Restoring a 1969 Pontiac Firebird 4 spd. doing a 4 spd conversion first. Working on converting to a manual transmission from an automatic. Trying to install clutch pedal assembly and not going as planned, maybe you had the same issues or maybe help you prevent the same problems on your install.

i remember that 67-8 pedals were different than the 69. all you need is the correct pedals for the year.

You are right, the pedals I have where supposed to be for a 1969 purchased from a reputable company. I don’t mind doing some fabricating so it was an easy fix.

Great video on the pedal assembly, I need to pull the small brake pedal for the manual trans and put in a bigger auto trans pedal on my ole Bird!

Thank you! This wasn’t what I expected from Ames but I still say they are fantastic at what they do and still plan to keep using them for my Pontiac needs. Maybe you can sell your pedal to Ames and say it’s for a 1969 bird 🤣

My dad and I did a stick swap in our 72 lemans wagon last year. 5 speed though. Lots of hiccups along the way.

Yeah I would think so but a 72 wagon with a 5spd wound be awesome to drive and i am sure made it worth the effort.

you would think ames would have sent the correct bracket, i stold a bracket out of a 69 camaro for my bird when i installed the st10 worked great,

Normally Ames is great, I am sure they would have made it right if I gave them the opportunity. I did not want to wait when I say an easy solution right in front of me. I did call Ames and let them know about my issue I am sure they will fix it before they sell anymore

So I’d assume reverse engineering this that a conversion from a manual trans to auto that a guy can simply swap the brake pedal shaft ? - yes ? Your videos are helpful … even if used to be different

Correct the only difference is the large pedal vs small brake pedal. Then the neutral switch is located back on the column instead of clutch linkage.

It has been awhile since I have messed with standard tranny stuff, but you might need to add another cruise control switch to your clutch pedal. Great adaptation on the assembly!

You might be right, I will look into that. This is the first conversion on a first gen I have done it’s been a bit of a learning curve. And I appreciate any input or advice.

It's not that's great fabrication my Firebird brother I'm very sure this video will help a lot of people it also shows there is nothing like original parts but with great skills you can make it happen 👍

Could you have used a 1969 Camaro pedal assembly? They are just about everywhere online.

The answer is yes if original didn’t matter. So in my case it would have been a good plan. Lesson learned.

Just like a lot of aftermarket parts you have to modify them they probably sent you Camaro parts boxed wrong !lol..

After some more research it appears the pedal support bracket was for 1967-68 Firebird. It was listed for 1969 in the Ames catalog and the picture looks exactly like what I purchased. I have informed Ames of this issue and hope they resolve it before the next one they sell.

Thank you! 👍 Ames is great I will still use them! I have for nearly 20 years and have been happy with my purchases. We all make mistakes and i am sure they would have let me return the part but I still needed one so I modified it. I have called them and made them aware of my situation and believe they will correct the issue.

Hello there, curious if you have installed your steering column. Read on a forum that the 67/68 brake pedal will hit the 69 column... Just curious if you ran into this issue? Going to be doing a similar modification to my 69, since 69 bird clutch pedal assembies are next to impossible to find. Great video, Mike

I just finished assembling the column and plan to install it this week so I will let you know, I do have a source for original 1969 bird pedal assemblies, used of course and cheaper then what I paid for the wrong ones. Unfortunately found it after I bought and modified mine. I will keep you posted.
@VinylVillageGarage

Ok curiosity got the best of me. I test fitted the column it clears fine. So maybe a non modified 67/68 pedal assembly won’t work? I will be posting a video on it sometime soon. Good question! I hope this will help others too.

Take a look at your 68 car, see if Ames sent you one for a 67/68 car, I got a feeling (and from the look of it) they did. Also, the very thin cheezy taillight switch holder is a pain in the neck to get the peddle to put enough pressure on the switch to close the circuit for the brake lights to come on & off, I fought that problem for decades! on my 4 speed 400 car and have the tickets to prove it.
@VinylVillageGarage
@VinylVillageGarage 2 жыл бұрын
I did confirm it is 68 pedal assembly, I even reached out to Ames and I hope they do something with that info. The picture in the catalog is exactly what I got too. Unfortunately I think they got it wrong. I will keep that in mind with the brake switch too. Not sure how much I will be using the brake though….🤣

I think Aames should refund you 50% of the total price you paid for the set of wrong parts they sent you. We consumers pay good money and they just slap any old part in a box and send it out. If Aames is going to be so careless , we need to put the word out to the other guys DO NOT BUY AMMES PARTS BECAUSE THEY DON"T CARE WHAT THEY SEND YOU ! Also if you complain to the BBB and demand a partial refund Aames will correct the problem unless they really want to lose business ! I know doing this is a real pain but we will be helping those less fortunate in fabrication skills.

I did inform AMES of the issue, I agree with you it’s not right to sell the wrong parts. In this case they will not work what so ever without major modifications and the old pedal. I don’t know if they did anything with the information or pulled the item from there inventory. I hope they did some checking into it For fellow bird builders and their sake.

I am changing my Firebird to a manual trans from the slushomatic. What was the company you bought the pedals from for this project? Mine is a 67 so not sure they are the same.
@VinylVillageGarage
@VinylVillageGarage 11 ай бұрын
The pedal assembly for 67 is not the same as 1969. With that said the one I bought for this car was correct for 67&68 even tho it was sold to me as a 1969 assembly for just over $300, not cool. Good news is you can buy the pedals for about $100 for 67. www.summitracing.com/parts/amd-w-597

Yup 67/68 pedals. Sad part Ames sold them to me saying they where 1969 so I paid the premium, not very happy. I told them not sure if they updated their catalog yet so ask before you buy. I found a set of 1969 pedals used of course for $300 wish had bought them now.
