It's widely accepted that these engines made 410+ hp at the crank stock. Gobs of torque, too. They were great all around street engines and the bottom ends were pretty tough.

Ahhhh, memories: Owned my 1970 428CJ RA, 4-speed for 4 years. Fiberglass Shelby nose, Hooker, Accel, Holley 4150 750, competition valve job, etc.... 3.00:1 diff. Very fast car. Plus turned 2100 @ 60mph. Sold it to buy a Boss 429.

When he mashes on the throttle you can see the front end of the car lifting up from the torque of that motor and THAT SOUND anybody who has conducted a symphony orchestra knows what I’m talking about

I have 68 s code car but it has a 428 cj in it it’s an old drag car engine is set up just about like yours except I have a msd dist and 370 gears when it was raced back in late 70s early 80s it had 456s in it and some differtant engine parts it ran 11s et those FEs run good when they are breathing good thanks for showing your video

This model Mustang I once owned , 428 cobra jet , shaker hood , had a factory Hurst 4 speed , and it ran like a striped ass ape ….. the new mustangs just do not compare .

Dad said no, "its 1200 dollars, Trust Me" Didnt work. He countered with "you know what Mom would do to Me?" He only won because he was bigger than me. Red with the good stripe auto louver and spoilers. No ac or shaker. I later did own a 68 1/2 cj auto.

I am going to begin my restoration on my 68 GT 390. I found the car on the side of a guys house in 1984. I paid,,,,Please sit down....200 dollars for it!...and i can finally afford to work on it. My stang runs but the 390 is just restricted beyond belief. No wonder these cars were beaten by the camaros in 68. My car came stock with a 600cfm carb? When i get done with this 390 i know it will move real good. Why did ford release these cars like this? Alot of potential in this 390 Hi/Po.

I never said anything about 30? 20mpg would be my target with something like this which is damn good for any V8 let alone a Carbed one. I know a guy that used to drive his white 66 Mustang everyday and literally nothing has happened to it. Now, leave the window down, the car running, and the doors unlocked and you are just asking for trouble. He also installed an electric alarm system so... It's not THAT bad to run these things occasionally.

2-3 more gears won't make it a whopping 30 mpg cruiser, it still has a huge motor in it gulping gas. And with these cars they are so rare and valuable that if you drive it as your daily commute car, it's bound to get vandelized by some jealous ass, or in a wreck, trust me, parts for these cars are not cheap whatsoever, to get good mileage it's going to need way more than just gears. Plus having it as a weekend cruiser, and going out for a joy ride is plenty for me :)

No really a 6 speed can really help these old muscle cars get amazing gas mileage. Set up the 6th gear as a overdrive and use the 1-5th as driving gears and you get an amazing cruiser on the highway thats still capable of gluing you to the seat at a stop sign.

Its funny to listen to the youngsters talk about 6 speeds and all that. I don't remember telling guys with 1932 fords to put small blocks chevies in them. It was probably their dads who did that kind of cross breading. Youngsters acting like their so much smarter than we were. Youngster should have fist fights rather than shoot each other because their too scared they might get hurt.Back in the day when this Mach I was built you would have probably gotten your faced punched in for mouthing off.

It is tuned real well. Question; how do you keep the hood scoop from moving with that engines torgue? Is the scoop attached to the hood or the engine? Did you rebuild the engine yourself? What size carb? Stock exhaust manifolds? The engine sounds like it breathes real well.

why don't you replace the transmission with a modern day 6 speeder? would certainly improve the performance not just fuel wise ;) as you'd use more of the rev range and torque band...

I know the 427sohc could be in a automatic transmission but could the cobra jet be in a automatic transmission or did itnhave to be a stick?

Well im not rich and I don't feel like filling up the tank 2-3 times a week thats close to $80-$100 a week just on gas, no thank you. And it depends on where you are, if you're in constant bumper to bumper traffic which is with me, and that is why I prefer not to drive my classic in conditions like that. Now if you aren't in traffic, it's a nice day, and you take the back roads, or if the highway isn't busy, then I would be saying hell yeah i'd love to drive it two or three times a week.

I sure hope that's a 4 speed. I was trying to pay attention to your shifting, but I stopped looking.

My favorite Mustang! On 2006, I added a hood scoop, and had the center painted satin black like Mach 1's, and added the rear window louvers, and a chin spoiler. But wish it had a K code engine! Do you still have this Mach1? I see this video was made some time ago. Almost bought a Boss 429 in 1970, but the dealer wouldn't give me a fair trade in price, for my 69 Plymouth Roadrunner HT, with a 383 and lots of goodies on it! JWB
