This 1970 Buick Sales Ideas training film, The Sportsman's Buick, explains many features of the new GS 350, GS 455, and GS Stage 1 as well as the Riviera GS. This dealer organization training film was used to educate the dealership sales staff. Watch closely and you will likely notice a few errors in the information presented such as mentioning the gear ratio in the Riviera as 5.42 instead of 3.42.
This video was originally a filmstrip with the sound coming from a companion 33 rpm vinyl record that contained beeps to indicate when to advance to the next slide.
Key moments:
GS350 @3:58
Stage 1 Option @6:06
Riviera @9:32

Really enjoyed this. Hilarious. My stepmother had a GS455 Stage 1, bench seat and a huge Hurst shifter. It was a badass ride.

My dad was a Buick loyalist, in L8 1969 he got his '70 Riviera GS, he loved it. Every summer we'd drive from NY all the way to Coral Gables,of course dad did all the driving. He Never ordered cruise control,but, instead got the speed buzzer. When he exceeded the set speed we all knew. Great long distance traveler. Plenty comfortable with very large trunk. When he traded for the '73 Electra the only disappointment was the 455 Not having the same juice. But, he just loved Buicks since the mid '60s. What Buicks are today,he would turn in his grave. His last Buick was '96Roadmaster. He was impressed again. Boy, I miss my dad, & his new Buicks. Gr8 video,thanks!!!

Nifty series of videos! Funny how it all came together in 1970 for the GS with the only year of 455 cubes and high compression along with peak styling! Unfortunately the 70 riviera was a styling pig in 1970.

I agree that it all came together in 1970 for the GS. It's one of my favorite muscle cars of all time (we have a couple of them :) ).

Wow, a 5.42 differential gear on the Riviera.

Going 77 mph requires 5,500 rpm! The film writer, narrator, and editor were obviously not car enthusiasts.

@@TheSteeleGarage was that a typo? Should be 3.42?
@TheSteeleGarage
@TheSteeleGarage Жыл бұрын
@@twinturboshow yes, the company making the original slides and the narrator were obviously not knowledgeable about cars to miss the 5.42 gears error. According to my calculator at 5,500 rom the car would only be going 77 mph with 5.42 gears and a 26" tall tire. :) Yikes!

As an owner of 71 GS350 Convert, it was interesting to see how these were introduced, but narrators speech voice was horrible to listen. Anyway thanks for posting this.

I agree. His voice reminded me of the robot on the 1960s TV show, Lost In Space. Thankfully he was not the narrator for the 1972 Buick videos I have posted.

Buick didn't want to outshine Chevy in the numbers game. Being the smaller outfit, the numbers were changed to protect the quilty.

5.42 gear in 70 riviera? 3.42?

Yes, 3.42 is what he should have stated. I have found several errors in these old dealer training films from Buick and Chevrolet.

5.42:1 axle ratio on the GS Riv? I think not. That big 455 would be spinning at about 4600 @70MPH!!!! I'd guess that's nearly redline!!

That was a typo. 3.42 is correct. I’m surprised the marketing department didn’t pick up on that.
