I've never been able to afford a muscle car but by golly this sucker showed up on the Facebook Marketplace and she was in my wheelhouse! I soon found out why this 1974 Camaro was so cheap! Stay tuned for all the disappointments of buying a cheap vehicle online! If you wanna own this rust bucket it could be yours for only $1,500! I figure the drivetrain is worth that for a donor. Email me at mortskerepair@gmail.com if you're interested. Thanks for watching!

Excellent! I had a 79 firebird that my wife’s brothers built from a few donors. Long story short, I took it to Sears (back in the day they did everything) and got new rubber and an alignment. It kept pulling so according to their policy they guaranteed the work and after three return trips I had a new front end suspension! Total= $2700.00... my bill, only $255.00 for the tires and alignment. They ate the rest! I’m pretty sure that’s why they stopped doing all services shortly after that because when I had one tire go bad I went back for them to replace it and the wrench I spoke to told me he thought my car was the final straw on the camels back as to why they no longer do big jobs. I can live with that. Miss the old bird though, she was a runner. (I had left it over a friends and it was tarped over the roof to halfway down the doors. My friend added another tarp thinking he was helping but it touched the ground all around it and it sweated it into a rust bucket. Over one winter it was destroyed.) Right up until I took her to the junkyard. She did 120mph on the straightaway right past the yard. It lost brakes and power as I parked it to pull the battery. Was a sad day to see her get forked and brought to the yard to be parted out. Yea I visited her when I’d go to find other parts and of course I wish I kept her but there’s always another project to move onto right? Well, thanks for taking us along, it was a hoot! Stay healthy, stay safe and stay greasy!

The rot around the roof is because it had a vinyl roof that was removed, the studs were ground off and then it was improperly treated before paint (vinyl roofs and northern cars were a bad combo). The "start box" under the hood was because of the "one year only" seat belt interlock system, in case of failure you could use that to start it. The interlock was removed by GM because everyone hated it.

That "NOS" button is the seat belt interlock GM put in 1974 and 75 cars. It prevented one from starting the car until the seat belts were fastened. Honestly, I am surprised it is still there. Everyone bypassed (removed) that 'feature' faster than you can say "party in the rear".

My belief is that the button under the hood is to over ride the seat belt/starter interlock. It gets pushed once to overide the systen so you can start the car without having to have the seat belt fastened. It resets once the car is shut off. Feds mandated this, but it was rescinded after one year. Had this silliness on a Lincoln from that era many years ago.

Hey Mortske! Yeah, she's a doner. A customer of mine had his old High School, low(ish) mileage 73 Firebird and wanted to restore it some 30 years later. By then it was too far gone to be financially feasable. He looked all over for a decent Firebird body but came up empty. He found an abandoned project 74 Camaro in fresh paint, still on the homemade rotisserie, for a hell of a deal. No driveline to speak of and the interior parts were mostly trash. They put the Firebird subframe in the shell along with the Poncho 400 4bbl and TH400, rear end and most of the 'Bird interior pieces. I tidied up the electrical and got the AC together for him. It's a pretty friggin sweet car and it sure makes the Camaro guys uncomfortable when they lift the hood, lol.

When you were driving this car, it reminded me of my old 1989 Camaro that I got brand new right out of USAF Basic Training. It was such a super fun muscle car. I would have picked up that pheasant, it's great delicious smoked. You do really look like you love these old cars, even though you say things like quadra puke carb , mullet mobile, and fiberglass was just caked in there . Those holes are like swiss cheese. I would keep the steel wheels, sandblast them, prime with rattle can rust paint, and paint them cherry bomb red, then use chrome mag lug nuts.for that old school hot rod ,rat rod look with white wall tires.

I had a 76 Camaro in high school back in the late 80s. 350 with a 4-speed. so i have a soft spot for the big bumper cars. the 74 Camaro is unique that a lot of parts on it are 1 year only. so they are very hard to restore. For example the quarter panels, Chevy changed to the large rear window in the 75 Camaro. no one makes replacement quarters for them. so you have to use both 70-73 and 75-77 quarters to splice together a quarter for them. the rear plastic sail panels that were painted black are also a one year only item. which is probably why the quarters were all butchered. the rust along the belt line is because at some point it had a vinyl top. the rust follow the line where the chrome trim would have been for the vinyl top. in 74 there was a requirement for seat belt interlock to start the car. they were notoriously flakey so GM put the start box under the hood is to bypass the interlock. GM switched to HEI mid way through 74 so early cars have points ignition and late 74 cars have HEI. so there are 2 unique wiring harnesses for them. those rimes may be originals, the base model Camaros got turbine style hub caps that year. that car is repairable but it will cost you more than its worth. personally I would recommend parting her out. there are a lot of guy looking for parts for this year, because no one makes the 1 year only parts. there is a for sale page on the forum for the second gen Camaro owners group page. www.nastyz28.com. I am currently restoring a 71 Camaro SS 396. if you decide to part it out let me know. I would love to have that tilt steering column. mine was pretty busted up when I got it.

This takes me back. I picked up a 1977 Type LT in Arizona in 1995 for $200, that had been buried under 3' of trash for a few years. A new battery, timing set, a carburetor and drain the EXTRA GALLON of oil out of the pan made for a running daily driver while I was in college. I ended up selling it in 1998 for $1500 when I moved to OK. I shoulda' kept it. A straight, rust-free body would be worth some money around here.

My Dad's 74 Trans Am has that same starter switch under the hood. He said he tried it once back in the 70s, and it worked, but it did not work in 2004 or so when I tried it. Another neat 70s GM feature some cars had was an under hood work light. It was basically a light bulb with a couple feet of attached wire, all stuffed into a small canister mounted to the inner fender. Wired directly into the car's electrical system and had a little toggle switch on it.

Someone drove that till the wheels came off, then barely put them back on...And Continued to drive it till the subframe fell off. I like how you call Pheasant before hitting it....Reminds me of one night dad was driving and about a block ahead I see a deer and boredly call out "deer". In half a block that fawn was highlighted in an oncoming SUV's headlamps and bounced into our lane. Okay, dad has half a block to stop...I'll see what he does. Last second he sees it slams on the brakes and rolls clean over it at 10MPH with his low slung 07 Accord...I learned Dad has worse night vision than I do that day. The plastic bumper was messed up and we assumed we killed a fawn...Then the thing gets up and runs back into the woods!

That 74 is pretty nice! A good friend of mine has a 74 Z28 that his brother bought new the motor was bad so it also has a pretty nasty 400 small block in it! I also see it's got Lincoln County South Dakota plates on it! Love you're show!

Great video. Last year of the flat rear window first year of the crap bumper...I mean crash bumper. At least the same year Firebird has a better front bumper. I had many of the 70-73 Firebirds and T/As.. Great content as always.

Helluva parts car. 2 bolt main 400. Good motor. Check the heads. Alot of them that year range share heads with the 350, only the 400 needs steam holes. Some didn’t have holes. Some 350s did. Factory mismatched. That is the whole reason they got a bad wrap. You probably knew that already I suspect. Enjoy. Good video.
