Wow I have a flood of memories coming back watching this video. My parents bought me a used RX-3 for my first car back in the late 70's, and what a blast that car was to drive. I think they thought it was just another compact Japanese car hahaha! My best friend loved it so much he went out and found a beat up RX-2 to drive. When we sold it a few years later instead of checking the oil when you filled up with gas, you checked the gas when you filled up with oil. I probably spent more time driving over 100mph in that car than in all of the other cars I've owned combined.

I live out in the midwest and people give me cross looks when they walk into my shop and see rotors sitting on the workbench for the most part instead of pistons. Don't get me wrong, I've built my fair share of i4's, i6's, and even a couple v10's for either myself or for other people but personally I've always like Rotaries for a mixture of reasons. I like how they treated the 13B here, and you can tell Savant really knows how to take care of it just by the fact he knows you properly mix the fuel (I don't know how many times I've rebuilt RX-8's being the only rotary guy for miles because the Mazda oiler failed and they didn't mix themselves so the heat from friction just destroyed the apex seals), it's a simple trick that massively extends the lifetime of the seals/engine even if you have fun with it. I personally have a 13B powered 72 Opel GT, it's not built for 400 HP, closer to 240 but that's more than enough to go on drives with.

My brothers and I drove RX-3's and RX-4 and the RX-7's. My late brother used to soup up the RX-3 and street race the muscle car camaros and firebirds and laugh. He called the Mazda a "sleeper" car. We had the first RX-7 in our small town and sold it 5 years later for the same price we bought it at. $10k. Bought 4 more after that, 2 convertibles, one GSL, one GSL-SE. My brother has been gone for 32 years now and while in his hospital bed would talk about how he could fix his car. A true Mazda enthusiast, the dealer got the president to write him a thank-you letter for selflessly promoting Mazdas. I had to sell the other cars, life got harsh for my family. Still love the cars and glad I drove them.

Nice video Jay, I luv my 1993 RX-7 FD. I have owned 5 Rotary engine vehicles 1974 RX3, 74' RX4, 74' Rotary PU, 1985 RX7 GSL-SE, and 1993 RX7. Loved them all.

I owned a couple RX3s in my time. A '73 that I got from my brother and sold when we moved, and later a '76. Loved that car. The character, dynamics, sound, feel was 'right'. I remember tweaking the key and letting the engine roll to a silent start. The people around me didn't think the car was running yet. Occasionally had to flick the fuel gauge to get it operational. Endearing quirks. Several years back I started looking for another one to play with, but moderately rusted or beat up samples were going for over $10k. I moved on...

Great episode. I was smiling the whole time. Jay is a national treasure. In case any of you out there don't believe he is genuinely that nice, trust me, he is! I've met him and was fortunate enough to spent a little time with him. He donated so much of his valuable time to us and would be mad if I gave you the details. Suffice to say, I do not know a single person who can interact with anyone of any background or financial status and connect with them on such a pure human level, like Jay does. We love you, keep up the fantastic work!!!

I'd love to see what he finally does with the rear of the car! Graft in rx-7 wishbones? Get rid of leaf spring set up....could be real intersting! Should take to a track first get best lap times before only redoing rear suspension and then run laptimes again ...that would be interesting as hell!

That made me smile. DIY know how in the best way. I had a 1976 Mazda 808 when I lived in Boston in the eighties. Had some of the best adventures of my life in that car. Rusted. Salty slush used to spray up through the rust holes in the floor. Not sure why but I had some beautiful girlfriends riding around with me in that car. Eventually the rear axle broke free driving down Boylston street from rust at the mounts. Snapped the driveshaft and the back tires jammed way up in the fender wells.

I remember when a friend drove up with one of these. He couldn't be more "braggadocios" about his new acquisition. The car was the highest revving vehicle I have ever heard, on the city streets. Light and fast. The car was unbelievably quick. This was before turbochargers where available. Now, with all the available aftermarket, 4 rotor monsters and go fast products, these are more popular than ever!!! RRRMMMM!! RRRMMMM!!

Savant Young i can remember my friend had a car similar to this but it was a maroon color back in the day, ill be 41 in oct, so we are the same generation etc. the closes thing i had to one of these was a 280z.. but i just put a small block in her. this was back in 95. .. was a fun car.. but you nailed everything about this ride i think.. from the stance, to the color. it just works. i think some suspension would be my next mod.. but im sure you already know what you want to do.. thanks for sharing.. its a great ride.

I had two RX-3s: a '74 wagon (in 1983-4), and a '73 coupe (in 1989-97) just like the one shown here. The '74 was really in bad shape, but ran fairly well. The engine went on the '73, and I put in a 12A from an '82 RX-7 and a header. Fun, silly cars. I generally thought the RX-2 and RX-4 looked better than the RX-3, but the RX-3 was lighter than either. I ALWAYS wanted a Rotary pickup: what a RARE vehicle those were!

Legitimately some of the best taste that I've seen across the entirety of the automod world. Unique body, but not in an overly abundant modification of body panels, wheel base or location, etc. Understated color scheme, but completely unique. Quiet, big, but quality wheels, calipers, and brakes. No BS chrome, flares, or anything peacocking. No sense of tuner BS but all the power and an increased sense of Japanese design. Well done sir.

I used to have a 1973 RX3 my senior year in HS: 86-87. I wish I had kept it, it was fun on the hills of Los Angeles. About 10 years ago I started to look for one online, very hard to find, the ones in good shape are very expensive. And I discovered that the Australians do some incredible engine mods to the RX3!!!
