This was one of the few Dodge products I really liked during that time period. Seems to be along the lines of the Chrysler Cordoba. It apparently was not a hated vehicle in it's time, because Dodge brought back the nameplate in the mid 2000's with their Magnum wagon.

Awesome Mopar! I once owned a 78' Magnum XE with a green on green color combo. Mine, also had the 360 v8 engine. Very comfortable interior and ride. I swapped out the original rims for a set of Cragar SS wheels which really dressed it up. The car sat for a few years and I eventually sold it. I wish I still had it now. I really wanted the sportier GT model with the wheel cladding fender flares, road wheels, T-tops and stripe package, but never was lucky enough to locate one. The XE was a cool Mopar model regardless!

I had two of these cars. The first one was a 1978 Gloss Black Moonroof XE 400 engine. Second car was a Basic 1979 Brown, 318 engine. Both cars where headaches after 66,000 miles. One month one needed a repair, the next month the other needed a repair. It repeated many times. Took most of my income at the repair shops then. Got rid of the 1978 at 100,000miles and the 1979 at 106,000 miles . The 318 engine was still solid. The 400 engine needed work.

Thx for posting this near perfect example of a car you just don't see now days! If I didn't have 2 '79 300s, which this car is a close cousin to, I'd be mighty tempted. Alsip is right next door to my town. I actually was looking for flaws in this car, and didn't see any aside from a couple of scratches in the interior and 1 stone mark on the driver's door. The color is Dove Gray. Optioned the way it is, it would've been an expensive car back in the day, at nearly $7k when new. Maybe more. It's nice to see an unmolested original example. I've never seen 1 better, to tell you the truth. If you're wondering, it has the 1 step up 360 CID 2bbl K code engine with Lean Burn computer controlled emission system, but this 1 has an updated p/n which means it has updated modern digital electronics, which made for a much more reliable car. It was rated at 155hp at 3600 rpm and 270 lbs ft of torque at 2400, and came with an A 904 lock up converter automatic ( some had 727s) with an 8 1/4 rear end and 2.45 to 1 gears. Std single exhaust cars had the big 26.5 gallon tank and at 8.4 to 1 compression, it will run just fine on our 87 octane no lead fuel.

Hey - reading your comment, and I’m floored that you have two 79 300’s! I had one from 92 till 2002, and loved it! Should never of sold it, but it went to a car loving friend about two hours away from me. I check in on her once in a while! It was my grandpas car and I inherited it! I believe, if I remember correctly, that my 360 4 barrel motor was an A-58(?) code engine? The “police interceptor” motor? Can you educate me on this a bit? Peace

The back window is an opera window, and the good lock was an add on aftermarket. From the drivers seat if toy looked over the hood the left light on the edge of the good visible to the driver served as a fuel indicator if you were accelerating and wasting gas. The indicator also was the left turn indicator I believe. It is a huge car. Reminiscent of a lost time when big cars were on the way out in the USA. Still live it although I never owned an American car. My favorite cars are those made in Japan, and even this are becoming tater today. Be safe driving.

I grew up in central Saskatchewan. And as a kid I really remember one car that stood out from all the cars, my dad had. '66 Chrysler, I believe it was a Windsor. 383 4 bbl, that car was our road trip car. It was the parts runner for the farm. Early '80's it took us down to the states. I was a teenager, we hit Vegas, Red Wood Forest, Disney Land ect... We went all the way to Mexico. I don't ever recall it leaving us stranded. Prior to moving to Alberta the timing chain jumped. It got left behind. Well over 500,000 miles on her. Dad regrets not hauling her, but I still have memories being knee high to a grasshopper, playing with my hot wheels cars looking out the rear window. hell I cant even remember what I had for lunch yesterday,

Actually, the die cast 'turbine' of the wheel is bolted to a steel wheel. In time it would work itself loose and they would rattle like mad and sound like you had marbles in your wheels!! They were great cars except for the 'Lean Burn' ignition system. It was sort of an early computer controlled fuel and ignition system. Part of the system, the 'brain box' was mounted to the driver's side of the air cleaner. When it worked, it was fine but when it didn't, it was a miserable sob! A lot were de-lean burned by replacing the distributor and carburetor with a conventional units. Another great episode!

Was in High School, when this car was out, always loved the styling. Not too far from my school was a Dodge dealer, usually only had about 3-4 cars in the showroom as they had a lot somewhere else, but one of these was on display. I actually went in they were a little skeptical about a young kid coming in to look at the car but I had lied and said that my father was interested in one, and I wanted to tell him about the one they had. I think the price was close at $7.5-$8k and it had T-tops was reddish outside color and red interior.

