That's a true classic! Brings back memories of my neighbor's 1969 Thunderbird, but theirs had the suicide 4 doors. It was white with a black vinyl Landau top. This 2 door is a sporty model with that copper paint job. Healthy sounding 429. These are cars you rarely see on the road today. Cars had so much more class back in 1969.

Thank you for sharing this awesome car story. I had a 1970 Thunderbird which was given to me by my uncle. Of all the cars I owned this was by far my favorite. It was so futuristic for its time and had plenty of power on up hills. I wish I never sold it. Thanks for the memories.

My father had a burgundy 4 door T-bird (with suicide doors)... it was such a futuristic / concept car looking machine with its giant "jet intake" grille (with hideaway headlights)... and those rear "full bar" sequential taillights. What a gloriously "Jetsons" ride. Wish we still had it, sure stands out today as a shining example of Ford concept car luxury !

@@loucostabile ... VERY similar... ours was a darker metallic burgundy and a 4 door, but the taillights are the same. The 69 had split taillights, while the 68 had a full solid bar taillight. Subtle changes in those years, but all very classy with T-bird logos everywhere!

Great car ! Had a 1969 4 door Thunderbird . Bought it in 1997 . Had 38,000 miles on it . Burnt orange and white vinyl top . Had every option except door locks and all worked . Never a winter driven car and no rust or pitting on all the chrome and white metal trim . Had same wheel covers as yours . Classy car. Wish I would have kept it .

Great car, great colour, and the owner did a spectacular job with the engine and a/c. Runs really quiet with no valve tick. There were actually three body styles in this generation. In addition to the 2 door landau and the 4 door pillared sedan, there was a 2 door hardtop with smallish rear windows. Interesting design that is rarely seen on the roads these days.

Between my Dad and me we had three of these from this generation of T-bird, two 4-door and one 2-door. A big problem was rust and maybe that contributes to their present scarcity.

Integrating the A/C into this car took some great skill. Really nice work. The only T-Bird I recall like this was a '67 Landau owned by one of my aunt's friends. He drove it a long time and it was always unique looking. He was an artist and an antique collector and he appreciated the lines of the car, I'm sure. Thanks for showing us this car inside and out. I remember seeing only a handful of these cars back in the 1970s. Thank you Kelly for keeping it original.

¡Saludos cordiales, Lou!

Hi, Lou! I just had to check this one out because this is definitely a car you don't see every day. Even T-Bird fans don't seem to give a lot of attention to this 1967-1971 generation, which was the only generation that included a four-door, which would be especially refreshing to see. Kelly sure picked a great one here in that copper shade, and the big sail panel and wraparound rear seat really give it an air of exclusivity. It's great that Kelly is keeping this as original as possible. I think most of us want to see these cars as we remember them. Many thanks to both of you for taking us all on this rare Bird flight!

What a beauty! This vehicle is superb in looks, even today! To me, this cars back in the late 60's had an eye for envy. Huge 429 V8 made some speed...429 Ford engines were NASCAR "approved" in auto racing if I remember. This car was an executive favorite (as shown in ads and TV commercials) Lou...you do such a good job in all these classic car shows...giving the person showing the car the proper pride and joy of ownership and when they showcase the cars. Have any of the passenger cars you've done been a 1966 Rambler Classic four door with a 232 6 cylinder...Pontiac '66 Le Mans coupe with a 326 V8 and automatic...1970 VW Fastback? I had the joy of driving them and owning two: the Pontiac (my very first car I bought in September of 1970 [$650]), and the VW, which a four on the floor I was given by my folks in December of '75 ? The Rambler was one I drove at times after I got my operator license in 1968. My folks bought it in April of 1966 (in fact, it was April 23...a Saturday) My very first car date was in that yellow/black car...That was late June in Indianapolis.

One of my friends in high school in the late 1970s had a 1968 T-bird coupe factory 429 Thunderjet. With 4 people in the car, that car would outrun most of the tuned-up muscle and pony cars that put up a challenge. It was quiet and comfortable, solid and dependable, fast and fuel thirsty, and I always wished I had one.

The '70 and '71 with the "beaks" were the same gen too, as hard as that is to believe. Tip: Front clips from the nice looking '67 - '69's will bolt right on and fix 'em. ;) What's cool about some of the "beak" car's is, they also offered a sort of fastback roof in some. In fact, most have it. It's far less common to see the "beak" cars with the normal back ends. A front clip put on one of the fast back style with some mags, a rear spoiler and a blower through the hood, or a big hood scoop, would make for a MEAN looking muscle car! One day I might build such an animal. Most of the "beak" cars, have nicer, plusher (cloth) interiors too.

I had a 69 thunderbird in high school in 1973. I bought it from a cheapo car lot on old Route 66 Oklahoma City for $1100. Also a landau with factory sunroof. It also had factory cruise control 8-track player, console, P/W and power driver's seat. It actually was a one owner car with 80,000 miles but must have been hard miles. The 429 had a rod knock every time you started the car and the transmission slipped a little. However, despite all of that, I drove it to Northern California and back from Southern Oklahoma with the cruise control set to 77mph on the interstates. The last cheap trip before gas prices shot up. I have always liked the 69 but I only ever wanted a true hardtop, which had no vinyl and also had the rear quarter windows.

Nice! Always liked this generation, even though I've owned one from the generation before, a '65 white/red when I first moved to CA. Found it for $400, had non matching wheels, smoked like a mosquito truck, but the body (needed paint) all straight and interior perfect! After paint, complete restore of engine, trans, wheels, brakes, etc. and $2800.00 later, it was beautiful. This '69 in the 2 dr. Landau option is a find. The suicide door 4 dr. I wouldn't say no to either.

