Hi thank you for explaining the lower grill in coupes . however, the bonnet in European 280se 1969 is higher and the console is higher set with the air condition panel. My dad was a 280se collector for 25 years. I grew up with the 3.5 coupes and European coupes and convertible coupes.

i thought i could keep mine forever - it looked just like this one - but consumed oil due to defective valve seal at the rate of a pint for each full gas tank and the body panels rusted through quite fast in chicago streets. it was also a 4.5 liter v8 with only 190 horsepower.

In early 1980 I had such a merc - it had to work hard-with horse trailer 4-5 days a week-never ever let me down - I sold it with 341.000 miles on the dash to my ferrier, who used it another 5 years-also for trailer work.never forget when he came to me and said:the motor is gone now-listen to it..." (it ran on only 5 cyl......) Came out he didnt change the spark plugs in 60.000miles....-new plugs and she purred again....He brought her to the junk yard with a little over 485.000 miles because she had more rust than he could fix......The guy from the yard said:wow-she runs fine-I get the engine out.................imagine.......half a million miles.......try that with todays cars.....

Hi thank you for the lower grill explaination . i greatly appreciate it. However, European coupes 3.5, and non 3.5 coupes have a higher bonnet. Thus, mainly my dad has European 280se coupes . He has only one 1970 California 280se coupe where the bonnet is lower. My dad collected 280se coupes for 25 yrs.

These cars came with single stage paint. you have to scrape the paint off down to the metal in order to get a decent new paint.

280se the greatest mercedes ever!! I grew up with me and super safe car i recommend highly 1970 280 se 3.5 and European model 280se bonnet are higher. California 280se little lower bonnet and console. Is this a American or European model. This is a 1972, wood should be replaced and stitching of upholstery. Brown great color, thank you

Haha Factory choke? Are you kidding me? This is an electronically fuel injected V-8, (D-Jetronic) and the mixture is automatically enrichened when the coolant temperature sensor, intake air temperature sensor, and thermo-time switch for the cold start valve all three sense the engine being cold. As the engine warms up, the mixture automatically leans out. The last time Mercedes had a car with a manual choke was in the early 1960's. (excluding the enrichment device on a 600). The knob this seemingly clueless fella refers to as the "choke" is actually the switch for the heated rear window.

+Cereal Marshmallows : they then blamed it on defective oil valve seals which the company never bothered to fix. it was my first mercedes which i thought i will then keep for 20 years. i was giddy first time driving it. i could not believe it at first. i thought it was so beautiful and will last forever - until the oil consumption showed an empty dipstick after a few thousand miles suddenly and the body panels started to rust. it was a terrible let down but then all cars in the seventies and eighties had the same rusting tendencies. that was the time when one could see three rustproofing firms like Ziebart in one city block. i have an nsx now - for almost 24 years - no rust.

72 is when the U.S. epa started gangraping engines. By then this had the 4.5 low comp and low hp v8. It was a major dog and used tones of gas. I had two of them. Both 450SLCs. The 450 was the engine they forced for the American market, that's why it was so dogish. The euro models were fantastic! Hi compression and horse power. Even manual transmissions! The euro 280se would have a 2.8-6, 3.5-v8, or the monster 6.9-v8! Even the 2.8 would kill the 4.5 They are beautiful, but castrated. Look for a euro. They're around, they are a whole different animal!
