1976 Chrysler New Yorker Brougham dealer movie compared with GM's Olds 98 and Buick Electra. Also the '76 Plymouth Gran Fury is compared with Caprice and LTD.
Judge for yourself which would be your choice....

The biggest thing to note is in 1974, this exact car would have been an Imperial, and thus would be competing with Cadillac, The "regular" New Yorker would be comparable to Buick Electra. Anyone who bought this car got one hell of a bargain!

tyler2610 Looks is a matter of taste. I thought GM products of this era looked uninspired and generic. My dad had a ‘77 New Yorker and kept it eight years. Other than the Lean Burn system, which was too delicate for its job, the car was trouble free and rattle free during our ownership.

I know that I am biased, but, in '76, I bought my 1st brand new Buick Electra 225 Landau coupe. Instead of getting the top shelf Electra, I was able to load it up with options. Astroroof, chrome wheels, VOGUE tyres, Pewter gray exterior, with vinyl cranberry 60/40 power seats. Trailer tow pack,(additional cooling, rear level shocks...) lamp monitors, cranberry triple pain stripes, speed alert, no cruise, A/C not automatic, positive traction control... & let's NOT forget the 455-4bbl. 6ppl comfortable, but 7 in a pinch. I made many long trips with that landyacht it never left me stranded. A neighbor had the PARK AVE & it's interior was AWESOME velour. But, a console on the car prevented it full 6pass capability. My VOGUE tyres also improved on the ride bc it was not the Uniroyals steelbelted tires. Plus on mine the size was increased to LR-70,15, instead of JR-78-15. The VOGUES had aramid belts which was several times stronger & lighter. I was constantly praised for having a Deuce & a quarter. When BUICKS were BUICKS. Not that crap they build in wuhang china!!!

Yes, it's a beautiful movie; but the comparisons can be covered with a blanket. You sit much lower in a Buick or Oldsmobile.....And look at how the guy deliberately opens the door not far enough in the Olds, making it look like it really is the ''lesser car'' The wheelbase of the Olds 98 and Electra were 127'' compared to the 124'' on Chrysler, making the rear leg room really not all that spacious...The New Yorker is a really nice design though!

What's funny is you could get a Plymouth Fury four door hardtop. It was probably more expensive then the Chevy or Ford. You couldn't get vent windows on the Fury four door hardtop either. Side note. The Fury had a center arm rest that you had to share with the passenger but was noted favorably in the Fury vs The larger Oldsmobile and Buick.

OsbornTramain...These were such nice cars... I just hated that Chrysler smog control computer on the big block engines... It really robbed the big block engine of a lot of performance... That computer gave me more trouble on my 1977 Chrysler Newport, with the 400 big block... Mostly when it was raining outside... And I had to replace the ballast resistor on that car about 6 times when I owned it... It kept blowing out for some reason... But, the car was immense, the ride was quiet, and it was one of the most comfortable cars I've ever owned... I miss these cars being on the road so much today... Its like we've lost a little piece of America... I really appreciate all your Chrysler posts... I think I have looked at every commercial that you put up for Mopar... I have loved great big Chrysler landyachts, and super cool Dodge and Plymouth muscle cars and police pursuit vehicles, my entire life... all of my 50 years... In 1972, my uncle bought a 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona, with a 426 Hemi, & a 4 speed... I was only 9 years old when he gave me a ride in that car, but it changed my life...and it made me a lifelong Chrysler fan... I can never forget the growl of that engine, and watching him shift the gears in that beautiful console, with that wood grain, 4 speed shifter... God bless mother Mopar!

+OsbornTramain I am a big Mopar fan but I agree it is a bit unfair to put this car against a Buick or Olds. Although, they were setting the parameters by cost, so maybe I'm wrong. Depends how you look at it, but I agree Cadillac was the real competition, and I would still take that New Yorker over the Cadillac even for the same money.
@OsbornTramain
@OsbornTramain 8 жыл бұрын
So what your saying, is that the New Yorker was a better car than the Buick or Olds........? Isn't that the whole point of marketing and trying to get increased sales? How is that unfair? Dollar for Dollar, the New Yorker was a better value........that's how business works and marketing. These New Yorkers had many of the standard features deleted over the previous years Imperial LeBaron.....making the car lower in price.

There is a bit of a contradiction here. They criticize the senior Buick and Olds for the driver and passenger sharing one arm rest and having exposed headlights. Funny how it's ok when the Gran Fury has exposed headlights and one arm rest. Something else. Back in the day the big three used to offer 4 door sedans and 4 door hardtops. The 4 door hardtops of course being more expensive because they were typically better equipped and desirable over the framed post versions. You could get a Grand Fury 4 door hardtop as well but they made that a point of value in the Fury to make it seem better than a true hardtop. Finally the New Yorker is a pillerless 4 door hardtop which was not mentioned negatively like in the training video

@bannol1
@bannol1 8 жыл бұрын
+Milford Civic Wrong, European cars were choked by emissions. By 1975 all new cars in the US had to have catalytic converters. Lead free fuel had been phased in since 1970. Air quality standards in America were much higher than in Europe at that time and European emission standards were heavily influenced by US standards. These cars were not at all underpowered. They were specifically designed for North American consumers who wanted spacious, comfortable cars that also offered good utility. These are not race cars. However, they can haul a decent size trailer, they were great for long-distance travel and could seat between six and seven people comfortably. Comparing what was offered to consumers in the US with similarly priced cars in Europe, American cars were good value for money. Not even Mercedes Benz offered the kind of luxury inclusions and other options that one would find in a regular full-size American family car for around five or six thousand dollars at that time.
