We take a detour from "Restoring Christine" to work on our 1971 Cutlass convertible, replacing the transmission with a rebuilt TH350. The torque converter had to be modified to fit, but we got it done!

So imagine doing this in the street with no trans jack. I did with my 71 olds and the TH350. Lifted it up there by hand.

Back when, I remember doing it on driveway strips with dirt in between, losing bolts that gravity decided to take over, having a back full of dirt, transmission fluid, dried grass, and the sweat of aggravation!

Thanks! I built it from a basket of bolts between 2013 & 2016. All frame-off, lots of pieces from various sources. This should give you an idea of where I'll end up with Christine, the 56 Bel Air.

@@RestoringChristine1956 If you have pictures of that project I am sure no one will complain about seeing a collage of those. Your hard work and attention to detail definitely shows already on Christine. Thanks for taking us along on your journey!

I was out there from Wednesday through Sunday and made all the sites, but spent most of my time in Ocean Springs and Pass Christian. We've also done it so many times that I know when to be where and how to drive past the stretches of 90 that resemble a parking lot! Sorry we missed you!

I'll give you a little hint doing the bump with just 1-2 torque converter bolts pits a lot of strain on the fly wheel and the converter for that matter use a big straight head screwdriver and use the teeth of the flywheel to move the motor over less strain on the whole system

When I put it back in the 2nd time, I just horsed it with a gloved hand on the flex plate. I set it so that 2 bolts were lined up and I just had to rotate it to get the 3rd.

I have used a breaker bar on the front of the drive shaft to move it

I really hate using a creeper. Very frustrating tugging on a wrench with nothing but wheels to push against!

Ahhhhh!!! Good one! Let me tell you, it was absolutely all that I could do to not throw a tantrum. My wife stayed with me late to pull it back out. Had I walked away from it with it still in the car, I would never have been able to sleep.

I pulled my transmission last week also by myself i am installing a 700r4 but need to shorten the drive shaft about 3" and installing and bigger oil pan while I'm at it

I had to have a shaft shortened and rebalanced on a 70 Chevelle once. And I had a 700R4 in an S10 Blazer that never was right. There is something about that model that is fickle. Lots of hot rod have them. I never had any luck with it.

You need to get jack stands or high metal ramps. You are taking a chance relying on that hydraulic jack..I wouldn't

The only time it wasn't on jack stands was when I was just gaining a little extra clearance for my arms when I first started. She was on big jackstands when it was lifted.

You could have used some washer's to space out between the flex plate and the converter

Believe me, I was tempted! I could only slide the converter up by 3/32 to 1/8 at most. I just didn't want to risk binding on the pump.

No jackstands were injured in this video for the first half hour. Safety first Bill. Why didnt you use your original converter instead od grinding the other one? just curios.
@RestoringChristine1956
@RestoringChristine1956 Жыл бұрын
I don't know if the converter is the source or if it has shavings in it. For $110, I didn't want to take the chance. And the replacement part # is non-specific to that bolt style. My bet is that they are distributing Chevy converters as if they are the exact same as BPO. This Olds motor is externally balanced and Chevys are not. But I had it all rebalanced when I built it with flat-tops.
