The ceremonial handover in the desert is the result of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty, which was signed in Washington on March 26, 1979 and ended the state of war between Egypt and Israel that had prevailed since 1948. Since then, it has formed an important basis for relations between the two countries. The peace treaty committed both countries to recognize each other as a state.
With the peace treaty, Israel promised to withdraw its troops from the Sinai Peninsula, which it had occupied in 1973. In addition, both countries assured each other of the inviolability of their national borders. Both Egypt and Israel pledged "to ensure that acts or threats of aggression, hostility or violence" would not come from state or non-state actors. Possible acts of aggression are to be prosecuted and punished by the judiciary of the respective countries.
Geostrategically, the peace treaty led to a changed situation for Israel: Israeli ships were granted access to the Suez Canal. The Gulf of Aqaba and the Strait of Tiran were recognized as international waterways.
The Sinai Peninsula was returned to Egypt in multiple stages beginning in 1979 as part of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty. Israel dismantled 18 settlements, 2 airforce bases, a naval base, and other installations by 1982, including most oil resources under Israeli control.
