose !!! MUCH easier than going in through the butterfly hood, which of course it had as well. Ok, just wanted to share that with you. One more tidbit---- the first truck I ever went out on the road with in '78 was a '65 Mack B67 single axle with a 711 and a dupex !! Non-turbo, 62 MPH everywhere !!!

Talking about White trucks, my brother and I took a job in Winston Salem NC one time back in 1983 or 84 with a company called hutchens trucking company I believe it was. An old retired freight hauler started the company, well he ran all 48 so we embarked on a 7500 mile adventure in a cab over white road commode that if it weren't for duck tape it would never taken place. No air nothing, 44 Rockwell susp 10 speed 300 Cummins that was so slow at times I would walk along beside of it to stretch my legs. From Winston-Salem we went to Wilmington NC an loaded for somewhere in Vermont then loaded an lit out for Los Angeles and by the time we got to Louisiana everything was in the floor an we had to tarp it to the floor to keep cb an all from jumping out into the road an by then we were ready to fight each other but neither one could get our eye balls to quit jumping. Ive driven many trucks but we took a beating that I never forgot. Thank goodness someone left the duck tape in the truck to put our bodies back together. We decided to seek employment elsewhere when we finally got home. We made it to LA earlier and laid over to mend. We had a big party at the motel and I grilled 15 chickens an one girl took a beaten from another so it was just another day on the farm. Every word I said is true. Wow. Roughest ride I ever took.

Hey Mike. As they say,nothing ventured nothing gained. You checked it out with Teddy so you know what 's what. I trust your judgment. All in all it must have been a thrill when that engine fired up. I know it was for me and I wasn't even there. There may be another opportunity in the future. My experience is timing is everything. Definitely do not want to force it. I learned how to drive truck on my father's 1966 White 4000, it was a tandem drive on a rubber suspension. 250 Cummins with a 4 speed main and 4 aux. Hot as hell in the summer and cold in the winter.

Personally I thought the tanks looked fine. Mechanically older trucks are a lot simpler than the new stuff that needs a computer genius to maintain

The old white has the same shift pattern as my 1963 Kiaser jeep M51, bery cool.

That looks like a great one to get your feet wet with. While I understand tanks are daunting, original photos and some measurements off the truck should be able to yield you a pretty exact copy just without the risk of pin holes, crud in the tank, and well it's good right now but how long are they going to last. Fuel lines are no big deal. Few hundred dollars (i put all new on my 359 for around 350.00) and that White is about half the length of my Pete so maybe even cheaper. I say go for it Mr Mike! You can always resell it.

i was in a family business, we had four old White road tractors. One was a 1967 white 4000 it was a longer nose. It had same battery boxes, one on each side ahead of fuel tanks behind front fender. it was tandem drive 855 cubic inch 250 horsepower cummins two stick 4 & 4 trans. It even had power assist steering.

If the solenoid went bad on the pump we would shut them off by pulling the compression release I’m sure Teddy knows that trick

Great video , I learned to drive a White 9000 with a 10 speed road ranger , I was 16 when my in-law was driving for Grand Union out of Mt Kisco NY. They had a whole fleet of 9000 probably 150 in the yard we would get on 684 and head up to 84 into Danbury CT . He would pull over and I’d get behind the wheel , legs shaking but I learned to drive that baby and the rest of the summer we would go overnite produce runs and I’d get to drive I love those old whites the smell of the diesel and the excitement has stayed with me for 49 yrs. They also had a ware house in Carlstat NJ. The company closed up in the early 90s and they shut down Mt Kisco. That rig sure looks like it could have been a GU truck they were also red , I wish I knew where 300-400 trucks ended up I never really got to see any more around after they closed. But the video was very enjoyable to watch. They also had the old Mickey Mouse clocks with the paper disc to track the engine movement I’d buy one but my wife would shoot me. Thanks for all the good videos.

Drove quite a few of those 9000s some had 10 speeds and some had 15 speeds drove one like that with a custom torque 240 5 speed and they pulled pretty good 👍

But it Mike, it may look like a lot of work it’s not that much. You can find tanks on a white FB group or having them made won’t be to expensive. Doing fuel lines will be nothing while tanks are off. I got a kick out of guy in black shirt, Charlotte pipe and foundry down here in charlotte NC. Best of luck with your decision it’s definitely a parade truck show truck. 😉
