I remember this game like it was yesterday. It took place during the 2nd semester of my freshman year at college. I came back to my apartment after my classes and flipped on the TV to see one of the wildest games in team history. My first Phillies game at Connie Mack was a crazy 19-17 slug-fest loss to the Reds in '69. My lasting memory of that game was seeing the polarized reaction from the fans when Dick Allen came to the plate for the first time...a LOUD mixture of boos and cheers and then he brought the crowd to it's feet when he laced a frozen rope off the top of the Ballantine scoreboard in right-center. RIP, Dick.

If you're ever at Wrigley, stand in front of that house and look back down Kenmore Ave toward the main grandstand. As usual, great call by Kalas. Probably the most excited Lou Boudreau ever got on WGN-TV. This game is still talked about even 43 years later, typical of Cub woes of the time.

18 mph wind heading out toward right to start the game. The first inning the ball pops everywhere, so the Managers send the outfielders back to the warning track. So what happens? All those infield popups get blown into the outfield and drop and roll for doubles and triples. Whitey (variously in the 5th) - If you put Kingman's home runs back to back, you might hit Milwaukee (they got a double hey hey from Brickhouse)...Everyone in the bullpen is hiding...We might actually see a grown man cry in the middle of this diamond today...that's seven runs and...I don't know how many hits. I have no idea what my scoresheet says anymore. The 5th inning spilled into the 6th. I can see why they loved Ashburn

Yes, that game put them into a funk. The Phillies lost most of the pitching staff to injuries that year. At the All-Star break the Phillies were 3 1/2 back, but after losing 7 of 8 to the Pirates in August, they were done. Danny Ozark was fired after a particularly bad August homestand and replaced by Dallas Green.

That's baseball for you - sometimes you have some real good seasons but get one awfully bad season. But this was just a bump in the road for the Phillies as they would win the World Series the next year.

That's not true. The Phillies broadcast the game on Channel 17 on this date. The reason Musser starts the call of the game on this broadcast is because Kalas did the play by play on TV for the early innings. No surviving video exists of the Philadelphia telecast that I'm aware of and the WGN tape probably only exists because of the historical nature of the game. Jack Brickhouse was great during the game. If you watch the video you can hear a bunch of kids yelling "Let's go Cubs" in the background at times. Other things that are interesting of note, because the game was played at 2:00 pm East Coast time and most people were at work, Channel 17 rebroadcast the game the same evening so people could see it. Kalas at the beginning of the broadcast talks about "Photo Night" on the coming Saturday night against the Expos. This was the same night that the Phillies wore solid maroon uniforms for the first and only time. I was there that night and have pictures of most of the Phillies wearing them. On a sad note, all three of the men who broadcast this game almost 40 years ago is gone. I miss Harry the K, Whitey, and the underrated Andy Musser.
