Join us as we feature and drive this genuine 70 AAR Cuda 340 6 Pack!
The AAR Cuda was one of the toughest looking cars ever to leave the Plymouth factory. Designed to race in the USA's Trans Am Racing series, doing battle against Ford, Chevrolet, Dodge, AMC and many more, with the likes of Boss Mustang, Dodge Challenger and the Z28 Camaro just to name a few. The AAR Cuda left the assembly line with a 340 Six Pack engine combination under the hood and a host of other high performance option of which was de-stroked to comply with a 305 cu engine capacity rule for the category.
In 1970, Plymouth entered SCCA Trans-Am racing, contracting with Dan Gurney’s All American Racers to build and campaign cars to be driven by himself and talented young gun Swede Savage. At that time, SCCA homologation requirements dictated that a manufacturer build a minimum of 2,500 street versions in order to compete. The single-production-year AAR Cuda met the requirements with over 2,700 cars built during a five-week period between March and April 1970.
The AAR Cuda was different from the regular Cuda in many ways. It featured a unique strobe stripe, incorporating the AAR Cuda logo.
The hood was lightweight fibreglass and featured a functional scoop, drawing in fresh cold air.
It also featured unique front eyebrow spoilers, a rear ducktail and exhaust outlets exited out the sides in front of the rear wheels.

@@aarmancuda3570 True, but I think it would have given a clearer picture of the AAR as a whole if he had mentioned the entire production run. Otherwise, you're like the guy going "but it's 1 of 200! It's x color and has a AM/FM/8-track, and the left window is difficult to roll up. How many had that?"

I used to have a 340 in my VC Val, but ut was unrully, as soon as i fitting a worked 318 it was a different beast altogether. Much more refined more a cruiser than a racer.

I bought a '70 AAR cuda, yellow with black stripes, and I notice the common warp in the hood, I could see my spark plugs without lifting the hood and I had two hoods replaced. God, I wish I had kept it.
@budlanctot3060
@budlanctot3060 2 жыл бұрын
That's true. Many, if not most, AAR hoods are warped/bowed-up and don't match the fender top profile very well. I know mine is bowed-up and was that way when I picked it up with 9 miles on the odo.

The carbies are not original, they should have centre pivot float bowls and the outboard carbies do not have metering blocks and are vacuum operated, not by mechanical linkage.

Who knows why Aussies persist in driving on the left. It deprives them of many great limited-production cars that are not available in right-drive versions.

That Carb setup you have on there is an abortion...looks to be the GM setup as the fuel inlets are on the wrong side, wrong float bowls on the carbs, no vacuum canisters on outboard carbs, and the linkage is all wrong for Mopar. WTF mates???? Why would you do that the right stuff is still all available...

You’re correct. These are the wrong carbs. These are GM carbs. The mopars look tougher with the center hung float bowls and the big vacuum pots on the side.

And the fender tag shows this was a light green metallic, formally called “Lime Green Metallic” with code FF4, but not the lime green everyone thinks of for Mopar in 1970 which was “Lime Light” code FJ5. Great color change for this AAR to orange and the interior color change from F8 - Dark Green Vinyl to X9 - Black Vinyl was also a good choice. Somebody hated Green on Green. 😆

This is a pony car, not a muscle car. Its chassis is more compact. Pony cars could go around corners as well as drag race. To keep costs down, Chrysler’s new-generation Challenger is built on a mid-sized, not a compact chassis. It is too big. And it lacks the original’s fuselage design, where the rocker panels fold underneath the body.
