My dad had a ‘77 Volare premier station wagon, white with wood paneling on the sides. By 1980 or 1981 the right front fender rotted out. Engine itself and transmission were very reliable.

That must have been an expensive recall since it also involved the wood grain vinyl wrap and the surrounding trim.

I owned a brand-new PLY Volare in '76. By '77, I had sold it to my then father-in-law who owned a car service center with approximately 4200 miles on the odometer. That car (225 Slant Six) spent more time in the shop than on the road. Everything from door hinges cracking (metal fatigue) to carb failures kept it on the shop lift. Before that I had owned a '58 Dodge Coronet, a '66 Dodge Dart and a '70 PLY Duster and never had any troubles with those MOPARS such as that Lemon Lawed Volare` had!

Me, too. In 45 years of driving many different used cars, the most comfortable and well laid out interior was the mid-70's Dodge Aspen SE Wagon. With the slant 6, it was incredible in deep snow if you had good tread. I delivered rural papers over a two county are in snow when my mother-in-law couldn't move using her Honda Civic with front wheel drive.

OMG I remember this. Our family had a 1976 Aspen in Pittsburgh and the fenders rusted away. When I say rusted away, there were holes in the front fenders. They replaced both fenders. How strange and cheap. Our Aspen also had starting problems in the winter. All signs Dodge/Chrysler was about to have a few years later with making cheap cars.

I lived in Pittsburgh Pa also and both my aunt and my grandparents had 1977 Plymouth Volare's they bought brand new. My grandmother tried to go to the Chrysler/Plymouth dealer to get her front fenders replaced because of recall. The dealer said we stopped that recall yesterday. Your a day to late. That dealer was a crook and burned her on not only on that Volare but her 83 Reliant too.

By this time, Chrysler looked to be in terrible trouble until Iacocca stepped in from Ford.

My 76 Aspen still has it's original pimple option fenders. They are pimpled as shown in the description but my car has never even seen road salt and has only 8K original miles. The story goes that the original owner of my Aspen asked that he be given the new fenders unpainted and not mounted because he did not want bodywork done to his car. The dealer agreed and I have the two new fenders for it. I also have another set if anyone needs them? Lol

This is in Baltimore! I'm from there (and still living there today as I write this). That Chrysler Plymouth dealership was located on York Road (it was formerly Jerry's Chevrolet, which had relocated to Joppa Road a few years earlier; it's now a body shop). The footage is likely from an old local newscast.

HIPSTERS FOR TRUMP The dealership has been closed for at least 30+ years, but the building itself is still standing. As I mentioned, it is now a Maaco body shop. .

I had a 77 dodge aspen in high school here in Central NC..... The car was rusting out by 1980 rust holes around door handles you could put your fingers through..... It got poor fuel mileage and would sometimes stall at intersections and stoplights apon acceleration..... The half vinyl roof was flaking off and thankfully it's been the most lemon car I've ever owned..... My next car was an 83 chevy camaro automatic with 305 engine, decent fuel mileage and I drove that car 225k miles in 15 year's with the largest repair was having the tranny rebuilt....Front end rebuilt and usual consumables...... Sold it to a teenager for 1500 buck's and the last time I saw him he had put 10k more miles on it..... That was roughly 25 years ago..... The Aspen jilted me at a young age.....

It was actually Iacocca that fixed the rust debacle by galvanizing the inner panels on future models. I was 4th generation in the family Chrysler/Plymouth dealership working sales at night and mostly as a body mechanic during the day. I personally replaced a bunch of fenders. It wasn't just because of salt. It was poor coverage of not great factory protection. We actually had one, brand new, still on the lot Volare rust through exactly where they pointed to in the video. I'm not very sure that the galvanization continued for long after Iacocca left Chrysler. I got out in 83.

Why did the '76s and '77s have that unusual rear panel with the scrolls? What was that supposed to be? It looks like random designs on the trunk for no reason.

Yeah. You must be talking about the Aspens. Didn't care for the grille either. The 78s though looked better than the Volare

That scroll work was a reflector on the 1976 and 1977 Aspen either special edition package or custom trim package. The Volare just had a silver panel. All the Volaris and the 78 through 80 Aspen didn't have that red scroll work panel

My dad had a 79 Volare that was a tank. One of the best cars he owned. Conversely he had a Dodge Aspen that was a piece of crap. Nobody knew about the recalls until 20 years later.

Today's recalls ( 2024 ) and workmanship is worse . The mid 77 to 80 Aspen/Volares were more reliable. The problem with the Aspen/Volares was Chrysler rushed it into production , so the Aspen/Volares had teething problems .

This would have to be either 1979 or 1980 because in the last screen shot there is a Plymouth Champ and a Plymouth Horizon. The Champ came out in 1979 and the Horizon in 1978. No Kcars to be seen so it can't be 1981 or later.

LOL . These car manufactures lie like an old dog . They knew why and let these cars go out on the lots to be sold . The reason why these cars rotted is because that they put wax foam sound deadening in those fenders and that trapped everything including water . The only way to keep that from happening is to keep your car dry . This means no car washing , Dont drive in rain and most of all and never drive the car on salted roads or even gravel roads . Chrysler should have been forced to buy those cars back . They was complete JUNK .
@klwthe3rd
@klwthe3rd 5 жыл бұрын
I take it that Chrysler didn't install the wax foam sound deadening in 1978-80 Volares and Aspens?
