In this video I disassemble the F7 Kawasaki front forks (Hatta). I go through the inspection and straightening the fork tubes, and seal and dust cover selection.

Hey that's great, hope you are able to get some tips from these videos. I am not a Kawasaki guru, but most of it is just generally the same as the other bikes I have been working on. Its really just about having fun anyway. Thanks for stopping by the channel.

Best video I've seen on removing stuck on seals. Seen many tubes damaged with ordinary seal pullers, way too much heat or brute force. Fascinating way to straighten tubes. Too little pressure and no results. Too much and you have a pretzel. Very creative!

Excellent content and presentation! Especially the tube straightening. Would love to see your process for evaluating triple clamps and straightening steering stems. Thank you.

Hey Jason, triple clamps are just an inspection for damage, as is the steering stems, I have only had to replace one, the bike had been in a bad wreck and the steering stop was broken off, just got a used one to replace. Other than that, some stripped threads that were fixed with a heli coil.

Excellent video as usual Dale. Great tutorial on the fork seal removal. I have used All Balls Racing products on my bigger bikes when I had them and they seem to be decent stuff. Best wishes, Dean.

Thanks Dean, sometimes the best way is the old way. Nothing fancy here, just results without damage. Yes, I use a lot of their products. It's just that they don't list a lot of their parts by application. Just have to measure it up and see what they have.

Hey thanks Collin, I really enjoy making these and my hope is that folks can find some tips and help from them. If nothing else just some entertainment. No, I really don't mess with the newer machines. I guess they just don't appeal to me, even though they are superior in every way they are just not my thing. The old bikes I grew up with are the ones that interest me, I remember working in the motorcycle shop as a young man and watching all the after-hours experimenting and wrenching and just wanted to be a part of that, but it was mostly for the older guys at the time. So, a lot of what I do is stuff I remember watching back then and I still have most of my old magazines from the day and lots of the modifications that I do, such as the Yamaha 125 MX build came from the pages of those magazines. Guess I just figure water cooled belongs to cars and trucks, not bikes. Thanks for hanging out in the shop with me.

I just picked up a Wards Riverside 250 that someone installed a set of those Hatta forks on. The tubes are so rusted I might not be able to get them out of the triple clamps. We shall see.

Hey Bud, I remember the Riverside 250, think those were Italian made either Apria or Benelli. Strange to see Hatta's on it though. Man, that rust is just nuts to deal with. Good luck my friend.

Dale have you ever used screws into the seal and a visegrip slide hammer to pull them straight out?
@montana2strokeracer
@montana2strokeracer Жыл бұрын
Hey Matt, yes, I do use that procedure for engine seals, but these old seals just don't have metal thick enough to get the screw to hold, and to add to it the corrosion just welds these fifty-year-old seals in place. That metal band really holds tight. The new seals are so much easier to remove. The procedure you talk about works like a champ on most of the engine seals for sure.

Hey Dale, fellow Montanan here - Love the videos! I just bought a 1974 f7 175, all in parts. This is my first dirt bike so I've been watching all of your videos to familiarize myself with the parts. I am currently stripping down one of the forks to clean and film them with oil (one of them had already been broken down, except for the damping rod). In the one that had already been broken down, the damping rod is completely stuck. The end aluminum piece seems forged to the rod, and the subsequent concave piece that the snap ring goes over is also stuck. I let it sit in rust remover for a while but that didn't work, and the guy I bought it from said to try to use a torch to kind of melt it down. Do you have any recommendations for this? If I can't get it out will I need to get a new fork or do you think I'll be okay leaving it in? Also, do you clean the inside of the forks, and if so what do you use?
@montana2strokeracer
@montana2strokeracer 10 ай бұрын
Hey Grant, sounds like you have a nice project there. I hope you are able to glean some needed info from these videos. I don't think you want to melt anything here. But you could try some heat with a propane torch to see if you can free the part. Just remember aluminum melts at a pretty low temp. If it starts turning shiny, it's too late. You could probably just leave it as is, if you can't remove it. Just clean it the best you can. Yes, I clean the inside with a small, long brush and soap and water, or if really hard to remove try some mineral spirits. I will be getting back to the F7 build probably this winter. If you find yourself in Great Falls, let me know we could visit a bit. Reach me at dsweger@bresnan.net. Thanks for hanging out in the shop with me. Also, for more Kawasaki videos, check out Kevin Bergeron on KZfaq.

Hey Dale, I had been wondering if the F-7 forks could be used on a KE but didn't know if the dimensions where the same. So they are 30mm . Thanks for the video.

What about a slide hammer to remove the seals. And maybe light heat on the aluminum housing?
@montana2strokeracer
@montana2strokeracer Жыл бұрын
Hi there, there is not enough metal to get a screw to hold for removing that way, I wish there was, I use that procedure for all engine seals. The manufacture used the steel band on their seals and coupled with the seal being in there for 50 years with the corrosion and such.... they are just tough to remove. Heat will certainly help, but with aluminum you really have to be careful. I just prefer this method although it is slow. I'm not in any hurry. Thanks for hanging out in the shop with me.
