1979 Mercury Cougar Discovered 20-Years Underwater! (POLICE Tell Us to Put It Back!)

We Discovered a 1979's Mercury Cougar Underwater In Carter's Lake Georgia and removed it with our Tow Truck. We later discovered that the vehicle was placed intentionally in the lake 20 years ago and used for dive training and we were asked to put it back in the lake. There were no signs or buoys indicating it was a training aid and it still contained lots of pollutants such as plastics, foam seats and other parts still containing oils so we did not feel comfortable putting it back. I think contacting the authorities before you pulled it out would have saved you alot of time and headaches. At least you would have known it was to stay in the water. I agree though, it should have been COMPLETELY stripped of all toxins before being put in there.

What would the EPA say about putting the car back in its current condition? What was OK 20 years ago wouldn't necessarily be considered good today. You are right about the plastics. They have become a tremendous problem in our waters today as they degrade and release chemicals. Also, they removed the fuel tank and brake master cylinder, but did they remove the associated fuel and brake lines? Were the wheel brake cylinders removed? Did they decrease the engine compartment and the underbody? There was a visible oil sheen on the water when the car was floated, so the vehicle was not decontaminated prior to sinking.

Superhero kinda story and it's pretty awesome came out with a season 2 recently but to sum it up, a politician, police chief, underground crime boss and rich person I assume millionaire committed crimes and conspiracies to get the politician, power and wealth for themselves and cover up the crimes committed using blackmail and intricate planning. So this is fishy for me.

"Put it back." So, the police recommended you to break the law? Putting that car back causes more hard than taking it out. Infact, taking that car out of the water stop any sealed compartments filled with things like oil, gas and other things harmful for fish and wildlife in these waters. It's craaazy.

I grew up on that lake and I still live close by. My 2 aunts and their husbands were on a new boat in the cove you are diving. A speed boat ran over them and ruined the boat and thankfully they were not harmed.

A simple sign would let people know that it is a training vehicle. But you guys did the right thing by removing it. A car doesn't belong in the lake.

If you look back on the video you can see the sheen of oil coming from the car as you started to lift it. You can't tell me that all of the fluids were drained and cleaned out of that car before it was sunk. Good job guys and don't let him bully you around!

Just cause they remove the engine gas tank and trans doesn't mean they got rid of all oil I bet most people would never even think about the diff and grease in all the wheel bearing

You guys did what was RIGHT! A simple sign facing the water telling boaters about the training car under the water. They were probably afraid the vehicle would not have to be certified again (it shouldn't pass today's standards).

You both done the right thing. The sheriff went by what he was told. That the car was hazard proof. He said the government said it was okay to put in the water. When have you ever known our government to know what they are doing or make and sense about anything. I would bet that the EPA nor OSHA would be happy about that car in the water. Twenty years ago they didn't have all the regulations they have now. That's why our waterways are a mess. The ranger however was a little more knowledgeable. That little twist about there being no dive team anymore sure did make a fool out of the sheriff. Nice job guys. Keep up the good work. God bless and be safe. Love ya both.

Having the car there polluting the water so that it’s there ‘just in case’ they ever have a dive team again is a very weak excuse to have it remain there polluting the environment. The cop is pissed because he feels his domain has been encroached upon. Drop the ego, the attitude, and do what is right for the sake of environmental health. Besides, the removal now requires another environmental assessment and I doubt the car would meet the more stringent regulations developed since it was put into the lake 18 yrs prior. How would this cop like several environmental organizations plus the Federal Environment people on his ass ? His tune would sure change in a hurry !

Screw them. We don’t put vehicles in our rivers and lakes to train on. We train on vehicles that were already there. We do have objects made of PVC piping and chicken wire we made we sink and retrieve afterwards for our trainings.

I'm shocked...that the police didn't block off BOTH launch ramps...just because they can. I found a Jeep Wrangler off the "boat launch" at a local lake. The officer that responded told me all about everything, because he knew it all. I could read the rear license plate and first thing I saw was the alloy spare tire on the tailgate. He said I saw the headlights. No. Nose down, rear floating, probably due to empty gas tank.

