I was a schoolboy back then but very well remember this game. Later it turned out that our team (Bulgaria) would have qualified for WC 1978 had they won here. Everybody was convinced that there was no penalty. Everybody also suspected that Panov was offside for the second goal, but as I watch it now I think he is actually onside. Overall, Bulgaria didn't deserve to win this game, but that Scotch referee was willing to help :)

Penalty very debatable from this angle. no offside for the equalizer though. Pity the best BG player in the 1970's couldn't even find the goalframe from the spot

offside is clear even the referee admit it some years after the game. And what about the clear foul on Platini at the beginning of the second half ??

Nul comme résumé, ils omettent l'action ou le gardien bulgare fauche Platini, et sur ce coup si tu ne siffles pas penalty et bien c'est une faute qui n'existe plus. A coté de ça tu as vraiment l'impression que Bonev n'a qu'un but, foncer pour rentrer dans la surface et s'écrouler, comme s'il connaissait à l'avance la décision à venir de l'arbitre. Je me rappelle très bien les témoignages des défenseurs bleus à l'époque, ils n'avaient pas touché Bonev le moins du monde. Arbitrage très suspect, il aurait du y avoir une enquête.
