1969's Zombie Sleepwalker ft. dancer, Fuji | Can she handle it?

One of my favorite things to do on the show is to make cocktails from obscure vintage recipe books. In this episode, we take a look at the Okole Maluna book from 1969. Now the late 1960's and 1970's were a bad time for tropical cocktails; Overly sweet syrups, questionable proportions, and mostly garbage rum. This zombie recipe comes right from that era. Join my dancer/ model friend, Fuji, as we battle the Zombie Sleepwalker from 1969.
To make the the drink in the video you will need:
--------------------------------------
1/2oz fresh lime juice
1 dash (?) papaya juice
4 dashes (?) cherry brandy
4 dashes (?) apricot brandy
1oz dark rum
1oz 'Jamaica' rum
1oz light rum

"Pour this atomic fluid into a tall glass filled with cracked ice. Top it with 1/2oz of 150 proof rum. Stir lightly. Decorate with cherry and slice of orange, serve with long straw. A lot of work, but guaranteed to put you in the land of the sleepwalkers after three drinks."

Isn’t a dash typically 1/8 teaspoon? Think of a dash of bitters. You wouldn’t put 1/4 oz of bitters in a cocktail.

Typically now, but 60 years ago all bets are kinda off. It doesn't seem like the 1oz pours are right though, I'd go with 1/4 or 1/8 tsp not 1/4 oz also.

Lovely episode, Spike! My lady and I had recent occasion to roadtrip up to the Napa Valley Museum and visit their exhibition “Tiki Dreams: From Far-Away Fantasy to Pop-Culture Phenomenon”. I would highly recommend it. One thing I really appreciated about it was the fact that they focused on Bay Area Tiki, which I hadn’t been aware was such a rich area! (other than San Francisco, of course - it’s Tiki history is well-charted). There were Tiki bars in many of the smaller cities around the Bay that I’d never heard of - like the Lanai in San Mateo and Tiburon Tommie’s in (where else?) Tiburon. We went when they were having one of the events there and it was lovely. The event mugs are super cool too!

Am I confused about the Christian Brothers VS Brandy which I believe is a grape Brandy that was used for your cocktails instead of an actual Cherry Brandy that was called out in the recipe? From what I saw, they only offer Peach, Apple & Honey flavors. That and the 1/8ounce previously mentioned instead of the 1/4 ounce for a dash may help. Was there some pre-gaming going on this evening?

Good episode, but you didn't do anything to convince me to try the drink. Unlike the classic Trader Vic Mai Tai, the Zombie is not really an easy drink to get a good recipe for (sort of like the Singapore Sling that way), and, my friend, I'm afraid that life is too short for me to want to make a bad riff on the Zombie. (I probably made ten versions before I found one that I was satisfied with, and this one involves my own component with a secret recipe, a la Donn Beach.)

OK, now I see the error of my ways (or at least this one way...). Yes, outlandish proportions. Basically 3 to 1 rum in the drink. I mean, a Zombie's SUPPOSED to be strong, but THIS?! Yeah, fiddling with the proportions of the other ingredients (half of which are liquor, fer cryin' out loud!) is probably necessary for making this even remotely drinkable. I was just so stoked that you were doing a cocktail episode I failed to note the details. 🙂
