I was a 12 year old Cardinals fan in 1971. I grew up on a dairy farm in east central Illinois. I listened to virtually every game on KMOX radio with Jack Buck. One night, obviously 8/14, a thunderstorm somewhere between my house and St. Louis prevented me from listening. I found out the next day Gibby had thrown a no hitter. This situation has stuck with me for over 50 years, still annoyed I missed the game. On a whim, I did a search here, and lo and behold, the broadcast was here. Thanks for helping a 63 year old feel like a kid again.

@@joeambrose3260 I don't think I kept the receipt this long. But I'm pretty sure I would have had a triple steakburger with lettuce and tomato and an orange freeze, and my Mom would have had their little brown pot of baked beans. I was 12 years old and my dad took us to Three Rivers for a Pirates game. I was ready to see my heroes in black and gold hit the ball all over the park. What I got was, to 12 year old me, a very boring game. I didn’t understand at the time the significance of what was going on. So there I was. A very reluctant and bored participant in baseball history. When I get time I may listen to this whole game. Thanks for sharing!

I was at Busch Stadium that night. The only problem was the game was in Pittsburgh. I was attending an NFL preseason game. By the 9th inning, just about every transistor radio had turned to the baseball game. You could hear Jack Buck and the KMOX broadcast clearly anywhere in the stadium. When Gibson struck out Stargell to end the game, the crowd erupted as if it happened right in front us.

I was about to start college and was playing miniature golf with buddies very close to River Des Peres Road and Watson, and the game was being broadcast on their speaker. This was a very good hitting Pittsburgh team that won the world series in 1971. The Cards came in second place in their shared division. Joe Torre had his best year batting .363 for St. Louis. Willie Stargell and Roberto Clemente were big with Pittsburgh. This night Bob Gibson was really locked in like the day he struck out 17 Detroit Tigers in a 1968 world series, also an excellent hitting team.

First time I've ever heard Jim Woods, his vocal quality is similar to Charlie Jones, the fact that this was Bob Gibson's no-hitter made it all the more memorable!
@williamtownsend54012 жыл бұрын
chuck, you are so right with the Jones comparison. I never thought of that, but ur right. Jack and Woods didn't get along for some reason. I loved Buck, of course, but if you were a Woods fan, u must've also enjoyed the great Bob Prince.
@timwoods3171 Жыл бұрын
In his autobiography, Jack wrote that Woods disliked, with a passion, the glad-handing, etc., PR which Anheuser-Busch required of its baseball announcers. Woods apparently did all he could to dodge those requirements. Come to think of it, being a longtime radio partner of Bob Prince, Woods had some of that iconoclast DNA in him already, right?

This is so great. Mike Shannon would join Jack the next year in the booth and last another...I don't know.. FIFTY YEARS! 1972-2021. But this was Gibby's night. How did such a dominating pitcher only have this one no-hitter in his brillant career?? Just goes to show you how hard they are to attain.

1971 ? Oh yeah, that's the year we won the World Series. And Willie Stargell should have been MVP. The winning teams slugger gets it every other year. Clemente and Sanguillen took votes away from him. They finished 5th and 8th in the voting.
