Definitely my favorite Mercury ever built, the 1970 429CJ Cyclone Spoiler. That green just looks incredible on that car. Even better that it doesn't have the 4.30 Drag Pack option because you can actually drive it on the highway with the 3.50 rear. That black 69 Fairlane Cobra sleeper behind the Cyclone is super cool too

I'm a Mopar guy but the 70 Cyclone 429 CJ/SCJ is definitely one of my all time favorite Ford products. They are just a really mean looking car between the stance and the gun sight grille. I like the 70 Torino Cobra also but I always liked the 70 Cyclone Spoiler a little bit better. It's a shame that Mercury no longer exists because they were always a bit nicer than a regular Ford.....a bit more upscale. 67-70 Cougar's are also among my all time favorites. I'll take a first gen Cougar over a Mustang any day. My aunt had a 69 Cougar XR-7 that she bought new. I loved that car. Her's had the 351/Automatic if I remember right

Just a great find glad you shared it with us Lou amazing from top to bottom! There's just so many words that I can put to this car that would take forever to write about it. The owner and his wife sure love this car and have a passion and knowledge for this car and the memorabilia is just incredible that they have for this car! Few of us know how much hard work, and the level of dedication that goes into restoring a rare classic like this Cyclone. She's a concours car for sure. Next stop... Pebble Beach. Only 16 made with hideaway headlights. In 1970 'hideaway headlights' mostly meant one hidden and one not. So nobody wanted them - equals only 16 sold. Nothing worse than having to stop in the rain to get your headlight covers to work right.

Can't tell you how many cars we had back then with hideaway headlights that had "issues". They were tied in to the vehicle's vacuum system, which over time, would develop leakage that affected its operation, including opening & closing the hideaway headlight system. We had a couple 68 T-bird's, a 77 T-bird and a Cougar, among others, and every single one of them exhibited some type of issue in that area.

One is in my family. Competition blue, 429 CJ, 4 speed with Hurst T shift handle, trac loc diff with lower gears (I think 4.10). One owner and never crashed. Hasn't been started since around 91' but was perfect with low miles.

And they're still out there. An original green paint four speed SCJ sits in a barn just down the road from me. I first found it sitting outside thirty two years ago. It's moved twice and was sold locally. It's solid but off the road for all that time. Never properly stored, now covered in bird poop. I gave up trying to buy it twelve years ago and bought a new Challenger. Cheaper than buying/restoring that one, and better transportation to boot... (Sorry guys but my pockets are only so deep.)

I had this same car with a SCJ 429/4sp when I was a young man, crashed it 1979 on Elk River bridge in Eureka Ca,after working double shift, fell asleep coming home. Built another one at my body shop decades later but it was a copy made from a GT hardtop with a 351,yes I painted it green too. Sold it to a guy in Canada before I finished it along with another 429/4 sp project car.

Nothing better than debuting a freshly restored ford product at a Ford nationals! No wonder it took 8 years to restore, you can’t find parts for these since they’re not being reproduced. I found a 70 cyclone 429 that’s in rough shape and it appears to have crashed in a ditch since the frame on the drivers side is bent upwards and is rusty by the bottom panels from being parked after the accident. Guy wants $4,000 for it

Gary wood I agree. Any car of any era that had optional hidden headlamps look So much better than the fixed units. When the headlight doors are closed, the grille and front end look clean, crisp and elegant. To watch them whirl up or down as the lights are turned on or off was so kewl to me.

My sister had a 1970 Cyclone Gt with the 351 Cleveland 4V and a 4Speed trans and 373 rear gears! The car was really fast!!! She raced the car twice just to prove a point! Her husband had a 72 Torino GT with a 351 Windsor 4 sd and she blew the doors off his car! She also got conned into racing her friend who had a 1967 ElCamino with a 396 with 325 hp and a 4 sd and she blew the doors off his ass also!!! A guy one day offered he 12 thousand dollars for the car and she sold it and has been sorry ever since!!! She kept it washed and waxed once a week and kept the oil changed once a month even though she only drove it to work and church or to a friend's house! When ever her and my brother in law went out they always went in his car!!!
