It is trying to make it sound better. COPO is Central Office Production Order. It allowed certain dealers to order options not normally associated with the car. Whether the dealer put one option, or several, it is still only one order to the Central office. This is a multiple option car. The odds of a second COPO (order the engine in one, then order again for the sports car package) being sent and actually making it to the car after the first was made is nil. Normally a second order from a dealer would cancel the first order or build a second car, depending on what they specified.

Arguably about 1,100 COPO's shipped in 1969 and amazingly 23,000 of them are still on the road !

What most people do not realize is the L78 production totals include the COPO 9560 and 9561 cars. WHY? because the COPO was a L78 with, the L78 engine replaced with the 427 and the SS emblems and trim deleted.

I had a '69 COPO. X11 doesn't mean it's a COPO. X11 is base coupe/style trim, which means it has all the chrome trim (headlight trim, taillight trim, rocker trim, quarter panel louvers, and drip rail. My car had the door edge moldings also. That car should have the wheel well moldings too, but most, like mine had them removed for slick clearance. The 427 emblems on the hood are incorrect. Most COPO's were X11 cars.
@AutoArchaeology2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, he liked the Impala 427 emblems better.
@Blackscorpion1963 Жыл бұрын
Most COPOs were built out of bodies coded with X11 or X44. Apparently some early COPOs had X22 or X66-coded bodies. X11 indicated with Z21 Style Trim or Z22 Rally Sport Trim which included what you indicated although I'm unaware of the door edge moldings...however it's not surprising. I'm also unaware X11 included chome rocker trim and again I'm not surprised as I have seen it on many big block 427s.

In Dec. 1969 I was 20 yrs. old and living in Jacksonville, FL when I saw one of these 1969 COPO's (sold new by Berger) street race a 1970 Buick GS Stage 1 with the Stage 2 cylinder head package.race. That Buick idled very nicely so it surprised quite a few onlookers when it beat the COPO on two straight flag-offs for $150, which was pretty big bucks back then. I still remember the small Berger hand-painted scripts at the top of the doors and the "Jardine Headers" decals on the Camaro's rear windows.

Only 40 Double COPO Camaro super cars were made and they all went to Berger Chevrolet in Grand Rapids, Michigan. They have a lower and wider body that offers a much tougher appearance. This lower body set the way for the future of Camaro's, as many models ever since have gone about keeping this same look. There were options to add specific cosmetic packages and trim codes, which would enhance the performance of the car as well as the appearance. The car was basically a street legal drag racing car...

Let's assume it was 41 miles from the dealership to the owner's house. That leaves 200 miles for racing. At most that was only 300 passes. Because you're going to put conservatively 3/4 of a mile per run with the run itself, the burnout and the return to your pit area. So it doesn't seem like it was even raced that much.

Let's clear something up once and for all since apparently not everyone has watched Barrett-Jackson car auctions and heard Steve Mangante excellent description of what a COPO car is. A COPO is an abbreviation for the "Central Office Production Order". A car can only be ordered once, therefore a car cannot be a double COPO. The closest thing to a double COPO would be a Yenko Camaro where Yenko Chevrolet would COPO a Camaro and then do other modifications to it at the dealership.
@AutoArchaeology2 жыл бұрын
You are incorrect, the COPO is the order number. You could order up to 4 different COPO numbers for the Camaro in 69. This one has two COPO numbers. There are a few with three, and only two known with all four of the COPO numbers.
