1976 GMC Motorhome Tear down

GMC designed the sh!t out of this RV in the '70s, and brought to the market one of the most futuristic campers for the time. From drive-ability, construction, space, to sleeping arraignments (ceiling hung bunk beds) this RV broke the traditional mold. We're excited to add this sleek RV to our portfolio page with a custom interior by Reparadise.

I worked at a GMC dealer in 1976/1978 when these were sold new. Very cool. Originally equipped with the 455 V8 the 1977/1978 models had the 403 V8. At least a couple of folks that purchased these new immediately had the original 403 V8 removed and replaced with 455 V8's from wrecked 1969/1970 Oldsmobile Tornados. Big difference in Horsepower and made those coaches really run nice. I helped out in the shop on these conversions. These coaches were way ahead of there time. The 1973 oil embargo happened when they were introduced. Kiss of death.

403s with 3.70 Final drive are a favorite setup though, seem to tow just fine and possibly get better fuel mileage according to owners

I've owned a total of six of these and currently have four. One has been repowered with a 6.5 diesel engine they put in the military HumVee. The 1973 year versions are celebrating their 50th birthday 🎉❤

Design, design, interior design and more design right now. Sometimes a client stalls on builds for a number of reasons. But this will be a multipart series.

There's a lot of great people that are full of information on the gmc motorhome. I,m doing a complete frame up restoration. When I complete gutted my motor frame everything. Things to look for wiring will be damaged, reseal the front and rear and the rain gutter, check the floors up by the step for water damage. It's not fiberglass it's a early composite you have to use an epoxy for repairs FYI.

Not correct. It is not fiberglass. It's SMC Sheet Molded Compound, along with aluminum.

There’s a guy in Empire Nevada who has a dozen of these rigs sitting in the desert east across Hwy 447 from the town and gypsum wall board factory. You can see the rigs on Google Earth.

Remodel a house and leave the old wiring? Restore an AMC Javelin and leave the original wiring harness? To each your own, but we're not putting our name something with wiring from the '70s. This is being built to a clients specifications. If you want to restore one to factory original, we can do that. There's plenty rotting away.

I think it's just a knee-jerk reaction in the GMC motorhome community. The ol' "gut & run" is something we've seen way, way, way too many times. Mine was a victim of this; someone had halfway torn out the insides, then abandoned the project for a few years. Hoping to see some follow-up videos for this thing!

Depends on how it's done, remains to be seen. GMC 12v wiring was all through plastic loom through the body. We'll see if this build uses anything similar or just bare wire running every which way. I came from a Holiday Rambler Class A to the GMC and the wiring difference was stark. GMC was all bundled, neat and secured, and documented in the schematics which are available. Holiday Rambler was a rats nest and no documentation.

There is more to come! We're in the process of designing a modern update to the interior while keeping a classic feel. It will likely be a three or four part series - but it will be a bit till the next part is ready to share.

Cabinets were not structural. Very much of the body skin is aluminum, not fiberglass. It's pretty much just fiberglass where there are compound curves, and below the beltline.

This video was full of problematic statements that expose the fact that you don't really know what you're dealing with when it comes to the GMC motorhome. It would be money well spent for you to attend a GMCMI convention / rally and learn more about the RV you are attempting to 'renovate'. If you do it right, you could actually end up with a great community of supporters (and potential clients). Good luck with your build.

@@Reparadise ok, that's not a factory dash, the body is not fiberglass, it's FRP but only below the beltline, above the beltline and the roof is aluminum, those are not factory seats, the cabinets don't provide any structure to the body, the ceiling panels can be removed without removing the cabinets, you were surprised it had a central vac?, at the body / floor there won't be any rust b/c it's aluminum, yes the floor plywood is visible in the wheelwell, that's normal. Cool replacement cabinets would be a nice addition to the GMC community, maybe this is something that will come out of your shop. It will be interesting to see where your build goes. Good luck. GMCMI rally is in fall in Michigan, check it out if you want to learn a bunch about the GMC.

There's one of these in the RV Museum in Elkhart, Indiana that a couple spent $500K and ended up with something that wasn't driveable. Be careful about weight and weight distribution. These have a drivetrain from an Oldsmobile Tornado not a truck chassis/ drivetrain.

@@Reparadise the Fall GMCMI convention just opened registration up for the Michigan rally. You guys should come out! Bring whatever you have to camp in and attend the 5 days of informational seminars. It would be worth your time!
