Finally getting around to the DT2 that I picked up back in December of '21. I knew going into this one that it didnt have any spark as the previous owner said he thought it was the coil but wasnt sure. See what I find as I dig into the ignition system on this classic!

So glad i found your channel. I've commented on another of your videos but have to on this. It's the exact bike my dad had. He put a big sprocket on the back, 60t i think. Would only do about 50mph. He only used it off road. Dad had a hook on his left arm and we bent the end of the clutch lever so his hook wouldn't slip off. He only used it for taking off. After that no clutch. Bike lasted for ages with no clutch out trans issues. Thanks again for all your videos😊

Thanks for sharing and tuning in! That’s impressive that your dad was still riding. That would keep most people off a bike. More power to him!

I bought one new. Loved it then eventually sold for a CanAm 125. Only if I had all the bikes I bought!

Had one just like it. I had a blast on that bike. Road it for a couple of years, lost the rings in it. Rebuilt it and sold it to my buddy. Still runs. His kids ride it now.

That’s awesome. Even better that it still lives.

Yea, I believe that would have been in the early 80s. Pretty cool it's still going.

Interesting..!! I've been chasing a "no spark" condition on my 1975 DT 250. This gives me something else to check that I never thought of. Thanks for the video, great sleuthing, if that's even a word! Cheers.

@@Garage2Trail I figured it out finally. The primary coil winding was open circuit! Finding a replacement coil was the hardest part. The 3rd coil worked (hard to find parts here in Canada). Cheers.

That’s great that you got it figured out! Are you looking for a whole stator replacement or just a primary coil? I have yet to run into a bad primary on any of the bikes I’ve worked on so far.

I used to spray the stator with contact cleaner and it seemed to do the trick with the 74 YZ250 I acquired.

Good place to start! It’s almost always the points on these old bikes that I’ve worked on. In this bikes case it was the points covered in corrosion and the coil wire that needed soldered back together.

Currently working on an '81 DT100 - finding parts in many areas of the bike are hard to get my hands on. What sources do you use outside of Ebay? I love these bikes and would like to work on/restore more of them, but parts availability is my primary concern. Great content, keep up the good work.

I hear ya…some parts can be tough to find. Where are you located and what parts are you testing to hunt down? My first spot is eBay but I’ll first go to partzilla or babbits Yamaha to look at parts views for each area of the bike and get the manufacturer part number. Then I’ll use that to search eBay and google in general.

@@Garage2Trail I'm in Idaho. I do the same for OEM parts - I check Rocky Mountain ATV/MC to look at availability and/or part numbers and go from there...So it sounds like we are basically doing the same thing to find parts....thanks.

Ahh I was gonna say if you were closer to Ohio they have a massive parts swap goin on at AMA Vintage Days this coming weekend. You could also join a few Yamaha DT groups on Facebook if you use that and post what your are looking for on there. Some guys are scrap yard owners and can pull stuff off bikes in their yard. I got a few parts for my 75 DT250B that I did over the winter that way.

@@Garage2Trail I will check out joining the main Facebook groups as well - I'm in some - but there are probably some specific to parts.

Nice bike! I'm just north from u in Beaver county. I've had a bunch of dt2 and rt3 bikes and still have 2 left with some parts and knowledge if u need a hand.

Thank you! I really appreciate that and will keep you in mind! I’m sure I’ll be getting another DT down the road. They have become one of my favorite models now after tinkering and riding a couple of them since starting this channel!

@Garage2Trail The stators can be a real pain. If u ever need a hand rebuilding one lemme know. And if your ever in Beaver county I'll let u take my Rt3 for a ripp.

@boltbreakers8805 thank you again! I’ve been pretty lucky with electrics on these bike so far but I’m sure I’ll run into one of these days that’s gonna stump me. I’ll be sure to hit you up! Might need to come ride that bike too 😝

What did you use to clean up the stator areas? Mine is all Is corroded like this one actually worse

I would get some good electric contact cleaner. I think that’s what I used.

Could you show me how to test the stator ignition coils? I have the stator off the enginge. 😊I think I have a short because when I test the black or any color wire (with points open with cardboard) and i touch the stator base plate i have continuity which i think I'm not supposed to have
@Garage2Trail
@Garage2Trail 4 ай бұрын
That’s sounds like you are testing it correctly…at least that’s the way I determined my points needed removed and thoroughly cleaned up removing any bits of rust and corrosion. You may need to replace the points as well.
