AMCS is proud to announce the sale of this very special unrestored Ford Works prepared 1972 Ford XA Falcon GTHO Phase IV Prototype factory race car. Several months ago AMCS was approached by a discreet but determined collector and asked to obtain what is considered to be one of the most prized motor cars ever made in Australia. AMCS entered into discussions with the owner of this factory racer for the last 20 years, Mr Paul Carthew of Sydney. AMCS is proud to announce a deal was reached, with the car changing hands for just under $2m and will remain in Sydney, Australia.
Given the significance of this car and knowing the passion of the thousands of enthusiasts who follow AMCS whether red or blue blood running through their veins, we are excited to share this news and the story and photos presented here.
Developed under the direction of Ford racing supremo Howard Marsden and supervision of John Wynne at Lot 6 Mahoney's Road, Thomastown, the secret location of Ford's Special Vehicles Unit in June of 1972, this car was one of three sedans hand built by Ford part way through '72 for the endurance races and ultimately Bathurst.
Still bathing in the glory of Alan Moffat's works team victories at Bathurst in '70 and '71, these works cars were to leave no stone unturned to achieve victory in '72 and the full might of the factory and key race team personnel was put behind this effort. Then, out of the blue a June '72 motoring article made its way on to the front page of the Sun Herald newspaper with the now infamous headline that Ford, Holden and Chrysler would soon be placing 160mph Supercars on the street. The "bullets on wheels" outcry was unleashed, politicians fumbled for answers, corporate executives ran for cover halting development immediately, and the rest is mired in history, legend and folklore of what might have been.
It was a shattering moment for all three manufacturers. If they put their next Bathurst supercars on the road they could expect to be shouted down as irresponsible, a danger to society and see no more sales of any cars to the Australian Government. A quick solution needed to be found. So without a new race machine as Sandown and Bathurst approached Ford turned to the well used and already superseded '71 XY GTHO Phase 3s for their bid to win at Bathurst in 1972, albeit with the addition of 15" Bathurst Globe alloy wheels and a further year of track development.
It wasn't until 1973 that Ford rolled out the new XA Falcon GT 2 Door Hardtop, and under new CAMS rules adopted this for their own race team campaign and shared with other loyal Ford teams leading to impressive victories in both the '73 and '74 Bathurst races. So the three special hand built '72 GTHO Phase 4 prototype sedans were never given a chance to strut their stuff on a race track in anger.
All three cars were in various stages of completion when the pin was suddenly pulled on their development and over time went on to lead very different lives. XA-1 is now a prominent showpiece in the Bowden Collection, XA-2 known as the rally car was ultimately destroyed in an accident, and this gem you see here, XA-3 remains in time-warp unrestored condition - perhaps the most amazing Day One Australian muscle car in existence.
When the program was axed XA-3 chassis no. JG33MC78489K was sent to Ford Dealer Max McLeod of Rockdale, Sydney, well known sponsor of John Goss at the time. Having sat in a corner for a period it received some final works supervised by Goss, and then moved on to the showroom floor, roll cage and all. It's hard to imagine a car such as this finding its way onto a regular dealer showroom floor, unique seam welded body, race team Brambles Red in colour, intrusive roll cage, QC spec race motor - all still as per Lot 6 workshop condition, but registered and ready to driveaway with its regular owners manual and log book tucked in the glove box.
Finally sold in 1973 the car passed through the careful hands of only a few astute collectors over the years. Today this time capsule race ready road car has covered a mere 4,698 miles from new and remains a stunning, living tribute to the efforts of Ford Lot 6.
It is the only unrestored Phase 4 remaining and is an incredible time-warp example of originality from the era. Original paint, original interior, it even wears its original factory tyres on original Bathurst Globe wheels.
The car has been treated to a major mechanical service and some expert detail work to the engine bay and undercarriage by AMCS before final delivery to the new owner. Seen here with and without removable metallic decals replicating how it most likely would have appeared at Bathurst in October of 1972 - What A Car! Enjoy the Ride!