When these were new the local Ford dealer rarely kept these in stock due to the high price. I remember two, one of which was a two door Landau like this. I used to hang out at the dealership and everyone working there knew me. One day the dealership owner asked me if I wanted to see a magic dust cloth. I was 12 so I believed him. He had me wiping the dust off the cars in the showroom one of which was the Thunderbird.

Lou ... Years ago when I was just a kid , "Hot Wheels " the toy cars were brand spanking new & the had many cars they produced in miniature for. I had this suicide doors Thunderbird . In the print outside the box listed it's Real Life model specifications & list of equipment. I was so overjoyed to have it. I got both this one & a 68 SS Camaro I bought @ the same time. Just a coupla years later my Favorite Aunt purchased this same car here in this video & her husband Purchased the SS 70 Camaro. Was I blown away or what.! Yep those were the days my friend. Those two Uncle an Aunt were childless & embraced me & my siblings as there own. My Mom had divorced my Dad. Yup he had his interests in another lady. Everything turned up fine for all involved. But my love of Cars had changed from High HP cars to more Luxurious ones. My reasoning was sure it's fun to go fast but everyone spends more time going the speed limit & following posted speeds. So I thought it'd be Far better to be surrounded by luxury or be stuck with a basic no frills interiors. I chose Luxury. To this day that's what I have for my daily driver. My Lexus. Uh don't get mad @ me now I still run around most Sundays in my Dad's ol 71 Lincoln Continental. Yep that's my jewel I keep pristine & covered up in my Garage. Regular oil changes .. monthly checks of the diff & recently changed the tyranny fluid. Twice. Let's not forget the Torque Converter has got quite a bit of Trans fluid in it too. Replaced the radiator w/an all aluminum. Constructed one. Triple Core. My Dad lived near Death Valley & the Heat there is uggly hot . He didn't drive much had very poor eyesight after 63yrs living. Did lots of welding through the years took a toll on his eyesight. I got the car as a gift from him on his 70th B-Day. Really got all my Siblings riled up but I'm the ONLY mechanic for there cars & I'm a licensed mechanic by trade. Retired now but they really were pizzed off I got the Car. Anyhow I still take out my Green beauty & take her to church & it still gets ooh's an ahh's wherever I go.

"NICE!" I was 10 when that T-Bird came out, and I really liked them. Very cool cars, but then I saw a 69 Cougar and that's the one that I loved. They kinda have the shape of the T-Bird but slimmer. Oh boy, the green of that year was so cool, and with the white interior, WOW! Yup, the T-Bird was cool, but the Cougar was "SAA-WEEEET!"

That back seat is too cool. It looks like a bordello back there. If the interior was red it would be too much. lol This is the 1st of the T-bird pimp DNA. I love the " Copper Flame Metallic". Infact I just painted an RC car of mine pretty much that exact color. Great video Lou...always on point.

Yes excellent have always been a T-Bird fan 69 I loved the big boy luxury era 72 - 76 and the Aero birds 83- 88 and the last one the 95 - 97 and I thought that last attempt 2002 - 2005 was cool but not for me because I am a very tall at 6’5” if some of your older fans recall the old Perry Mason series his Private investigator Paul Drake drove T-Birds throughout the the run of the series and always focused on him using the swing away steering wheel feature

1969 Ford Thunderbird. The Ford Thunderbird would first be introduced in September of 1954 for the 1955 model year as a personal mid-size luxury car, possessing luxury options that are now common on standard vehicles today, such as Air Conditioning (A/C), Power Steering, Seatbelts, and Spare Wheels at the back. It came with the 4.8 Litre or 5.1 Litre Lincoln "Y-Block" V8 and came with a 3-Speed "Ford-O-Matic" Automatic Transmission or regular 3-Speed Manual Transmissions. The base price for the car was higher than the Chevrolet Corvette, at around $4500 to $5000 ($51,000 to $57,000). The MPG (Miles Per Gallon) this car made was around 18 Miles Per Gallon. The car sold around 53,000 units. The second-generation Thunderbird would be released for 1958 and lasting until 1960 (This was common for the early T'Birds, with each model lasting around 2 years to 3 years) as a newly redesigned full-size luxury car (The first generation 1955-1957 T'Bird was 185 inches, while this T'Bird was increased by 23 inches to 208 inches). The car was redesigned with quad headlights at the front, an extremely big/redesigned grille, and redesigned rear taillights surrounded by ovular pieces of metal. The 1961-1963 Thunderbirds and 1964-1966 Ford Thunderbirds were designed similarly with the same design features and luxury features, such as A/C, Seatbelts (Luxury), an aggressive front end, circular taillights, and a high price tag. This generation of the Thunderbird (1966-1971) would introduce a dramatically new front, side, and rear end design. For the front end, it featured a grille that covered the entire front end of the car with vertical/horizontal lines and a bird that would cover up the middle section of the grille along with hide-away headlights. It would also introduce foglights and side turning signals on the front sides of the car. For the rear end, it would be completely redesigned switch to rectangular taillights and have a "T H U N D E R B I R D" script in the middle of the rear fascia. They would introduce the Ford 385 V8 and Ford FE V8, with the 385 V8 being used on other of Ford's luxury cars and their sisters, such as the 1968-1971 Lincoln Continental Mark III.

I owned a 69 Landau in light blue with dark blue fabric interior. It had an electrically driven sun roof controlled by a rocker switch mounted in the overhead panel. I was told that it was the only 69 with a sun roof, made as a show car for touring fairs and car shows of that era. I was the second owner after it was retired from show biz. The car was equipped with cruise control.