Would it not be a good idea for the police to spray a X on each part of their training diving vehicle’s so that the divers that do an amazing job, some that even the enforcement officers haven’t found so they can be identifiable as such, And taking off any pollution parts,also by putting up a sign saying Police training or the likes? Yep, this is for TRAINING all the Scuba divers! As for the FISH that might have been in the water, they are ALL DEAD! One day, one of these Divers will come across Fish Swimming around, and the Diver will Freak out and get out of the water because they never seen Fishy’s before up close and Personal? Thanks goodness, you guys are Professional and have seen Fishy’s in and around cars under Water!

@@79tazman Don’t Quote me on this but the Oil pan and the Transmission are bad for the environment. Also the Anti Freeze doesn’t do well with fish. But on the Bright side, it will kill the Mosquitoes!

Wow you are slow. How do you know stuff was not removed before they put it in? Oh wait we do know… since it didn’t even have an engine. It’s 20 years after the fact. Leaving it in there will not hurt anything, nor will putting it back. Maybe you don’t know this, but ships are sunk on purpose, or by an accident, and left to create a HABITAT FOR THE FISH. It actually helps the fish to have the car there, it doesn’t hurt them.

As they no longer have a dive team, could they confirm it was still in use by any other teams? If not, no point in putting it back without at least getting rid of all pollutant materials. A 4 door Cougar is very rare. Only the 77/79 and 80/82 generations had one. Saw only one of the latter, in Mastic, NY.

So, imo, the cop on the phone started with an attitude, and i understand why you got your back up. They should have identified it in some way as a training aid. I understand the concern about the tires and plastic pollutants. On the other hand, once you guys were suspicious that it might have been a training aid, the only suggestion i would have is that you might have called just to check before u pulled. If u did, i missed that part. Otherwise, you handled it appropriately, and it was ridiculous for the cop on the phone to tell u to put it back. Mistake or not, once it was out, you were right to stick to your guns on not being part of placing pollutants BACK into the lake. That's just dumb. They messed up by not marking it, and rules have changed EPA wise in the last 20yrs, so it needs to be reinspected and approved. We could see the dang oil when u lifted it, so its not harmless! TLDR- You guys didnt do anything wrong. You handled the phone calls (in the other video) appropriately. Keep it up. You guys make a difference, and we love you for it!❤ OMG, i totally missed the part of no longer having a diving team. That makes the sheriff on the phone even more of an asshole!

The area wasnt marked with signs or fences because they didnt want the public to know they were polluting their source of drinking/bathing water and supply of fresh water fish. They knew they were polluting the lake.

If you use a little common sense the car with no engine was the first clue for me why would someone take the trouble of putting a car with no engine in the lake? all the cars that are stolen have engine in them thieves are not going to steal a car pull the engine and then push it into a lake

100% you did the right thing. I would have asked for records of the last time anyone actually used it as a training aid. It shouldn’t have been left there for 20 years without stripping it clean. Even the rusting metal is a hazard after all those years. The rust leeches into the fish and people drinking the water. There should be a limit as to how long a car can remain under water as a training tool (ie: 6-12 months) and then it must be replaced with another training vehicle if it’s still needed. This way it’s not in that water more than absolutely necessary. A training aid should not be submerged for twenty years even if it is being used. But like I said, I’d love to see proof of the last time any dive teams used it cause it sounds like there isn’t even a local dive team anymore - and a state team isn’t likely to go outside of the cities where there’s probably already an abundance of sunken vehicles to use. Also, in this day and age, you can probably 3D print something temporary out of PVC in the shape of a vehicle that can easily be used to train with and then removed that very same day. Wow that state trooper expected you to go back and sink it again?! That’s hilarious! 🤣🤣🤣

