1979 Daily Express Spring Classic - Wimbledon

For 9 years, 1973 to 1981, this event was one of THE biggest attractions on the UK calendar and on the World stage. Sponsored by The Daily Express newspaper, readers voted for the field and those who were able, lined up at Wimbledon. Not every rider could but the 16 were always first class and created a great nights racing.

Hi martyn. Thanks yet again !!! Think the spring classic was the first big open meeting I remember. Unbelievable vernier beating ole Olsen !!!!! Remember the Exeter team was nearly all continental riders. Some found hackney a task !! It was amazing you see how they scored at Exeter !! Thank you martyn

PC and Scott Autrey always good value around Wimbledon. Scott was also track record holder for a couple of seasons

my dad is Gordon and this was 2 years before i was born so i'm over the moon to find this on youtube! gutted dad missed the gate in both races i saw though haha. subscribed and look forward to seeing what other gems you have. Cheers Nickolaj

@@martynhepworthArchiveSpeedway its great that you've got them on the www now so that they will never be lost. we had a few videos from back in the day but not sure where they have ended up! its a shame because the clips hold so many memories. Out of interest how are you converting the videos? I have some family ones i've always wanted to digitalise myself
