Nice thanks for this video it was exactly what I needed. I'm just starting to figure out how to do all of the necessary work on my truck cause I don't have my dad to help me out anymore. I have a 1979 f100 custom and ended up here cause I has no clue how to drain the fluid. Was funny to see that the components of my truck look identical to yours despite yours being 9 years older!

I have an 85F150 and even these old bullnoses apparently lack a traditional drain plug… had to scour for a while to find this video.

I picked up a 67 Mustang and went to change the t oil. They said there was a drain plug and I thought I had gone blind and stupid as it just wasn't there. I now know I must not have to original 3 speed. Now, to figure out if the gearing is different. hmmmm

A quick Google search of any numbers on the case might give you some insight.

Ford recommend a 50w engine oil for the 4 speeds back then.

I would but I ended up selling the truck. It's in Finland now believe it or not. One thing you can try, if you're avoiding removing the center section, is sucking the old oil out from the fill hole with one of those pneumatic vacuum bleeders. You won't get all of the oil out but replacing what you can with fresh oil won't hurt!

I just purchased a 1988 Ford f150 custom, and I cannot find the drain plug on the transmission I do see the fill plug like in the video but my concern is what type of transmission fluid should i use
@TrulyMotors

As long as it has a manual transmission, any standard 75w-90 gear oil will work just fine. Or if you already have gear oil laying around as I did, and it's a close enough weight, that would be fine too. Old truck transmissions are pretty stout and aren't too picky about the weight of oil as long as there's enough of it and it's relatively fresh.

Is there a way to check oil level? Or should I remove the plug and if no oil comes out then I should probably refill, is that the right way cause I don’t see a dip stick to check oil level Please help thanks
@TrulyMotors
@TrulyMotors 5 жыл бұрын
Happy to help. If you take the fill plug out and no oil drips out, then you should at least add oil until it begins dripping out. But it would be best just to change the oil all together.

put a zip tie in the fill plug to measure level

Is there any way to check the clutch fluid instead of draining? With a dipstick for example
@TrulyMotors
@TrulyMotors 3 жыл бұрын
I'm assuming you mean the transmission fluid. No clutch fluid on these, it's all mechanical. The only way to check the fluid level is to remove the fill plug and see if fluid come out. If nothing comes out, it needs more fluid.
