This wicked Plymouth turns heads, but Nick needs to get it out of the shop and make some room. First, he will have to battle a finicky carburetor and give the car a beating to make sure it's ready for the streets.

A bit confused, you loosen the 3 screws on the plastic choke cap and turn it to adjust the choke and the idle screw is on the other side by the linkage.I think Nick needs to switch to decaf.

A friend of mine had a 71 roadrunner back in the 80s. It had a 440/4 speed, torker 2 , Holley, mini tubbed. N/50 15 M/T tires, .509 cam. It was the fastest car in town ! Cheers Nick ! This brought back memories.

@@UKESRfertilizer You gotta have the harley davidson mind set. It's the idle, the lope of the engine and how it feels more than beating someone in a race just to push it too hard and always rebuilding and replacing. These old muscle cars have a spirit and feel to them that hard to describe.

On Holley vacuum secondary carbs (and maybe double pumpers without 4 corner idle screws) there is a screw that you can only get to from beneath to crack open the secondaries to act like a vacuum leak that raises the idle for a cam that has a lot of overlap at idle so that you don't have to open the mains so far to get it to idle and have tipped the throttle and exposed the transition slot which then decreases the signal to the idle circuit. I believe that is what Nick was adjusting, not the fast idle screw.

Seeing that camera footage on the burnout reminds me of a trick we used to use back then to get that old Hotchkiss rear suspension to handle like a ladder bar setup with a stiff sway bar on it. Bolt two overload spring stops to the front half of the leaf springs making them as stiff as ladder bars and turning the rear axle into the sway bar. Of course you can just use two half leafs and get some independent travel. Depends on how you want it to perform: heavy for drag only, lighter for street handling.

I hung around a lot of car guys back in the early 80s. My neighbor always would trade around different muscle cars. He had some sweet cars. One was a 68 road runner standard with a 440. After about a week he traded off. We asked him why said he was afraid he was going kill himself. We all laughed about it about a few days later the dude he traded his GTO wrapped that Road Runner around a telephone pole. Lucky he wasn’t killed. Ah the power of the Mopar

The fast idle speed screw is a bastard to get to on a Holley carb. However, I was able to get to it without taking the carburetor off the engine (1967 Chrysler New Yorker 440). This is how I did it: Remove the 3 screws that hold the electric choke to the carburetor body; pull it out of the way, then you have all the room you need to get to the screw. Usually a half turn up or down (depending on whether you want to raise or lower the fast idle RPM) using a small wrench does the trick.

Hay Nick'sGarage I bet doing that burnout really set your mind at ease from having to fix that damn idle screw.

JNaasty. That fast idle screw has no hex head on it, and faces downward, impossible to adjust unless you remove carb. Nice car, had many little issues with the ignition also. Anyways, with all that done, and no fender covers, it all went well.
