There are a number of versions of this great game out there, but for this one I used several different sources to provide a near-uncut broadcast as I could from opening to closing credits. There is also a brief recap of the game that aired several days later by Jim Lampley on another ABC Sports program.

Baseball in the 70's was still hugely popular. Football had passed it in television audiences, but baseball was still a big part of sports and pop culture in general.

I saw this game on TV back in 1977. I was only allowed to watch the first three innings before bedtime in the Atlantic Time Zone. My parents woke me up for the bottom of the eigth, and all I can say is watching Reggie's third home run of the game was magical to this Yankee fan. A moment I'll cherish for the rest of my life.

Not my favorite announcer, I just considered him OK. It is tempting to dislike him, for pronouncing Yankees as "Yangkizz" about 1000 times during this broadcast. I was at this game, at age 20 during a year off from college, very close to where Reggie's last HR landed, 4 seats to the right of one of the guys climbing the fence. They were having an adrenalin rush making them want to get the ball, before they realized people on the other side were going to beat them to it, so it wasn't worth getting thrown out or arrested unless they ended up with the ball! This is the first time I've watched the ABC telecast of the entire game (albeit, with commercials and other dead spots edited out.). TV resolution back then wasn't what it is now, but I've never seen a clearer version than this one. In 45 years, I've not run across even one high-resolution photograph which shows me in the crowd there. Sure would be nice to find one where I can positively ID myself, preferably right when the ball is landing.

For me , the 1970's will always be the best decade for baseball. I guess because the players were less scrutinized about stats back then , not to badly over paid , more relaxing to watch back then , no computer generated strike zone box , less father to son players/nepotism/ ,less police security and the fans were more laid back and cool. Also , I was in my 20's thru most of the 1970's.

@@Jiltedin2007 Michaels was the best baseball announcer had and they sidelined him completely. But the worst thing was that Arledge shoved Cosell onto the broadcasts and took advantage of a loophole to ignore the Commissioner's request that local announcers be used on the telecasts as had been the case in the past. In the end, Bill White and Ross Porter were given worthless crumbs of pregame and postgame analysis (both did the Series on CBS Radio in the opposing team's park). But it should have been Scully and Phil Rizzuto having a role in these games (and definitely not Tom Seaver who was put on the games only because of Arledge's obsession with stars and not broadcast competence).

Remembering these series as a kid, whenever I heard commentators call the name "Thurman Munson", my brothers and I joked that they were saying "Herman Munster". We were sad to hear of his passing in 1979 😢

Game 6 of the 1977 World Series is one of my favorite Baseball Classics. That was the year I was born. I was born in New York City on January 27th, 1977. I was born six months premature. October 18, 1977 was Reggie Jackson’s big night. Howard Cossel , a fellow New York City Native, was on the call that night.I watch this classic over and over again. It stands the test of time in baseball history. I own a Reggie Jackson t shirt, that I bought at a sports store last year. One of my favorite classic games!

Didn't realize Tom Seaver was already preparing for a second career after baseball as he often worked playoff games when he was not in the postseason himself. Ironically, after his playing career ended given his association with the Mets, he actually was a play-by-play voice for the Yankees for a few years.

Amazing Mike Torrez stat: In 1975 for the Orioles, Torrez was 20-9 with a 3.06 era in 36 starts with 16 complete games. Here's the amazing stat: He pitched a whopping 270.2 innings that season, but only struck out 119 batters while walking an MLB high 133. He also allowed 238 hits and his WHIP was 1.371. He obviously pitched out of a lot of jams with all of those base runners, but still managed to win 20 games with a solid era. I looked up his career stats, and Torrez walked over 100 in a season six times and led MLB in walks 3x. For his career in 3043.2 innings pitched, Torrez had only 33 more strikeouts than walks... 1,404 to 1,371... but his career record was 185-160. One of those pitchers who was effectively wild.

A huge key to the Yankees winning this World Series in Game 6 despite losing Game 2 at Home was winning 2 of 3 in Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles. If the Yankees didn't win 2 of 3 in Los Angeles even if the Yankees won Game 6 it still would have had to go to Game 7.

I can only imagine that the 4 Lexington Avenue Express (IRT Jerome Avenue Line) and D 6th Avenue Express (IND Concourse Line) was extremely crowded at the 161st St-Yankee Stadium stations, both elevated and underground that night.

@@goldeneve he shared those Fall Classics with Al Michaels. Jackson would do games 1,2,6,7and Michaels 3,4,5 in 1979 and 1981. The 1979 series finished in 7 and the 1981 series finished in 6, so Jackson announced the championship game those times.

Part of the reason Al Michaels and Keith Jackson split play by play duties was so that Jackson could continue to do college football on Saturdays.

@@paulsonj72 And I have to admit that rigid devotion to college football, which even extended to skipping playoff games in 76 and 81 etc. never sat well with me as someone who isn't much of a college football fan and wants baseball to come first. Jackson was okay, but he was never a true baseball announcer in the way Michaels was and IMO ABC should have made Michaels the #1 baseball guy from the outset.

For those who would say that the game is trash in 2021 let's not forget that Reggie is *still* the career leader in strikeouts. How much would have he struck out today? Having said that, this is a filthy display of power. He would fit in very well in today's game imo.

as great as these 3 Reggie Jackson home runs were, my all-time favorite home run was hit by Reggie on the 1978 Yankee Stadium season opener. As a stadium promo, all the fans received Reggie Bars. And on the first pitch of his first at bat of the game, Reggie did it again, HOME RUN!!! The crowd went wild!!! And as Reggie was rounding the bases, everybody was throwing their Reggie Bars onto the field. While chanting...."Reg-gie!!! Reg-gie!!! Reg-gie!!!" I wish some one could post footage of that on youtube.

RJ hit those bombs off from Burt Hooten, Elia Sosa, and the knuckler, Charlie Hough. Ross Porter and Vin Scully broadcasted this on the radio as I listened to this broadcast in Hawaii, on the radio. The television telecast was aired three hours delayed that night in Hawaii. This was a historic night and moment for RJ and the Yankees. Winning pitcher, Mike Torrez, was awesome, but he signed with the Boston Red Sox after the 1977-World Series.

Billy was under tremendous pressure to win the World Series as George probably would have fired him. But before Game Six Billy got a call to meet GM Gabe Paul in his office and was told the Yankees were extending his contract that included a $35K bonus a new Lincoln Continental automobile and paying his rent on his residence. People who saw Billy that night said he actually looked somewhat relaxed for the first time in a long time.

Actually Toby Wright was the Yankee organist. He left after the 77 season and Layton returned after an eight year absence the following year.

I've always wondered what pitcher Billy Martin would have chosen to start Game 7 - if there had been a 7th game. I wondered this because the Dodgers should have won game 1 when Garvey was clearly safe at home but was called out in the 6th inning. LA would have won that game 4-3 in 9 and then the series would have been tied at 3 games each after Game 6. But Martin didn't have many options for a Game 7 Starter. He could have gone with Guidry on 3 days rest but he wasn't effective on short rest. Hunter could have been available but he had a sore shoulder and was rocked by Dodger Hitters in Game 2. Although he only pitched 2 1/3 innings in Game 2 he also threw 2 innings in Game 5, but he could have been ready to pitch Game - if his shoulder held up. AND THEN, there was Ed Figueroa who did not pitch at all in the 77 WS. Would love to hear anyone's thoughts on this and/or what they recall about any chatter as to who Martin would start.

Actually, if there'd been a Game 7 it would have been rained out the next night because there was a downpour in NY. So Martin would have had Guidry available on four days rest.
