best time to be a sports fan too. This was one of the most exciting WS ever, then just a few months later we had the Cowboys Steelers Super Bowl.

I agree that it was a wonderful time to be young. I was only 9 that year but remember following each game of that series. Golden memories they will always be.

Indeed. When Thurman was killed the following year it took the heart out of the Yankees. They never really recovered.

The Dodgers played well......The Yanks.......just had a certain something....Dent,Doyle, Beattie....average players who played way over their heads... Nettles made un-human plays........I like Lasorda....glad he won in 1981 even though I like the Yanks........How Jackson got away with the Sacrifice Hip..............

yep, goose broke his thumb and things were bad even before thurman was killed i was at the game after he died and it was so sad, people were in tears, once the captain passed so did the season.

Figurora and Hunter forgot how to pitch. Gossage getting hurt...nailed the coffin. Jackson got hurt...Munson's accident . Then they traded Rivers. But still won 89 games which is amazing after all that. 7th best record in baseball.........

Nettles was my baseball Idol,I played 3rd base ,wore #9,and tried to play just like him!!!LOL. This W.S. was my fav. of all.The 1978 Yankees are my favorite Yankee team to this Day.

Clearly Reggie interfered. That one play most likely changed the face of the series.

The interference was obvious, but of course, that should never have happened because Joe Brinkman, the second base umpire, should have ruled the play dead when Bill Russell intentionally dropped the ball on that soft line drive that Lou Piniella hit. Had Brinkman made the correct call there, then Piniella would have been called out and both Thurman Munson and Reggie Jackson would have returned to the bases they occupied, and there would have been 2 outs with the score 3-1. Then after Brinkman blew the call on Russell's intentional drop, Russell made the next miscue on that play by not tagging Munson and stepping on second, which would have resulted in an inning-ending DP. Then unbelievably, they came within a hair of resuming the game after the argument without the correct number of outs, because the still had just one out posted, when there were two. First base umpire Frank Pulli finally straightened that out, then action was restarted.

Reggie's was a "Head Smart Play" by a World Champion Veteran - Could not happen to a better Manager Lasorda is the MOST overrated baseball guy of all time!

An old infielder's trick by Russell that backfired...had he made a better throw, perhaps a lob over Reggie to Garvey would've ended the inning.

The Dodgers went into New York up 2-0 in the Series, and quite possibly could have gone up 3-0 the night before had it not been for The Grand Larceny of Graig Nettles’ Glove. Going to the Bottom of the 6th, the Dodgers was up 3-1 in the game. The Yankees had Munson on Second and Jackson on First with One Out when Pinella hit a Line Drive dropped by Russell, he stepped on Second to force Jackson and then threw the ball to Garvey which was inferred by Jackson still sitting at First.

To me Nettles is the Yankees all time greatest 3rd baseman. Made the diving stab routine won more games with his glove than ARod ever did with his bat.

Nettles' mitt was a huge factor this series, no question about that! Dent, though, batted .417 with 10 hits and 7 RBI while Nettles hit .160 with one RBI.

@@bowlersinger If you watched the series I’m sure you would agree if the Yanks didn’t win game 3 they would have lost the series If you read or heard Dodger quotes after the series they always said game 3 was the turning point Nettles saved 7 runs with his glove that game Love Dent he was a rock at short made all the plays and had a great WS but If not for Nettles that banner would be in LA Almost 45 years what do most people remember about that series ? Dent or Nettles ?
