Tong Gugliotti of Wolcott, CT ordered his 1977 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 new and has owned it for nearly a half-century. It has fewer than 53,000 on the odometer, but Gugliotti put a few more on it for RIDE-CT.

I’ve got one too. Mines red , 4 speed. I ordered it myself . I have the Type LT interior. Took 3 months to get mine delivered 7/6/77. It has 29K miles.

I also ordered a 1977 Z28 with 4 speed, it was 1st new car with A/C and no power windows. Mine was silver with black interior. Wish I kept it. I owned my 71 Z28 at the same time. After the 77 I ordered a black on black 1978 Z28 4 speed, no A/C but I checked off power windows. I also ordered the turbine aluminum rims. My stripes were black-gold so my wheels also had the gold accents. Then in 1980 I ordered a red orange Z28, no A/C, no power windows and std Z28 wheels. Then in 1981 I bought a 1 owner 1970 Z28 4 speed with black custom cloth interior. Car is red with white stripes and I still own it. Non RS. The original owner who I ran into a couple yrs ago asked if it was for sale. He wants his car back bc I told him a friend of mine owns 2 but he wasn’t interested in his. I told him mine isn’t for sale.

Very strange because at 18 fresh out of highschool I ordered one of these in Red on black with the 4spd. I ordered power steering power brakes AM/FM with 8track stereo and factory air. After 6 weeks of not getting it I told the Chevrolet dealership to cancel the order. Non cheerfully took back my $150 dollar security deposit and went over to Pontiac dealership and bought a brand new on the lot 77' trans am 400/4bbl- 4spd. Same transmission but Pontiac was smart enough to have plenty on hand to meet the needs of the public. I still own mine and it's for car shows only now showing just over 93,000 miles. And hey I got ttops to Boot 😂

What a great story ! I was hoping you'd not sell that ! Always keep it in the family. So rare to still have a low miles Z28 like that. I always wanted one but now they are way high in value. That was a dream back in high school. I'm 61 now. And the 78 storm I remember well / got it here in Michigan too !

Congrats to the owner for still enjoying this beauty. That's quite a backstory about its last drive in the snow.

I'm from Houston and did the same, ordered and waited seemingly forever. As with him it was my first new car,I was 20 years old.Actually ordered a black car with red interior, that wasn't available. The car they sent had a color combo I couldn't accept. There happened to be a reject at the dealer with black interior,4 speed and a/c,and power windows.

It's actually fairly fortunate that he kept his order alive despite the strike. He could have canceled and re-ordered a '78 to get what at the time would have been the more desirable "newer model". Today though the '77 Z/28 is the far more rarely seen car due to both that strike and the simple fact that Chevy was late to the idea of bringing back the Z/28 after it had gone away for a few years. Pontiac was suddenly selling a lot of Trans Ams in 1977 because of a popular movie. Chevy went all out for '78 with a car to counter the Trans Am. The car would get fender louvers, hood scoop appearance and wrap front spoiler that was a nod to the more aggressively styled Trans Am. It worked and Chevy sold a bunch more '78 Z28s and 1979 was the RECORD Saling year for Camaro in general and especially for the Z/28 model. I had a '79 myself back in the day. In 1977 though the car had all the right pieces in it but it's appearance was rushed and really amounted to little more than sticker package only that separated it from the rest of the Camaro line up. So buyers didn't rush into it as a must have option in '77. Today that makes the much smaller production run of the car far more desirable in my opinion. I still see lots of '78-'81 Z/28s at car shows but I very rarely if ever see a '77. That makes this car the one much rather have today.

I would have bought a '77 z28 identical to this one, had my uncle who was a used car manager for a large GM dealership in suburban Detroit, not told me that the '77 1/2 Camaro z28 was only available in a 3 speed manual. I ordered a Camaro Type LT loaded in late January, and when he called me to take delivery in early April, the car had the sluggish v8 305 2 bbl...which was NOT what I had ordered! I was LIVID!! My uncle told me that GM was subbing Chevy 350s into Olds Cutlass Supremes, due to high demand and a shortage of Olds Rocket 350 v8 engines. The only Camaros receiving 350s were z28 models.

A 3-speed manual in a Z28 never happened and plenty of 77 non-Z28 cars had the 350. Think your uncle was wrong on both counts. As far as your car, the plant would have notified the dealer of a shortage and impending change, they wouldn't have just made a major change like that and built and shipped the car without saying anything. The dealer is invoiced for the car as soon as it's built so they knew full well what they were getting.

@thud9797 He was wrong on one. Camaros with a manual trans were 4-speed, not 3. As far as GM installing Chevy 350s in Cutlass Supremes due to a shortage of Rocket 350s, and limiting them to the reintroduced Camaro z28 mid-year, that did happen. Whether or not that continued until the end of the model year, I do not know. But Rally Sport, LT, and Coupe models manufactured before the shortage began, yes there were Camaros with the 350 4 bbl for sale if they were in dealer stock only. In fact, there was a '77 Camaro Rally Sport in the dealership showroom that day with a 350 4bbl auto, but it was poop brown/saddle interior, and I def did not want that color. There also was a new white L88 Chevy Corvette w/T-top in the showroom, that had a sticker price of $10,200.00...but I had points and could not afford to insure it @ age 21.

I owned the same exact car. Wish I had never sold it ,same color, same paint and stripes package. Wish I had never sold it. I regret selling it to this day. I purchased it from a coworker used for $800 and sold it for $600 a year later and I regret it !

Kids 98% of the time have no interest in these old cars and will sell them the minute they get their hands on them. Sad but true. So enjoy your car and leave your kids something else.

I commented earlier but I need to expand on that and mention all the multitude of similarities to my own story. I ordered my silver 77 4 -speed with all options except air and body side mouldings from Paul Lester Chevvrolet in Lebanon, N.H. I also checked off all the boxes i wanted on it and waited and agonizing 9 weeks for it. That is a long time for a 21 yr old to wait for anything. During the blizzard of 78 I too was at work. I left work and fought to keep the car going straight in the 4 inches of snow that had fallen. I barely was able to back in on the lawn. What a surprise when I woke up and could only see the CB antenna just exactly like your pic. (somewhere i have a pic) That was the only snow it has ever been in too. I still have it and it is willed to my grandson. It was my daily driver and only had a $200 car to drive in the winter but was dedicated to keeping the Z out of the salt. If your car is a 10, which it sure look like it is, mine is an 8. A crate motor and 3 paint jobs later it is now always covered in my Florida garage. BTW, I have not laid my eyes on a 1977 Z28 in probably 35 years. I know they're out there, I just have not seen one. I still tinker with it to keep it nice, but it really doesn't need a thing. Not much on it has not been replaced over the years, but no one likes a trailer queen. We've been through a lot together and I've had that longer than any girl. The best part is it doesn't get mad at me and has never left me anywhere.

Chit happens and costs a lot of money to keep plants with high union labor costs. Some Delphi plants when they closed they paid the workers to stay home and do nothing because that was cheaper than keeping the plant open.

@@ride-ct-classiccars Sad...and good I guess. most people who have a car given to them have it listed on CL before they even get the title or keys makes me ill. dont agree with "doing anything will devalue it" like not fixing rust. Nobodys gonna retire off a grand/few k anyways. Cars are cars....nuts n bolts.
