What I like about it is that is a really lovely restomod. The 2002 has beautiful proportions. Tony’s looks like it handles brilliantly and gets its power onto the road without aimless wheel spinning. It doesn’t have the dreaded US spec bumpers of the later version that stick out absurdly front and back - thank goodness and, the original chrome details have been kept. In a way it’s actually an E30 dressed as a 2002 but that gives it charisma, tied to reliability and crazy-cool performance. A brilliant car.

Had a 1973 yellow 2002 with black interior; "The Bumblebee". Rebuilt the motor, adding an additional 100 hp; 200 hp total. Sport Bilstein shocks, Eibach springs, 2 2 barrel Weber carbs, Kleber tires, Stahl header, Ansa tips, Blaupunkt stereo & a black Momo steering wheel. Still to this day, it's one of the best handling cars I've ever driven; perfectly balanced. Taking an off ramp at 60-70 mph was never a problem! Slid PERFECTLY. Maintenance? Sometimes like a MG in the rain; it nickeled & dimed me to death! Loved the car, hated the bills. It wouldn't leave me alone! SOLD.

I remember me too. I come from a BMW family and father and mother works in Munich Milbertshofen. When i was a youngster, i had a BMW 2002 Coupe with 100 PS, 2002 ti 120 PS and a 2002 tii with Kugelfischer injection with 130 PS. It was a lot of fun to drive in the dolomites and the hills in bavaria. Now is a BMW X3 35D with 313 PS my own and i life for BMW. My father had the number 43 at the new beginning 1946 in Munich. Sorry my English is not so good, i am Bavarian in Germany and thats different.

SurferHermann... You have nothing to feel bad about. Meine deutche died a long time ago! I went to the American High School in Ludwigsburg from 1961 to 1965, about 10 kilometers from Stuttgart. There have been quite in list of BMWs in the family since 1969 but my current car is a 330xi, 5-speed manual. My last E39 5-series got crunched by a brain-dead college kid about 7 years ago and this was the replacement. I wouldn't tell him about it, but I like this car far better than the one he ran into! The 5-speed manual, all-wheel drive and the 3 liter six make for a very responsive little car. It has 189,000 miles on it now and I'll probably keep driving it for another 189K!! I much prefer the simpler car compared to all the electronics they pile into the cars now. As they get older, the problems will be overwhelming. Guten Tag und Merry Christmas!! ;^)

What a beautiful sleeper. I'm impressed that the builder resisted fender flares and recaro seats.

Good observations BUT although he abstained from the vulgar fender flares and recaro seats he spoiled it just a little with those red rimmed low rider chrome tires . He just could not escape his Yankee DNA! Everything was in good taste tile the red flared tires were put on. Well, at least he did not run a thick line over the roof and the bonnets.

I have a 1976 2002 with an automatic trans and standard power plant, real slow, but that is how I move, you can spend a lot and this guy did, simply beautiful. These care are like a love/hate relationship, but the pride in ownership is a great reward, I have had Ferrari owners drive past me, of course, and give the thumbs up! It cracks me up.

I love the host more excited than the owner....! How much things cost , has always been a very "bad question" and that hasnt changed since "the car guy" was invented. Its a labor of love...the money comes out of your pocket over time.. Your not paying labor , your figuring it out as you go along. Each car has its on challenges even the same model car. How much does or would it cost. I feel bad for people that dont have the time to build a car or a motorcycle. They miss out on a major part of building. It is enjoyable and relaxing as fishing. Its rewarding and instant gratification. You tube has completely helped the "car guy" youtube has inspired more builds and helped create new car guys everyday. It does feel like an uncrackable code , when ever you ask How Much. A home builder meanders thru a build.....he has receipts in a box , bag or in a draw.....or multiples of each. If you have a "A shop " build it Sometimes its their first build ( they dont know) If they are a specialiat of this car they have past builds to give you an Idea. So the cost is "Always elusive" If you go to a car show....the owner is going to say " more than I want to tell you" Or if his wife is around " you will never get him to say!" If you learn your self by researching forums and youtube videos. You just rack up sweat equity and gain an education. If you pay some one that has built lots of cars . You ,will at least, Will get a finished car. Can not ,have someone, build you your dream car ,that doesnt have at least three fully built cars behind him. Cause it takes "lots of time" There have been "lots" of unfinished cars. I have seen alot of first attempts , By owners that knew nothing about cars, build and learn on one car. Then they build another and another.....they learned how to learn. How much does it cost...???? To a car guy in his garage building his car. Money only enters the picture when he has to adjust his lifestyle to afford his next brainstorm.....to CREATE..... Body work and paint is more expensive than most people think. Thats why the Rat Rod look became popular. The time and money saved is a big chunk of any build.A bigger chunk then the non automotive person can understand. Known parts are easier to add up. Its the miscellaneous stuff that adds up in addition to the known parts. Things like wire, nuts bolts , screws, rivets,clamps, lubricants, hoses, brake lines, fuel lines , more clamps, clips, adhesives, and tools you will buy lots of tools. Interiior, another whole subject on its own. Engine transmission drive shaft , rear end, suspension ??? Not many , if any car enthusiasts ,builds a car , by cost analysis! The car would never get" started". An enthusiasts car gets built from an Idea.....some how the money comes , the parts come , It comes together...some how from sheer desire and will. If you want it ,so bad you can see it finished, you can , just see it, finished so clearly it gets you completely excited. That is when you start ....hold that vision and live it ,till the car is sitting in front of you , just the way you imagined it. And when some one asks you " how much does it cost?" Your eyes glaze over, a smile ....comes to your face...and you say..." I realy dont know"
@AutotopiaLA

Great comment!! I always ask for the viewers that don’t have a clue of what it takes to build. Even a simple build let alone some of the radical stuff we show here. And I’m just an enthusiast. I don’t enjoy wrenching at all. Never got the relaxing part of it. My brain just doesn’t go in that direction so I’m always curious of money but also time, energy and creativity involved.

