One truly fine bit of wood and steel there, Toadster. Impressive what an old school piece of hardware can do, with the right guy behind it. Good to see it doing what it was born to do.

Toad, I owned and exact same model of rifle back in the late seventies. I purchased it new, this was when Garcia was the importer and i was thrilled with the accuracy. If i remember correctly my most accurate load was 20.5 gr. of H4198. I tried the IMR 4198 at that time but it did not equal the Hodgdon brand. I shot many varmints with that rifle, coyote, badger, prairie dogs. The .222 is one of those immortal cartridges that I believe will be around forever.
@ToadleyBrowne3 жыл бұрын
This one is also imported by Garcia and seems to be a later cylindrical bolt. What's a tenth of a grain between friends:) H-4198 works great in that caliber. Thanks for watching!

You have good eyes. Those Sako's have a milled rail in the receiver that is tapered. It is a tad odd looking and I think the previous owner had to settle on those rings as it is hard sometimes on those guns getting the right height to get a 50mm close to the barrel. Since then Sako now offers some very nice looking mounts. Thanks for watching and your comment KCB38.

Just bought identical rifle today from my friend. Has weaver rings and bases and a beat up red field 3x9. I need an 8 or 10 power with a 50mm for night hunting coyotes. Could you tell me about your rings please? Med or high? Brand. I don’t like scopes any higher than they need to be, would like to get med but maybe they aren’t high enough. Thank you so much! Hope mine shoots that well.
@ToadleyBrowne2 жыл бұрын
The Sako mounts are tapered and a pain to figure out(and extremely expensive) as you have probably discovered:) If I was in your position I would use the existing Weaver mounts for the 1 inch tube and find another 40mm scope objective if the Redfield is not to your liking. Redfield used to have excellent glass. Before you re-invent the wheel, take that 3-9 out and give it a try. I was hitting IPSC size targets at 500 yards today with my simple Nikon 3-9 BDC. on my Henry lever action 45-70 rifle. If you really hate the Redfield there are a number of scopes out there with 1 inch tubes and 40 MM objectives that will get you to the next level of magnification without raising your cheek weld. The gun in the video is as issued in the 60's-early 70's with these bases and mounts that I have no idea what they are. A writer from Chuck Hawks had some comments regarding this topic: You will get better strength, lower cost, less weight, less parallax, and greater depth of field with the 40mm objective. Human eyes are not the best on the planet; much technical light transmission cannot be detected, much less used, by the human eye. Most of us do not want our scopes mounted as far away from the barrel as possible. Necessarily, larger objectives prohibit close scope to bore mounting. Human eyes quickly lose the ability to distinguish color as the light fades; the human eye's deficiencies pretty much negate the theoretical advantages of large objective lenses.
