The Fountain Valley massacre was a mass shooting that occurred on the afternoon of 6 September 1972 at the Fountain Valley Golf Course in St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands.
The shooting left eight employees and tourists dead. Another eight were either shot at or wounded.
The perpetrators were five Virgin Islanders whom authorities initially believed to have committed the execution-style shooting in the course of a robbery gone bad. However, in court, the defense, led by civil rights activists William Kunstler and Chauncey Eskridge, argued in part that the accused were politically motivated victims of systematic race-based civil rights deprivation; all of the defendants were Afro-Caribbean, while seven of the eight victims were white. Two of the accused, Rafael Joseph and Warren Ballentine, explained that they had only planned on committing a robbery, but that things got out of hand because one of the co-defendants, Ishmael LaBeet, was adamant that they also make "a political statement" because "he was angry about foreigners coming in to take our money and leaving us with nothing." According to Joseph, LaBeet, during the commission of the robbery, suddenly began shooting people while yelling epithets like, "I hate you white motherfuckers!"
LaBeet, who escaped from custody and fled to Cuba in 1984, has denied this version of events, as well as any involvement at all in the shooting.
All five men were convicted after a trial in federal court of multiple charges of murder, assault, and robbery, in violation of Virgin Islands law. Each was sentenced to eight consecutive life sentences.
The public's perception of a racially tinged motivation for the killings and fear of further violence led to a steep decline in tourism to St. Croix, from which the island's tourism industry did not begin to recover until decades later.
On 31 December 1984, the group's leader, Ishmael LaBeet, hijacked American Airlines Flight 626 while in United States federal custody on a transfer to new detention. The flight was forced to land in Cuba, where LaBeet escaped. He was never recaptured. With the thawing of Cuban-American relations in 2015, was confirmed to be living at large in Cuba following an indeterminate amount of time spent in a Cuban prison.
Three of the five remain in prison; Joseph received a pardon from the Governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands in 1994 after 22 years' imprisonment, but died four years later of a drug overdose. LaBeet was the subject of the 2016 documentary film The Skyjacker's Tale.

I've got family over there. I got told the story in 1986. Kelsey grammars - cheers dad was murdered in St Thomas. There was also a guy called Daniels who was from there, he went the states came back fryed on angel dust. He beheaded a woman on a beach who was walking her dog in I think 1988. A rumour spread he broke out if jail. Everyone had their guns ready That place has had some unusual killings

Fountain Valley happened my freshman year of high school. I was in class with two sisters of one of the accussed and convicted. I knew then known as Beamont Gereau very well. I lived 5 houses down the street from the Gereau family in Golden Rock. It is (was) deliberate and unfortunate that the interviews didn't include natives of African descent. I went to school (St. Joseph Catholic) with White classmates. There was only one White guy that had racially oriented bias.

Sharing your uploads with everyone I can . You are indeed a world treasure and much appreciated. So nice to see a young man who appreciates the lessons of history and faces them so maybe some day we can keep from constantly repeating the mistakes, travesties and misconceptions. Well done to you my Brother. I will absolutely donate some next payday, thank you so much.

Michael Joseph I read Harold Willocks' book about the Fountain Valley massacre, and I saw the skyjacker's story. Based on what I have gathered, if the prosecution in this case was held to the same standards in regards to the burden of proof as , the numerous video taped police beatings and killing of black people, as well as the men who killed Emmit Till then those 5 men would be free. There were no eyewitnesses, or evidence that connected those men to the crime. The only thing they had were confessions that came after hours of torture. ( if anyone cattle prod my balls, I too will say anything they want me to say). Plus the judge was a former attorney for the people who owned Fountain Valley, which is a CLEAR conflict of interest.

@@jamesway Well, I've been going stx for years and every time it seems to get worst. Much worst. Crime never seems to come down. The ONLY thing that matters there is The Refinery and the refinery is old and has mayor problems including the environment. I was there for 6 months this time around and have a lot of friends from stx Running out of there. DON'T buy in STX but if you must buy for some crazy reason then make it the East side of the Island and make sure you have a gated property. Thats my advise.

@@jamesway Put it this way... Things are so bad in STX that the cruise lines Don't stop there anymore. The boardwalk at Christiansted is ok but the town is TRASH. I would NOT go to Frederiksted, especially at night. Go to St. Thomas if you can afford it. Btw, the natives from six seem to have a problem with people from the states. If you have any questions let me know.

@@yamomma6479 It’s very simple many Cruzans like Danish ppl way more than they like Americans. Many Americans were blatantly racist. Many Cruzans didn’t even like black Americans. I’m a middle aged black man from Harlem. I grew up under the Doctrine of the Honorable Elijah Muhammad. My ppl have self hatred, divided, are trendy Twitter activists and some of us have an unrealistic hope for unity (now). Cruzans have their own culture, likes and dislikes. I lived there for 2 short years. I was exposed to a lot. It wouldn’t be wise to be dismissive of the idiosyncrasies that exist in St. Croix. They are not a docile ppl. Many Cruzans are not to be F’d with
