Yes, The King was based off of Richard Petty's 43 Plymouth car. Late August Edit: I edited it because people cant figure out that I would have known it was a Plymouth and not a Daytona car by now. Hint hint: it’s been 3 months since I made this comment.

I saw this race in person as a 12 year old, my first superspeedway race. I had to see those Superbirds and Daytonas with their wings. Coolest thing I have ever seen and still to this day my favorite Nascar memory. Sad moment though when my favorite driver Bobby Isaac blew right in front of me with 11 laps to go. I was sitting in the Ford grandstand he was going into turn 1 so I was sitting with the enemy. They loved it, it broke my heart until then I thought I was his good luck, he had won the only other race I saw earlier in the year at Martinsville. Miss those winged Dodge Daytonas and Plymouth Superbirds. They were so cool.

48 races in 1970 8 wins for the Superbird 4 wins for the Daytona 4 wins for the Talladaga 4 wins for the Spoiler II Ford withdrew from racing the year prior. Ford teams were using year old parts and cars and still managed to win a few big fast races. Think about that

This was the first race I ever attended at 10 years old! We went to the infield, and what an experience that was! Go-Go boots and miniskirts were the order of the day for the infield “ladies”, and the infield itself was a mud bog from rains the night before! Pickup trucks with scaffolding erected high in the sky made excellent perches for passed out drunks ! It was great stuff! I also remember seeing Marty Robbins driving in that morning through the infield road! I was hooked! That is until the following spring, when dad took me to Bowman Gray Stadium and I saw the modifieds for the first time! Never looked back after that night, and now in my 60’s, I still prefer a good old Saturday night speedway to the big leagues! Thanks for posting!

I absolutely love this "flat out" style racing and the footage is crystal clear! FoMoCo definitely had a better idea with the Torino Talladega and cyclone spoiler and also had more super speedway wins, but leave it to Chrysler to go "balls out" with the Super bird and Daytona wing cars! I get that the wing cars in total only 14 race wins between 1969 and 1970, Dodge 6 and Plymouth 8. but what most people on this thread are failing to mention is Chrysler still won 38 races in 1970 alone, Richard petty of which won 18 of those races mostly in a regular roadrunner and Isaac won a lot of his championship races in a regular charger! But I still give Chrysler a lot of credit for at least trying to be different by giving the nose and wings to what was essentially a "brick"! even before Ford pulled out in early 1970 they already had plans for a "aero warrior" of their own, the Torino King Cobra and Cyclone Spoiler 2! Also forgot to mention this was Leroy Yarborough's only win of 1970 and last win of his nascar career, he was great behind the wheel and a very underrated driver with a lot of talent! Thanks for sharing this awesome race from what I consider the golden era of racing! (1967 - 1971)

Notice @4:18 with the Bobby Isaac interview: He tells about the race without name dropping a dozen sponsors in the process. For all the years Isaac drove competitively in NASCAR, it's a pity he had few superspeedway wins to his credit. He had competed for nearly eight seasons before getting his first superspeedway win at Texas in 1969 . . . that Daytona win from years earlier was a qualifying race for the 500.

It was fun to watch NASCAR then. There was a good chance of watching the same brand of car, Ford Torino or a Chrysler Super Bird sitting in your driveway as on the track or better yet winning the race. People had that connection that's not there today. That was one of the main reasons I don't watch NASCAR today. Stage racing is the other. I used to score at Charlotte back in the mid seventies in the old scoring stands sitting just inside the fourth turn. It was great to be able to identify with the cars back then.

I watched these races religiously as a kid. It was exciting. Now, I don't care. It is all corporate now, and homogenized. Boredom. Then it was courageous, tough, and gutsy drivers who raced, driving real raw and brutal machines that had the greatest engines---426 cu.in., 429 cu.in., 427 cu.in.---and only four speed manual transmissions. And, let us be frank---they were driven by real men, in those days. How the world has changed for the worse. A salute to all the mechanics and engine builders who built these cars. Old style. It was best!

@@MrMogulvogl BS those Mopar wing cars could go 200mph back then proven fact that set the first ever records going that fast officially timed infact I think it was over 200 if I remember. Hell the new cars aren't even going that fast they get close but I had yet seen any of them hit 200 or over even on the none restrictor plate races . I am sure they handle better for sure being the suspension is much better but as far as being faster top speeds like I have said I haven't seen one yet to top 200 in any of these new race cars on any of the big ovals probably because NASCAR wants to limit how fast they can go or because they have 30 frikin drivers in each race so it's hard at times to even get out & run away from the others because the cars are so closely matched now or the fact that they would be running into each other which it seems NASCAR likes having these exciting wrecks especially if it's a televised race to keep the viewers watching the race that also increases tv view ratings . You have to admit these old racers had big balls to go that fast in these cars being most were built in regular garages with no real racer made & designed parts like now where as back then it was make or build what you can on the budget you have & hope it works or that it doesn't kill you or someone else in the race or stands or the fact that the welding process back then was shabby at best because of using a stick welder to weld those chassis up with no ability to sonic check the welds for cracks or porosity in the welds or metal like they do now with certified chassis or the fact of crappy air they had to breath no power steering crappy brakes crappy seats & the list goes on compared to how easy they have it now .
