Feb 26, 1978. Credit to KH for merging the color game film with the radio broadcast many years ago. Sounds like Tony Roberts and Pat Sheridan on the call.

I remember interviewing Digger Phelps on Marquette student radio years later about this game. Digger was such a class act and the kindest, friendliest of bloodthirsty passionate rivals. He, Al & Ray Meyer’s Midwest Catholic hoops trinity helped define college basketball for a decade-plus.

Notre Dame, Marquette and DePaul were for all purposes their own conference.

Also had Louisville. Dayton. Davidson. South carolina. Who were solid inds in 70s. LaSalle. And i think Cincinatti and Whitcha State. Syracuse? BC? Big 5 guys didnt want to play in 70s against them. It dudnt matter cause only 1 team made it from the conf. Irish went 26-2 in 73 74. Lost only to UCLA in a blowout after snapping 88 game streak. Then lost i think last game to #7 Marquette. So they were put in midwest with marq. Louisville and them. They had to play a 1rst rd game. Mich got bye cause conf champs. So you had 4 of top 12 teams in 1 region. Yet indiana who lost big 10 title was 5? Out of 24 teams only 9 top 20 teams made tourney. 3 top ten and #12 mich in one region. Al and Digger were critical of NCAA and their choices of giving Big confrences the easy byes ignoring independent teams. Why a 23-6 irish team got a #1 seed in 79 mideast was puzzling. The 2 was MSU with Magic. They were 23-5 24-6 for 5 years. Always getting put in west or midwest.

I watched the first half of this game, then had to leave for work, or class or someplace. On the sports highlights that night, I was blown away to see what I'd missed. Another Irish come from behind upset win at the ACC.

Well Bill Hanzlik was a superb defensive player, and Duck Williams was as cool under pressure player ND had...they were multitalented.

Excellent point. Hanzlik was a beast, and The Duck was one of the best shooters ND ever had...

When you're ranked No. 1 and you visit Notre Dame, you just may lose. Ask UCLA, San Francisco, North Carolina, and Marquette.

Hanzlik and the team who was in final four year before was a #1 seed in mideast in 79. At 23- 6 they had always been underseeded with the same 23 5 24 6 for last 5 years. Bird and ISU got well desevred 1 in midwest. Depaul was 26-2 got 1 seed in west. Irish get 1 seed in mideast. 2 seed Spartans and Magic. In Regional final Jud had magic just move to wing. They just kept throwing weakside lob to Kelser and irish just played stupid. Hanzlik was 6'7 7th man but just laid off magic instead of playong him tight. All i know is Hanzlik never avg over 10 pts or 6 boards. Yet he was the Nuggets 1rst round pick in 80 at 24? Guy was 1rst team defensive nba for 6 7 years. Crazy

@@shawnyoung8752There was a story about Larry Bird yelling at Doug Moe on what he was doing having a white guy (Hanzlik) on him.
