Montreal rallied to win the Stanley Cup in what was Jean Beliveau's last game. The Blackhawks narrowly missed taking a 3-0 lead and then allowed 3 unanswered goals to lose 3-2. The Blackhawks ended a 49-year dry spell when they won the Cup in 2010.

Henri Richard was truly amazing in this series...he was on fire every time he stepped on the ice. The Hawks were also a great team. Look at the lineup. Hull, Mikita etc. In the end it was only fitting that Jean Beliveau went out as a champion in his last game.

+john list Henri was always a fine player in his own right; but yes, he did bring the win to the Habs on this Tues. night in Chicago, 5/18/71.Interesting, too, is that Bobby Hull's brother, Dennis, got a goal for Chicago in this deciding game. Both Dennis and Henri did sort of "live in their brother's shadow". Well, so did Dominic DiMaggio lived in the shadow of his more famous brother, Joe. It happens.. sometimes.

This was absolute agony, which made the Bears infamous 5 game skid later that same year even more agonizing.

+VolumedMusicMan Why didn't the Montreal organization give the GM job to Scotty Bowman, after Sam Pollock retired? Scotty left... to continue to win, in both Pittsburgh and Detroit. He was the best coach ever!

Bobby Hull said that it was Billy Reay who cost the Hawks the Stanley Cup by sitting out Mikita and Hull for the better part of the game after the 2-0 lead by the Hawks.

Brad, I didn't know you were already in Chicago in 1971!

duckman531 Yep. My first job in Chicago was at WGN Radio/TV (1966-1968) writing and producing news and sports. The only on-air people who wrote their own copy were Gary Park and Jim Ruddle. I joined WBBM in 1968 on the day it became Newsradio 78, Chicago's first all-news station. Started in news and as a writer and producer. A year later, I joined Brent Musberger in the sports department. Shortly thereafter, we became Musberger-Palmer sports. I anchored morning drive and then went into the field covering games. Brent anchored the afternoons while also anchoring for WBBM-TV downstairs. When Brent joined CBS in NY in 1974, I became a one-man band. Rich King, who was the assistant news director, helped me with some of the reporting and eventually joined me, along with Dave Eanet, who started as an intern. I moved to WLS-TV IN 1985. Rich succeeded me as sports director, and Dave succeeded him. Both moved on to WGN where they remain today. What a great crew we had. For a time, we had the ONLY sports talk show in Chicago. It was built around having great guests and attracted a big audience. But then the bosses decided to go back to all-news during that 6:30-8 time slot. Two or three other stations quickly filled the void.

The Chicago coach, Billy R., blew this "what-should-have-been" a Blackhawk Stanley Cup, by having Magnuson out there, early in the 3rd period. Maggie couldn't skate for beans----I don't know how he was even in the league! The Chicago coach also kept Bobby and Dennis Hull on the bench, playing 'defensive' players, trying to hold onto a slim lead: downright stupid. He had T. Esposito in goal----NOT Glenn Hall, who was much more consistent. It sure hurts when management messes it up for the players.

PackardJerry Huh? Glenn Hall didn't play with the Hawks after the 66-67 season. He played with the St. Louis Blues and retired after the 70-71 season. Agree with you about Reay's coaching though. On the other hand, the Hawks were unlucky - Hull hits the crossbar and Lemaire comes up the ice and scores from center ice...

+northernale yeah but Glenn almost stoned the C's in the 1968 Finals while playing for the Blues

+northernale I was simply trying to say.. that Tony E. was no Glenn Hall.. or any other great goaltender. Chicago's backup goalie, at the time, Gerry DesJardins, was unable to play because of a broken arm.So, maybe Tony E. was tired. Recall that the Habs defended their slim 3 - 2 lead from early in the 3rd period.. all the way to the end. It must have been about 17 minutes worth. Team defense is what wins.

Don't forget this was the "Year of the Bruins" when Orr, Esposito & Cashman set scoring records and the Bruins registered over 100 points in the standings...Sorry NOT TO BE! Beliveau & Ferguson last season, Dryden rookie season...Need I say more? HABS RULE!!! Or should I say HABS RULED...
@34Packardphaeton
@34Packardphaeton 7 жыл бұрын
+Mark Malone The Bruins, though defending S C champs, were a LITTLE over-rated.... and entered the '71 playoffs "flat"... maybe a bit tired. They were not prepared, especially psychologically, to win the cup again. They tried to rely on talent alone.... and it wasn't enough for a team that "wanted it more".