That's a beautiful MOPAR! What is that a 360? Or maybe even a 400? My dad had some amazing MOPARS back in the day! Starting with a 59 New Yorker, then a 62 New Yorker. Then he ordered an Imperial in 1964, it was a Crown Coupe in Med. Metallic Blue, with a black vinyl roof with unique straight type of grain. With a blue leather interior. The engine was a dual quad 413 Wedge, that had a spider looking intake manifold with the carbs mounted over the valve covers, one in the front, the other in the rear, with big cast iron exhaust manifold that curved up along the valve covers, with big dual exhaust and huge mufflers and resonators so the car was silent! It also had push button shift! With a clear looking square type of steering wheel and these big handles you pulled back to open the huge doors!! After a new brother and sister he traded that in 1968, for a Chrysler Town&Country beach wagon! With three rows of seats. That car came with a 440 4 brl dual exhaust, with posi track. That was the first car I drove with a license! I had that car going so fast one night with a friend! The speedometer was a long horizontal gauge right in front of the driver, with a square clock just past that to the right, we were going so fast the speedo needle went passed 120, into the clock to 3 o'clock!!!!! Who knows how fast we were going!! All I know is the car got very light feeling, the doors sounded like they were going to get sucked right off and the engine was screaming, we must have covered a couple miles, and burned about 1/8th of the tank!!! Man that car was a hi way flyer! A friend wanted to race me with his dads Ford Country Squire, that had a 390, we we neck and neck till around a hundred, then that big old Chrysler shifted into third gear and just walked away! I know it would not run with the Mustang and the Camaro from a dead start, but at a kick down at 70?

The headlight covers were there because the federal government was not yet allowing flush halogens, which is what Dodge wanted to put on there originally. The feds also did not allow permanent clear headlamp covers yet either, so they had to retract. Same is true with the St. Regis. What a beautiful car. A time capsule indeed.

My first was a 78 that exact model except the interior was gray not red. '78 was the only year you could get the Magnum with a big block and mine had a 400 in it. Changing the spark plugs was a pain because they were pointed down under the exhaust manifold. I got T-boned by a Dodge Caravan going 65 and it was totaled but i walked away from it not sure you could say the same for cars today.

I had a 78 LeBaron medallion. The girl I got it from, put a hole in the side of the 318 the size of a coffee cup.I didn't think you could blow up a 318. I took a 1970 Duster 340 727a automatic 373 posi track rear end and I turned the LeBaron into a real car instead of a smog monster. It was hard to do the exhaust because of the torsion bars on the M body. No one made headers, I had an exhaust shop make dual exhaust.

There is something odd about that dash though; it's missing the tach. The XE, GT and 300 had a tach where the fuel/temp gauge is. I had a '79 Cordoba Brougham and I took the dash out of a 78 XE because it had the built-in tach. Now to correct a few things: First are the "side window braces"? Those are called window louvers and the XE and GT were a 2 bar and the Fury and Chargers were 4 bar. The Cordoba's were without the louvered inserts. The 1/2 vinyl tops were called Landau Tops, on the '79 Cordoba Brougham ONLY they were really padded and had a 2" wide piece stainless steel trim from side to side along the leading edge. The recesses on the rear sides are an "Alcove", The box on the side of the air cleaner: which the decal is missing; is the Lean Burn Control Module that came on the 3bbl 318 & 360 ci V8's. The 4bbl 360's and 400 ci didn't have it And that year (1978) was the very last year for the Big Block Mopar engines in any passenger car. The sticker is showing the vacuum lines routing for the emissions system. There were no hood springs because they looked terrible but instead they designed the Torsion Bar mechanism as seen here and it was a really smooth piece of work. Those headlight covers were a nice touch for that car. It was very common to see those either tinted a dark black or painted to match the body.

I owned the same car back in 1981 and the first thing that broke were the headlight covers. I had to stop when it got dark and open the hood and turn a knob behind the grill to make them come down. besides that It was a great car. The grey color was not the best, seems like everyone did not see you. Kind of blended in with the road. Mine had the digital radio

The Magnum was basically just a few cosmetic changes on a Cordoba. The front and rear facias were the main differences. Almost everything else, including mechanicals, was the same between the two models. There was a 1975 - 1978 Charger version on the same Cordoba (Chrysler B-Body) platform.

My heart breaks for Chrysler. There was a time when their products were the most badass on the road and their personal luxury cars were spot on! Fiat effing turned Chrysler into a ...joke.... It's supposed to have the K code 360 2 bbl engine, with Lean Burn. BUT judging from the newer p/n on the control unit, which is mounted on the air cleaner, it has the updated digital electronics inside, which makes this a much more reliable car! As smooth as it runs, I'd say it's working properly, because most of the time, if the ELB was not working right, the idle would be crap. Most of these also had the A904 lock up converter transmissions and an 8 1/4 rear end with 2.45 to 1 ratios. 318 2 bbls were G codes by the VIN. This is a primo example and I've never seen 1 better personally.

You could special order the 400 4bbl , from what my uncle told me, he had to get dealer aporoval and then 4 more signatures before Chrysler would build it for you.In 79 my uncle ordered( special) GTVversion 400 4bbl with " competition drivetrain and differential.Power windows doorlocks, T tops, magnum GT trim package and both front seat 6 way power. I mean RVERYTHING. Now he told me that 400 with competition drive- train made 235 horse power .Now in 79 THATS RARE. His os black over silver with red pi n striping just gorgeous car.I know this for he still has it with only 49k on it.Told me was his girlfriend car

The Dodge Magnum was GREAT LOOKING! It's too bad the "blues" of the late 70s-early '80s (floating, bad handling, either over-boosted power or bad manual brakes) on ALL brands, ruined what really was the ONLY real SUCCESSOR to the '71-'72 Dodge Charger!
