Nick rebuilt the 440 Six Barrel for this beautiful 1970 'Cuda, but once he got it back in the car, a noise has started coming from the engine. Today, Nick will try and track down the issue so he can deliver another dream car.

I love the no nonsense approach, instead of the manufactured soap opera that other shows go for. Just all about the cars and ZERO drama, as it should be. Love it. 👍

Yeah Nick's Garage show is just like the cars he works on. Simple no nonsense and no drama like 700 miles of computer controlled wiring, just cars as they should be.

Jealous of how many gems you get to put your touch on, keep up the great work! Also note in watching threw this entire episode you just helped me solve a very similar noise i have after decking the bottom end 1978 400 and the heads from a 1971 440. I had no idea about the shim on the rocker arms trick. Thank you again for your priceless knowledge Nick!

I was coming off the highway back in the middle 80s and there was a Tor red 70 Challenger RT in front of me waiting for the traffic to get out on the street. He gassed it to get in front of another car coming off the offramp to get on the street and although I didn't hear anything from the RT, but I saw two black marks on the road from the rear end as he goosed it a little because the car on the street in front of us wasn't letting him go. He wasn't even trying to smoke the tires but this car had so much power it easily lit up the tires without a sound or the driver even trying! I can't imagine how fast that RT Challenger really was, but I definitely know it was a beast!😲👍 Thanks again guys.

I started my 440 with a 4 bbl. Went great. Swapped the 6 barrel on and tightened a few gas leaks. She is dry and tight. It will still be a bit before the road test comes. But she fires right up and lopes at idle. A 484 purple shaft will do that. I hope my road test for my 70 GTX goes as well as this Cuda’s did. Thanks for the ride Nick.

Great show tonight, Nick. As soon as you started the 70'cuda, I knew what it was. I had a 70'cuda back in 77. Mine was white, and it had a 383 with a 4 speed and the Hurst pistol grip shifter. It had the fog/driving lights, factory ralley wheels, and a posi in the rear. I never did find out the gear ratio, but it would cruise at 65, no problem. It had the factory tachometer, but I don't remember the speedometer, if it was 150 or ???. Anyway, I had a lot of fun with my 'cuda, but my brother took it one day after I had just rebuilt the engine, I didn't know he did, and he hot rodded it to hard, way to hard, it had a terrible rod knock. Boy, was I mad.... I parked it for 6 months and ended up selling it for $500 bucks. A guy from California saw the ad for it and drove to Phoenix, Az, and bought it. It was sad to see it go. Well, that's my Plymouth 'Cuda story, and I'm sticking to it! Ha! Hope you are well and the family too. God bless you and your beautiful family, Nick. Take care.

I was thinking it was a bent pushrod or a pushrod poked through a rocker socket but hoping it wasn't a cam/lifter failure.

I'm still in awe from last week's trouble shoot, with the 383 leaking oil past the rear main seal like it was a sieve. Somebody else rebuilt the engine, and tried 7 times to fix the leak, to no success. It took Nick a little while to find the problems, but it was something that I doubt anybody else watching his blog site would have caught. Two weeks before that, remember the carburetor problem on the left carb on his Chrysler 300J with the cross rams. Nobody would have guessed the problem was a carb jet spring that had too much tension. The guy is the ace's mechanic's ace mechanic. I wish my Jeep had an engine problem just so I could take it to Nick to be solved. And the comment needs to be made... that car has a serioiusly sweet sound. Double thumbs up on that exhaust.

The 1970 Cuda was my favorite. I bought my Roadrunner that same year. It's really irritating when you have rocker noise. I liked the way Nick uses the shimming to get the geometry right. I had 3 2bbl's on my '57 Ford and it was hard to get perfectly right. Unlike the Mopar I had mechanical linkage......I like this set-up much more than mine. I would have thought the ticking issue would be a lifter, not a rocker. Would never have suspected a rocker!
@Godscountry2732
@Godscountry2732 Жыл бұрын
Yes, usually a lifter, but not always . A good tip for street and performance 440 375 -390 hp applications is the use of an aftermarket shaft mounted 8650 chromoly steel roller rocker arms. They weigh about the same as aluminum but are much stronger and of course much more durable for street and performance engines. For 1000 dollars it's good insurance against any failures related to the factory shaft mount rockers.
@dennis-nz5im

That was not the regular tick of a lifter , more clatter and rattling, and that is a rocker or spring, and spring usually doesn’t make noises like that.

WOW NICK! That '70 Cuda is like an airplane,man if it had wings I think it would FLY! These old classic Mopars ran like crazy. It just goes to show it doesn't really matter how much HP you have because at the end of the day,it's TORQUE that wins the race hands down. There's nothing like good old fashioned torque that a big block makes add to that a multiple set of properly tuned carburetters as is the case with engine. I'm sure the owner will once again obliterate many a competition at the stop light drag race in B.C. Nick no one IMO can make a Mopar engine run like you. You're certainly a gifted mechanic and your work definitely proves it. I've worked on a few these cars back in the day like yourself and let me tell you nothing runs like these good old fashioned muscle cars from Ford GM or Mopar.

The 'Cuda really stood out among the dreary white, grey, silver, and black cars of today. I told my wife last week that, if someone compared a photo of the Disneyland parking lot in 1970 with one from today, today's photo would appear to be in black-and-white. Cars -- and life -- used to be fun!

Nick is just a fine wine. I just like to way he just methodically diagnosis a problem with patience and uses the many years of knowledge he ha attained over the years to tackle a problem. He just lives and breathes cars. Just one of the great engine builders . Thank you Nick for sharing your knowledge with us . Also great job to the entire crew at Nicks Shop.