@@AutotopiaLA the "problem with the car culture" is THERE IS NO PLACE TO FIND THE ANSWER. And the old " if you have to ask you cant afford it" Doesnt ring true, because cars ,drive out of back home garages, everyday that Kick Ass in originality and performance. So , because the car magazines dont tell you! The TV car channels never tell you. Where is one to know. Where is one to find out? No place.... There is no place. Just paying somebody to make your dream car a reality is VERY expensive. The only way a guy that has no interest at all in building his own car......is to buy something ready built ...that comes close.

Even with the stock 90bhp that car could move as it was so light. 450 BHP and 450 pound feet of torque would be incredible. I moved from Indiana to California in 1976. In Indiana where I grew up the only thing I ever saw that was BMW and I was young at the time was a motorcycle, didn't know they made cars. I was in Van Nuys one afternoon and I saw this body styled type vehicle coming up from behind pretty fast and I though that is show off, looked like a miniature Edsel in my rear view mirror. I was in my 1966 Nova 283 four barrel three speed and I opened it up, the little mother stayed behind the Nova the whole time. Mind you this is on the city streets of Van Nuys California, 1976 and I was doing just a little over 90mph and looking back I was glad nobody pulled out in front of me at an intersection. The Nova was light and fun.

My all-time favorite car was my '66 2002. Tachometer?? Naaah. I was born with two of those. Mods? An Alpine stereo and a pair of Gabriel air shocks (to keep the weight of my tools from bottoming out the rear suspension). It was a sleeper alright. After a night of indulgence, I'd tilt those low-back buckets all the way back and - - sleep. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Shawn. PS: I don't recall ever smoking the tires. That doesn't sound ANYTHING like my old '69 2002!! My first car was a '67 1600 & my 2nd was a '69 2002 that my parents bought new. The fun part about the 1600 was that in 67-69, very few people in the US had any idea what a BMW was. It couldn't accelerate fast enough to talk about but I embarrassed a bunch of pretty fast muscle cars of that era due to it's excellent handling. The 2002 was appreciably quicker but still nothing to brag about... it was all in the handling. I lost count of how many times an AMX or a Chevelle 396 or a Camaro SS would catch up after several miles on some 2 lane blacktop and demand to know just what the hell that thing had in it??? It would do about 108 flat out but I didn't have to get on the brake often or very hard and just ran off and left much more powerful cars behind in the crooked stuff. I had to pop the hood every time and let them count the plug wires when I told them, "It's a little 4-banger with 96 cubic inches, 96 hp, and a 1 barrel!" ;^)

Yup. I had a '68 1600 in '77, then a '73 2002 in '80. They were the first cars I owned that would not smoke tires . . . not because they were slow, but because they hooked up so well! Even in this video, with 430 hp, notice how it squats on its haunches and just launches. I remember that squat with just 100 or so hp! What great cars they were. Thanks for the trip down memory lane.

@@MrGaryGG48 I took my '73 2002 on some back roads in Princeton to Rocky Hill one day in '81, and wound up behind a little drop top. He hit it in the corners and so I stayed glued to his tail for a few miles, until we came out at Rte 206. At a stop sign, with me behind him, this older guy (about 40) gets out and walks back to my car. I was all of 23, and thought he was upset for me riding his *ss. Nope, he was gobsmacked, this punk kid in an upright sedan that he could not shake . . . in his Lotus Elan haha!

Great looking car..... A bit more powerful that the one I had and restored way back in "92. It sounded a bit odd describing it as a two thousand and two.... I and many others are used to it being called.. A two double O two,

absolutely love 2002s and that m20 goes so well in there. I rebuilt the m20 b25 once, great engine and it's age related enough to look right in the 2002, not too modern looking. A newer b58 would be insane in there with some mods.

Stanced out is still sleeper, most of them are style over performance. This car has both style and performance. BTW this isn't a threat to just M-cars , muscle cars could be terrorised by this also.
@alycestapleton
@alycestapleton 6 жыл бұрын
MrStacy1974 stanched is for fuckwit , and does nothing for performance, not too mention tyre wear . . And no real sleeper has stanched because you want all the tyre contact area available, your clueless. I’ve owned and still have a bmw e30 m54 , even had another e30 with euro e36 m3 engine which is completely different to the USA spec engine even car

Gaz Girl No need for the attitude or personal insults.. . "stanced" means different things to different people. This car can be called stanced,it just doesn't have the ridiculous camber or super low ride height associated with the "stanced scene". Thanks for showing your maturity level.
