1970's Large TONKA Fire Truck - Restoration

Cool Again Restoration

2 жыл бұрын

In this video I restored a Giant Tonka toy from 1970. More specifically , a Tonka Fire Trunk Swivel Aerial Ladder.
I bought this toy some months ago from Ebay from USA with $45, a little too much, considering her condition. I thought will be a nice restoration and challenging at the same time. And so it was.
I started the restoration by disassembling the toy and I encountered some difficulties. The rust was high level. If this toy had not been restored now, it would most likely have been eaten by rust in a maximum of 2 years.
After disassembly, I counted 84 parts that needed restoration. I restored all the parts, except for a bolt and a cap, which I had to build on the lathe.
The restoration process took me one month to do it and creating the restoration video took me another 2 weeks.
I like how the result came out, I hope you like it too. Both , the final product and the entire restoration.
Enjoy the video and take care of yourself ! Cheers, David !

I had this exact same Tonka firetruck when I was four or five years old back in the 70s. No idea what happened to it, but I like to think it's still around and either some kid is playing with it, or it's in somebody's collection. This brought a smile to my face, and made me more than a little nostalgic. Well done.

Now, THAT is a restoration, made with passion and attention to details. You can restore an axe, or vise, or a hefty piece of machine for instance, but ability to bring back to life such a fragile toy i really something that proves one's skills and passion for the craft. I used to have some of these steel Tonka trucks way back in the late 60's, us kids used to play with them outside in the dirt etc, Unfortunately kids aren't known for taking good care of stuff so many of these were left outside in the rain or lost etc. That goes for Redline Hot Wheels too, most of us had them from 68-71.

Idk how I missed this one, but you nailed it buddy. Well done. I miss the old Tonka trucks. Being born in the 80s these bring back some great memories. Very cool. That one piece gave you your run for your money lol.

Oh, wait... I already am! 😋😋 I always love seeing toy tires "stamped" with new white walls. Ya know, if you use square glass marbles to hold down parts being Retrobrightened, you won't get any shadows. Another superb restoration. We had a similar fire engine as children. These days I just pretend the sandblaster is laser cleaning the parts. 😏😏 🔦

Why you didn’t told me before retrobright? It was very challenging to not have shadows there 😅😅 first time trying that method and I don’t know too much about. Nice and useful tip. Thanks my friend 🤗

When I saw the fire truck on the screen.... 😳 I traveled back in time 51 years to the past... Seeing it again made me stop my dinner to see it until the end of the restoration with tears on my face. . I got the same model, it was Christmas, I loved that truck!!! I was trying to find it on Google years ago, but I couldn't find that specific model, and now, seeing it again was fantastic !!! Thank you very much for fixing it and sharing all the awesome details 👏👏👏👏; I am a dentist and I love the restoration process. I was wondering if the base comes with a rope to expand the second staircase... I can't remember very well, maybe it's another model... ?

Thanks and glad you liked it so much. I don’t know about the ladder extension. I asked many subscribers if they had this model and how it’s working but they don’t remember. I suppose it was something to extend the ladder but I don’t see how 🤷‍♂️

I grew up near the Tonka factory in Toronto Canada. I loved Tonka vehicles because they had moving parts and were made from metal. What a joy to see this one restored. Who knew hydrogen peroxide could clear 50 years of age from plastic?!

Its interesting how theres so much and so little detail at the same time. Those tanks in the back are my favorites. The toys now a days are just plastic and will break easily. Never really enjoyed those having been born 07’ and i kept taking the toys my parents had and theyre still with me today 😊
