She communicated class, sophistication and smarts - and she was a genius at selling Cadillacs and other cars for her family's Potamkin car dealerships. She was Luba Potamkin, and here she is selling used Caddies for under 5,000 bucks in the summer of 1977, in a commercial plucked from the WPIX Archives.

Interesting note about Victor Potamkin, Luba's husband, he had a successful Lincoln/Mercury and Chevy dealer in Philly where he's from, and then expanded to NYC taking over these two Caddy dealers that were actually owned and run by General Motors itself and both doing poorly in sales, but Potamkin turned their business around to make them the largest Caddy dealers in the world.

He did that by stripping each car down to bare bones, so people could opt to add those features back if they wanted to. Either way, it made it easier for more people to “step up to Cadillac.” A very savvy move. He was a tremendous businessman.

@@lilibethdoherty295 i liked to ‘81 98’s. I actually liked the 98’s styling better than the ‘80-‘84 Caddy Devilles, especially the 2-doors. I never liked the styling of the ‘80-‘84 Coupe Deville. I’m really starting to feel old. I remember all these cars when they were new. I don’t remember this particular commercial, but I remember the Potamkin Caddy commercials on TV. Just before each model year, she would do the Potamkin commercial with all the new Caddy’s under a sheet, and was something to the affect we can’t show you the new models yet, but come to Potamkin and see them in our showroom. My father bought a few Caddy’s from Potamkin, in the ‘70’s.

I remember when those cars were for sale , The Downsized 1977 models were the ones everyone wanted those models were the trade ins they took and could not give them away. GM scored a win on the all new 1977 Caprice and sedan deville and boxy Seville that was a risk to the established Cadillac it looked like the new Caprice.

Yep. Everyone was excited about the smaller Sedan de Ville at that time. You’re right, they drove just like a Caprice though.

@@TVHouseHistorian Have you ever driven on of those 20 foot long pre 77 model caddies ? The engine was smooth but when you went from a stop to highway speed it would pull the front end up and the right side of the car would sink down a few inches from the torque of the engine, my Dads Mark III Lincoln drove so much better than those 1965 to 1976 Caddies. I still have my Mint Condition 1980 Olds 98 with a 350 and is a D II body which were all full size RWD from 1977 till 1996.

@@lilibethdoherty295 Yes, I test drove a ‘75 Coup de Ville at a used car lot when I was in high school. My dad went with me and refused to let me buy it. I was so upset!!! Then several years later I had the pleasure of test driving a 1976 Eldorado. Yes, they drove so smooth. I loved them! But in 1977, I remember as a kid many of the adults were buzzing about the new downsized Caddys, and a family up the hill from us bought one brand new. I remember it being incredibly smooth as well.

Now it is to give you nothing but grief, My 05 Colorado only has a driver side door lock only, they could not spend 2 bucks to put one on the passenger side as well? @@TVHouseHistorian GM scored a win, and the same FWD platform from the Seville was used on the 1977 Eldo. Riv. and Toronado. The Seville came out in 1976 and I was parking them at the local mob restaurant at that time and remembered the MB 450 SE Had navigation with a map on the screen and it was so far ahead like the Germans usually are. The guy with the MB 450 se went to club fed for a variety of reasons though.

To this day, you see way more big cars street-parked in NYC where in Boston, Philly, LA and San Fran people mostly drive much smaller cars. The theory is that people in those places buy cars to get around their cities and New Yorkers buy theirs to get out of the city - but I think the Potamkins had something to do with it too.

Sigh... Fondly remembered. What was Potamkin's east side location is long gone (replaced by a very tall, black smoked glass apartment building 😖), BUT, its west side location - NOT only is it still there, it's thriving. Terrific to see Luba 'Mrs. Potamkn,' again.

If I'm being honest, this commercial has always kind of annoyed me. I get Luba's point, of course, & I can see how this commercial could DEFINITELY work for either someone who is open to the idea of buying a used Cadillac over an LTD or Monaco or someone who's always REALLY wanted a Cadillac, but thought they could only afford the LTD or Monaco, but by & large, Mr. & Mrs. American Car Buyer who were in the market for a new LTD or Monaco weren't going to want to hear how they could buy a Cadillac for the same money. They wanted to hear how they could buy a new LTD or Monaco at a price that wasn't going to send them into cardiac arrest.

Luba is a fine example of what a class act is all about. Television (commercials especially) has devolved into a strange hip-hop, jungle jive infused world of nonsense not fit to watch. Sorry to say folks, but I think it's all down hill from here.

It was always a blue screen. remember when we would broadcast a 10 second spot for the "Money Store" commercials at EVERY break. It still rings in my head!