I had an XA Fairmont that I upgraded to full GT specs. Engine, gearbox, diff, brakes, suspension, the works. Man I miss that beast. Wish I never sold it. Ah, the idiocy of youth! So many things from my younger years that I foolishly sold off, only to realise too late in my old fart days that what I had can never be replaced.😠😭

Absolutely gorgeous, if only that God Damn newspaper article wasn't published. XA GT HO Phase IV LJ XU2 308 VH E55 4 speed possibly 6 pack. If I could jump in to a time machine stopping this newspaper article would be in my top 3 things to change about history. Would of been awesome a XA GT HO Phase 4 Hardtop the ultimate Aussie Muscle Car after the VH E55. Love them all but bleed Mopar. Cheers Louis 👍

This car is NOT a phase 4 at all. It is a factory built XA GT Falcon being developed into a race car. The only compliance plated XA Falcon Phase 4 GTHO is the Calypso Green car purchased from Jack Brabham Ford by John Hemphill.

Yep it is. This is the pre production factory race car. Hence the dots after GT. It’s every bit as real as the other phase 4’s. It’s certainly not an rpo83, which is the only other option. There was no “race” xa GT’s this early in the model because everyone knew the HO was on the way, and when it wasn’t built everyone just went back to racing the XY. Besides, Ford had a terrible habit of marking the actual model designation all sorts of crazy things, look into the post production xy utes and see some of the crazy codes and model names attached to them.

@@nathan2483 Sorry mate, I don't agree with you. The XA Falcon was released in March 1972 and quite a number had been ordered and sold since March 1972 not to mention pre-release production cars for dealer stock prior to XA release. These 3 Brambles Red GTs were not Pre-Production vehicles at all, they were standard build June 1972 XA GT Sedans in Brambles Red (as per their compliance plate). After rolling off the assembly line they were sent over to Lot 6 Mahoneys Road Thomastown to have their race engines, body strengthening, seam welding carried out and roll cages etc fitted. These 3 cars were the cars Ford was to have ran at Bathurst in 1972 until Evan Green wrote the Supercar Scare Story in The Sun Herald on 25th June 1972. The Supercar Scare story stopped completion of these 3 XA Race Cars as a result of government pressure to stop 160 MPH Supercars getting in the hands of the general public. This is why Ford HAD TO continue on with the XY Race Cars as the XA Race Cars had been stopped. However, before Green's Story was printed, the one and only Calypso Green XA GTHO Phase 4 Sedan (As per its compliance plate) was built and sent to its ordering dealer, Jack Brabham Ford in June 1972. The Calypso Green Phase 4 Sedan was kept undercover at Brabham's until the hype died down and was quietly sold in March 1973 to John Hemphill (The First Registered Owner). After Green's Story, all the HO specific parts found their way onto other Ford V8 cars of the day. Some were the RPO83 cars like you said and other odd bits and pieces found their way onto odd cars here and there (Fairlanes etc included) just to get rid of them all.

@@danielbrown4133 Dan, not a standard build XA GT at all. Preferential assembly, body strengthening, welds, etc all done on the line. They knew what they were doing. Then finish painted and final assembly before the trip to Lot 6. Well documented. We have been under and over this car, known its provenance for years, it is amazing and far from a standard car. Thanks for your interest. AMCS.

@@australianmusclecarsales9401 Oh ok, seam welding etc done on the assembly line, I learned something today and thank you for that. I wouldn't have thought they'd had capacity to do it in the factory. Old mate Nathan was saying it was a pre-production car which, I'm sure you will agree it is not. It was also not a factory Phase 4 as evidenced by its Compliance Plate which shows engine code T not H. The car is a factory built GT race body with standard XA GT engine which is later removed to have a race engine etc over at Lot 6. It is what it is.

@ Fernando Chaves : All M code US baseed 351C 4Vs used on the 72 and 73 XA's were slower than the 70-71 cars, so 15.8 seconds for standing 1/4 mile was common. The RPO83's with more Phase IV parts were down to 15.2 seconds. The 70-71 Phase I, I I, and III's were 15.5 to 14.5 second cars, with a 13.9 recorded from a 3.90 geared wide ratio Phase III in 1972. The Phase IV was most likely a 13.9 second car with a 153 mph top speed because it had a 6150 rpm Rev limiter. The net flywheel hp readings were 240 hp for the stock M code, but the Phase II was 340 hp, the Phase III 350 hp, and the Phase IV, 380 hp net. The RPO 83 was about 275 hp net if it had headers, 780 cfm Holley and the GT spec cam. Sources. Mick Webb (1988 Street Machine) and Sir John Wright (1982-83 Wheels "Thundering GT's")

I was told the cars in the picture where mule test cars for the planned running gear as coupe shell's where not available at the time. Doesn't lessen the value of any of those that remain.
