I still remember going with my grandpa in his 57 Chevy Station wagon to the Honda dealer when I was 2, he told me to wait in the car for just a minute, he comes out rolling a Yellow and Silver 1968 Honda Minitrail,. He opened the back and put it in and I remember him talking about it being something that he would use when he went hunting. We got home and he rolled it into his garage on the far side of his boat, next to a Honda 55 that my dad had. It sat there with a blanket over it and while I knew it was there I was too young to ride it. I learned to ride a bicycle whenI was 4 and after riding a bicycle for about 6 months, I came around my grandpa’s garage one morning and he had the minitrail out and had the carburetor off, I watched to see what he was doing and he got the carburetor back on and kicked the starter and it fired right up, he takes off down his long gravel driveway and comes back and says, would you like to try it, my eyes lit up and jumped at the chance, he explained in front of my dad and me that when I put it in gear,I had to push the lever down once and it would go but under no circumstances was I supposed to push the lever down more than once.i take off down the driveway at a snails pace and had a little trouble turning around in the narrow space but headed back and when I got to my grandpa and dad, my grandpa says, it’s yours. I still remember how awesome that was. My grandpa had a couple acres, with tall fir trees and my parents house was adjacent to my grandparents house and property. I started making trails and having a blast for a couple days and the teenage neighbor kids came and looked at it and was watching me ride and asked if they could and I told them that I wasn’t supposed to let anyone else ride it, they understood but they told me that I should at least push the shifter lever down again so I could go faster, I hesitated but went ahead and did it and man it took off, then I hit it again and was really rolling, I tried to keep it in first when my dad and grandpa were around but I think a day later I blew past my grandpa coming around the corner of his house but he just smiled and didn’t say a word. I lived on that minitrail and I can’t even hazard a guess as to how many miles I put on it but I rode for hours each day, even when I got older and was over at my parents house I would pull it out and ride it, that went on till I was in my 30s., my nephews rode it a little, but the coil wire cracked from age and then my entire family and I moved to Texas, I have always intended restore it but haven’t gotten around to it. This was the greatest thing that a kid could ever get, I wouldn’t trade all off the Xboxes or PlayStations in the world for it. I considered myself the luckiest kid in the world.

I had this exact bike brand new. Boy did I thrash that. Broke the frame twice jumping it. But welded it back into a workable bike. Eventually put drop bars and rear pegs and rode it as a cafe racer. Installed a 70cc Top End and carburetor and a straight down pipe made from a schwinn stingray handlebar. The stock muffler bolted right on and provided the back pressure to make the motor sing.

Once again Beautiful restoration. Your shop does wonders. I am the proud owner of a 70' and 71' ct 70's love them and they are bomb proof. I would like to add a z50 and a Q-a 50 to my collection. Best min-bikes ever built.

My father bought me one of these when I was living in Alaska as a kid when I was 5 years old in the late 70s and looked just like that but was red in color. A few years later he upgraded me to a Honda Trail 70 which was the same yellow color. It was a lot of fun to ride and brings back memories, but my son who is 5 now is nowhere near as responsible as I was, so he will need to wait a few more years.

Yeah, my grandpa paid $299 for mine in 1969. I have the receipt somewhere still. I wonder if I could return it? Tell them that there is something wrong with it and it doesn’t run. Having 250,000 miles on it wouldn’t have anything to do with it would it? ;)

I have this same year Z50 collecting dust. I've been waiting to fix for my daughter. (It was restored in the 90's as my first motorcycle but it's been neglected for since 2000....)

Are you saying NOS or NLS parts? I just bought a completely clapped one for $150. The tank is rusted through, which is shitty, so I hope I can find one. I can’t wait to start this journey! Great video as always.

Weird that you would be willing to sell it with a bent rear fender after the frame off and all the hours of detail work put into it. Wouldn't you just out of principle want to replace that rear fender yourself so it goes out the door as an immaculate piece of work? Kind of like a testimony to your own personal perfection and standard of excellence. Then again.....maybe it's just me, and if you're fine with it, then what the hay.

Too bad the paint job doesn't match what Honda did in 1971 . It is supposed to be a 2-tone tank with "Mexican Yellow" over white. I have restored many 1969-1971 Honda Z50's and they all look factory correct. Yours - not so much