This has got to be one of the coolest jobs, I love the fact that you guys are getting pollutants out of our rivers and lakes, bc I can hardly catch anything over 4lbs these days, and that's annoying when just 20 years ago, the fish were twice the weight, and healthier. I know they do sanitize vehicles, and structure in some places to promote habitat for fish, and eco growth, but I don't think I've ever seen anything with tires on it, since that's a petroleum. Sucks you guys had all the good intention, but ended up doing the work for not. Lesson learned, I suppose?! ^^

I do agree with you as things have changed from then to now and pat you guys for clearing up the river and you would put it back if the hazards were removed. Nope put it back. Tires are not a pollutant. In fact tires are often chained together and anchored in lakes for structure in fisheries. You just can't go pulling up large things like that expecting someone else to take care of that. This all coming from a police diver with a degree in hazardous chemical procurement and disposal degree. Notify authorities of vehicle before attempting to removing it

It had the rear axle in it still even if they have drained the rear differential there would still be oil in the axle tubes polluting the waters that's why there was an oil film on top of the water whenever they pulled the car from the lake it was definitely polluting the lake I'm a mechanic I should know

They use to call authorities..then they got booted out the way on a haul ..after that they said they were gonna pull and ask later….id respect them more if they went through proper channels..and replaced that one when asked

Tires and plastic trim go nearly forever in fresh water, I don't see the eco-hazard here. It was a training car for divers and rescue personnel, it's fine where it was. The only thing that would have been better is if they replaced it with a newer car that was more representative of what is currently on the road for more up to date training.

I think nug was clutching at straws with this one. it's a training vehicle with the fluids removed. when new divers go down on a real car wreck that won't of had the glass and trim removed so why would the training vehicle be like that. not spreading any hate but it should of been left there and the time and resources put into removing a car that was dumped complete

The police department already said they haven’t had any teams out there in forever. And you’re completely right. It should be marked if it’s a training area. The fire department has their training towers blocked off why wouldn’t a scuba team have their dive area blocked off

Ha Adam I'm old enough to see these everywhere on the street. When cars were cars with great motors, carburetor, no catalytic convertor,,didn't sound like a sewing machine like Ferrari,Lamborghini do now. Muscle cars to these and buicks. And made of solid steel with steel bumpers not plastic. We could roll them and not get a scratch and minimal damage.

I think such training aids should be marked above and below water. I also would recommend removing all glass as a safety. Yes, thin rusty metal will cut you but it will eventually decompose, sharp jagged glass will not.

Okay!.. I've been watching your videos for a very long time.... At some point, this was gonna happen!.. The cop wasn't the most professional on the phone..But Jeremy, you could've handled the situation better... I'm going to say it's a 60/40... On bad communication. Lessons learned, if you find a car again with no engine and transmission .... Tag it ... Get in touch with the local dive team, not the police!... And then move forward.... You guys do an amazing job and there are plenty unsolved cases!.. Keep doing what you're doing and stay safe out there!

Im in ar and ya if a boat sinks or certain vehicles sinks in our rivers, game and fish can fine people for recovering stuff, bc the vessels become future habitats for wildlife and pulling up can do more and stir pollutants up more than just leaving it. Ive asked about recovering couple boats thro the yrs and thats what they told me. Washed up on the bank is one thing, but sunken and underwater was different they told me.

This guy kind of reminds me of the police officer at the scene of one of the dives that found the kid in the water just feet from the shore. The police officer’s response was it was going to ruin his weekend. This guy here sounds like that guy.

On those Ford’s the vin# was riveted to the upper dash pad , which I see is missing , and not on the firewall ( like your trying to find by smashing the windshield .... but yes you had the right area

When in Georgia lakes and ponds expect the unexpected. Alot of junk in lakes below Atlanta. Was always told trash washes down stream from there. Look in Jackson lake( Butts county) area

Factually, you should contact local law enforcement after locating any vehicle. only they, not you, may know if the vehicle is part of any unsolved investigation.
